This two story building was once The Victoria Bank, in Main Street Stawell later other businesses. Photo taken in 1991. The building now restored, and the home of Ron & Trudy Smith, who conduct a book exchange.Two black and white photographs of a two story brick building once The Victoria Bank and later a Book exchange. Doorways and windows on the ground floor have similar arch designs. The three top windows are rectangular in shape with a parapet on top of the building. This image is one of a series of photographs taken by Melbourne based photographers Stevenson and McNicoll who visited Bacchus Marsh and its nearby districts between September and November 1883. George Taylor was in business in Bacchus Marsh from 1866. He built these premises in Main Street in 1868 and remained in business until 1888 when Samuel Painter brought the property and operated his own saddlery business. The location was later used for the State Savings Bank of Victoria and the Bank of New South Wales (Westpac). The location of this site in 2024 is 136 Main Street, Bacchus Marsh.Small sepia 'carte de viste' style unframed photograph on card with gold border framing photograph. Housed in the album, 'Photographs of Bacchus Marsh and District in 1883 by Stevenson and McNicoll'. The image shows a single storey timber building with a pitched roof. The front of the gable has an ornamental wooden fretwork design attached.The name 'Taylor' can be clearly seen above the front door. There is one large window. The roof appears to be slate and the building has one chimney. Outhouses can be seen to the left and right of the building. Typed notes mentioning the earning of pocket money, The Great Gold Transaction which tells of two boys, aged 7 and 8 going to the Bank of Victoria in View Street and selling their gold, the visit by American sailors to Bendigo, A Matter of Morals and Ethics which tells of two boys who were given 3d by some ladies preparing for a tea-meeting to buy some milk. After a mishap crossing a gully they lost the 3d, so they went to a herd of goats and milked some to fill their pail. The boy’s mother was horrified. Entered service Saturday 13 November 1937. In April 1984 converted to SW5. Currently stored at Newport Workshops. The receipts and expenditure of the EagleHawk RSL Sub Branch cover the years 1960 - 2005. On the final entry a note in red pen dated 28.2.2005 that this was the close of business and the amalgamation of the Eaglehawk RSL Sub Branch with The Bendigo RSL, a final date under is 7.03.2005.Receipt expenditure book, spine and corners are brown leather suede, front & rear face is green buckram, a label on the spine Has "CASH BOOK", ruled lines in blue /red, vertical lines in red. The entries are in blue pen and some minor points in red. On the first page is a typed letter pasted in re a 5 Pound School Scholarship from the Eagle Hawk RSL per year. At the rear is a hand written note with a list of 12 names being the "Foundation Members". It is believed that the C. Lim Kee who was paying these rates was Charles Lim Kee. According to the Rutherglen Sun September 11, 1896 he was starting a business known as the Cash Bakery in premises previously occupied by Conrad Huhs. In 1903 he moved to new premises next to the Bank of Victoria. By 1908 he had a shop and rooms in Main Street, and houses in Wallace Street and Murray Street. Part of a collection of business documents found under the floor of a building in Main Street when it was being renovated. At that time the owner was Don Chambers, and the premises was occupied as the Chambers Riteway Supermarket. The location (134 Main Street) is currently (2022) occupied by Miegel’s Pharmacy Rutherglen. Receipt from Rutherglen Waterworks Trust for water rates for a house in Murray Street. The form is printed on paper with hand written details reproduced with carbon paper.,"Rutherglen Waterworks Trust, No. of service 278. [receipt no.]: 605. Rutherglen, August 14th 1914. Received from Mr C. Lim Kee the sum of --- Pounds twelve Shillings and --- Pence, being Water Rate on a House or Land situate in house, Murray Street Rutherglen Urban Waterworks District. Pierce Butler (1865-1927) was born in Kilmore and moved to Bendigo aged 12. He initiall worked with Mr Trumble, chemist before he became assistant to Mr A Collins in his new practice in View Street opposite the Bank of Victoria. At this time he was primarily a dentist. He then became the dentist operating out of London's pharmacy, 24 Pall Mall. By 1910 he was advertising as a dispenser and dentist at London's pharmacy. By 1915 he was operating his own business as a chemist and dentist in Mitchell St where he continued until his death. In 1891 he married Elizabeth Anderson (1867-1937) and they lived in Macrae Street. Pierce Butler was also a Justice of the Peace. Small round cardboard Pill Box from P. Watercolour and black pen painting of the Bank of New South Wales, Eaglehawk. Written on bottom of art:' Note room with high chimney where gold was melted into ingots to be sent to Melbourne. This bank was closed about 1920 and has been used as a shop since' Artwork signed by Alf Perry 1954. Two punch holes on LH side. Written on back in pencil : Only 3 banks in Victoria had a smelting room with tall chimney. The gold was bought and refined and melted into ingots. The three banks were at Eaglehawk, Castlemaine and Bendigo (from publicity officer Bank of NSW Melbourne). I have established that the Castlemaine Bank NSW definitely did not have a chimney stack as in this picture. Empire Day celebrations were held from 1908-1912. Prior to the opening of the railway in 1893 the only public transport to Surrey Hills was the Melbourne-Lilydale horse coach which travelled to Surrey Hills down Victoria Street and Mont Albert Road. The fare to Union Road was 9 pence. Photo 16-4a was the number given to the original print provided by the State Savings Bank. Ken Hall made a negative from it, and the reprint of this was given the number 1459. This number was chosen as the catalogue number to avoid confusion with SHP4a. Photo provided by Surrey Hills branch of State Savings Bank of Victoria in 1978 for launch of Surrey Hills Neighbourhood Centre and was one of the first photos in the collection.
