John Harding Nixon (Jack) was born in Orbost on July 16, 1905. The blue gums originally planted in Sturt St in the 1860s were grown from seed gifted by Baron von Mueller. About 20 years later shopkeepers complained that the trees shaded their shops too well, and made the street damp. The bluegums were then replaced with exotics.Previously unknown image of Ballarat. Inspected by Joanna Freslov, archaeologist 2.6.22008. Grinding stones are slabs of stone that Aboriginal people used to grind and crush different materials. Bulbs, berries, seeds, insects and many other things were ground between a large lower stone and a smaller upper stone. This is the lower stone.Large grinding stones such as this one were designed to be left at a camp site for use the next time the group moved there. Smaller grinding stones were carried between sites. Grinding stones were not abandoned when they became worn and smooth through use. The stone would simply be roughened again so it was once again suitable for its function. This is an example of a food preparation utensil used by the Early Indigenous people of Eastern Australia.A large flat rock with grind hole in top. This unused bag would have been used by Snowy River Co-Op Ltd to pack sweet corn in the late 1960's -1980's Snowy River Seeds started life as a farmers' co-operative (Snowy River Co-op) in 1967 specialising in horticulture. Point to Sky is one of Akio Makigawa’s final works, the commission was completed posthumously. It is the only public artwork by the celebrated Australian-Japanese sculptor of this scale located in regional Victoria. You will see two stainless steel forms, a smaller more rectangle form and the towering geometric form, with seed pod shapes at the peak. These forms represent the house, the artist is expressing that home is a shelter and also a place for gathering. The house form grows into a tower to symbolise the achievements of mankind and the action taken to protect the rights of the community during the Eureka Stockade. The top seed pod is gold, referencing Ballarat as the centre of the gold rush in Victoria, as well as representing the sun as the source of life. The paving of the forecourt was designed in bluestone, typical of the work of Makigawa. Stainless steel panelling and shaping on armature. Legacy has a programme of donating trees grown from seeds descended from a pinecone of a Lone Pine in Gallipoli. One photo shows President John Stevenson by the newly planted tree, and making a speech, also Legatee Lucky Luscombe speaking. The plaque shown is now known to be incorrect. The species of tree is not an Aleppo Pine but a Pinus Brutia (also known as Turkish Pine). From the early 1970s Legacy had a commemorative programme of providing trees grown from seeds from Gallipoli to various towns throughout Australia. This may be part of that project (see the Lone Pine brochure at 00593) or subsequent propagation undertaken by Legacy. Melbourne Legacy‚ Commemoration Committee was responsible for the collection, propagation, presentation and dedication of Lone Pines from the 24th Battalion tree at the Shrine of Remembrance. On the 14th September 1989 further seedlings were collected with the hope to raise 1,000 trees from the seeds. Thus, Legacy is helping to keep the memory of the Gallipoli 'Lone Pine' alive, its spirit living on today. The Port Phillip Farmers Society was instituted in 1848. It was reported by the Ballarat Agricultural Society in 1859 that flax was grown in the Ballarat district. Flax was sown at Brown Hill on 04 October 1858, the seed saved, and the flax beetled on 28 February 1859. The exhibitor was T. MCKenna who was the first flax produced in the colony. An article discussing the outcome of a project to list, photograph and identify indigenous plants growing on public land in the City of Nunawading. The project has discovered 28 new species. It was owned by Evelyn Paten ( nee Roberston) who was married to Thomas Paten who came to Orbost in 1893 and in 1907 began growing fancy bean seeds for H. James. MacKinnon and Sons were seed and produce merchants. Mackinnon was the Orbost agent for the Vacuum Oil Co., and his business extended to Cann River, 60 miles away. This item was probably used by Robert Pullar Cameron who was a Shire Councillor for many years. He married Penuel Hossack and had a family of James, Flora, Penuel and Alex. This item is an example of book-keeping for an Orbost business in the early 20th century. Castor oil is a vegetable oil obtained by pressing the seeds of the castor oil plant (Ricinus communis). The common name "castor oil", from which the plant gets its name, probably comes from its use as a replacement for castoreum, a perfume base. Castor oil was a common remedy for various ailments in the early 20th century.These bottles reflect the developments in health care during the first half of the 20th century. Photos of President Chas Wilks collecting pine cones from the Lone Pine descendant at the Shrine of Remembrance, the 24th Battalion tree. The cones dropped to the ground and school children are seen collecting them. Legacy has run a programme since the 1970s of propagating saplings taken from seeds of pine descended from a pine tree from Gallipoli and giving them to various clubs, schools and town councils. The photo appeared in the President's Highlights report in 1989. The caption says '1,000 seedlings from the historic Lone Pine tree near the Shrine of Remembrance will be propagated on behalf of Melbourne Legacy by the Department of Conservation Forests and Lands. Melbourne President Legatee Chas Wilks, along with the Minister for CFL, Ms Kay Setches and pupils from South Yarra Primary School helped to collect the seeds. The trees, once grown will be distributed to schools by Melbourne Legacy. Also see item at 01334 in 1993 when President Woodward was giving out saplings, it was three years later was when the saplings grown from these seeds were distributed. These house plans were drawn up for James Nixon. James Nixon was born in Orbost on 15.11.1912. He married Joyce May Thompson on 2.2.1937. He was a well known Orbost identity, serving a record 47 years as a Commissioner on the Snowy River improvement Trust, as well a director of Snowy River Seed and th Bean Board. He died on 21.12.2002.James Nixon, a third generation Nixon, father of Peter Nixon A.O., was an involved and respected Orbost identity. Historical: Tobacco farming began circa 1960 in the Kiewa Valley and consequently became one of its major industries. Many of the Italian families were involved in tobacco farming. Historical: This equipment was used on one of the first tobacco farms in the Kiewa Valley at Glenns Creek, Mongans Bridge. The can was home-made showing the resourcefulness of farmers living in the Kiewa Valley. Provenance: This tobacco farmer came from Italy and was sponsored to visit a tobacco farmer in Mytleford to learn how to grow tobacco so that he could transfer those skills to his own farm in the Kiewa Valley. Used for pouring Benzol into special long flat troughs in seed beds. Rusty tin rectangular can with handle on 1 side, opposite side has a spout coming from the bottom of the can reaching out higher than the can and held in place by a flat piece of tin jutting out from the can.
