Functional Object - Cap Badge, Stokes & Sons Melbourne, "17 Conductor", 1905?
Cap or arm Badge for the Electric Supply Co. of Victoria (ESCo) "Conductor" with conductor staff number "17" Made from a manufactured and steel plate, nickel plated to indicate the staff number position held by the wearer as part of their uniform. Letters and number stamped, with horizontal lines. At each side of the badge are vertical holes through which light leather straps have been fixed with button holes to enable securing the badge on an arm. Leather straps black on one side and tan on the other. On the rear, silver soldered on are two loops at each end of the badge to enable badge to be sewn or fitted with clips onto the cap or the uniform. Badge appears in some photos of ESCo staff in the 1900's. On the back of the back of the badge in letters is the name of the manufacturer - "Stokes & Sons". 35mm slide, square format mounted in a "Kodak " cardboard slide mount with Kodak logos and printing of No. 21 decorated as the Myer Christmas tram for 1968 offloading a large number of Children outside Myers Store, Sturt St. Has Town Hall in background. Note that this offloading was on the "wrong side", driver standing in front of traffic and another person standing by the door supervising. Tram has been decorated as a "show boat" with a paddle wheel, waves and the side windows covered to resemble port holes. Destination box has been covered with the words "To Myers". Tram has a roof advertisement "Myers for Everything under the tree". Theme: Santa's Showboat. Features a cross bench tramcar, 19 or 20, passing the front of the store with its blinds drawn, and many flags, advertisements and banners, including the Australian flag. The caption to the photograph is "C.T.E. corner, Bridge Street, Tram Terminus", Ballarat's Busiest Drapers. Shows the buildings along the south side of Sturt St. On the side of the tramcar are the roof advertisement for Havelock Tobacco and on the stair, advertisement for Bonanza's store. Negative Nos. N393 and N394 and black and white print made by a laser printer (stored in folder) of Bendigo tram No. 6 at Golden Square terminus. Tram has the destination of Golden Square. Has the Golden Square hotel in the background and an Age advertisement on the dash panel. Note the large overhead pan at the terminus. .1 - tram has arrived and the driver/conductor has place the pole on the overhead after turning the pole. .2 - Driver/conductor standing by front of tram. Date of photo on folder - 26/9/1962?? or 1 Jan 1963. A date on the front of the folder of 1/12/1959 is too early - tram has been painted with tiger stripes and fitted with dash canopy lighting. Same date on Ballarat folders as well - see negative number N392 etc. Crew member wearing a great coat - unusual for Bendigo on a new years day. Photo early 1960's. Has a strong association with the horse tram era and demonstrates methods of display.Printed original Ballaarat Tramway Co. horse tram by laws placed on a cut sheet of glass, for use in the trams themselves. Printed onto heavy paper/card. Facsimile (Reg Item 773) made from the item recovered from Horse Tram No. 1 in 1986. Gives details of the Acts under which the by-law was made. By Law made by the City of Ballaarat, dated 6th April 1889. Gazetted 5 April 1889. Signed by the Mayor, J. G. McDonald, two Councillors William Little and David Cooke, and Town Clerk Geo. Perry. Looks west along Sturt St. One of a series of dishes made for R. In this night exposure the famous window displays can be clearly seen. Also at the extreme right of the photograph the verandah over 'the bridge' can be seen - the creek is covered over making an arcade. Also the verandah posts which were all removed in the 1960s and cantilevered verandahs installed throughout Ballarat. Mrs Bon Strange and her husband Bert were well known Ballarat residents.
