Kew was gazetted as a Municipality in 1860, as a Borough in 1863, as a Town in 1910, and as a City in 1921. Under a conservative Victorian Government, led by premier Jeff Kennett, Councils across Victoria were amalgamated, including the City of Kew, which was joined with the Cities of Hawthorn and Camberwell to form a new City of Boroondara (1994- ). This is one of two photographs recording the last Kew Council and senior corporate staff in 1994. Jessie McCleverty had a private ladies school in 2 locations in Surrey Hills in the early 1900s. She is not registered in teacher records at PROV. According to Jocelyn Hall's notes her school was located at 12 Durham Road from 1903-1905/6 and from then until 1933 at 44 Windsor Crescent.The earliest date in Sands & MacDougall is c1902 and according to the Victorian Government Gazette 1924, the school closed in 1923. [1933 may be a typo.] She was born in Melbourne in 1862 daughter of George McCleverty and Mary Gill. She had a brother William Edward, b1858, Ballarat East. Her parents may have migrated independently from Ireland. They married in 1856. By 1931 she was retired but still living in Surrey Hills. It is unclear exactly when she moved to Queensland, but she is listed on the electoral roll there for 1943 living with her niece Frances Victoria Shepperd and she died on 26 Jul 1943. She is buried in Toowoomba Cemetery. Fanny Wridgway (1890-1956) was born in Box Hill, the daughter of Frederick Wridgway and his wife Mary Ann (nee Young). She had an older brother Alfred and a younger sister Mary Ann. Box Hill Reporter entry gives her attending Banff Ladies' College in Box Hill in 1904 and she was dux of the school in 1905. Although the original donor indicated that Fanny was a teacher, she is not registered on the PROV Victorian Teachers' Roll. Electoral roll entries consistently indicate that her occupation was 'clerk'. She is buried in Box Hill Cemetery, along with her sister Mary Ann. No information found regarding W M Nance.This a fine example of the standard of work required of a senior student for examination purposes in 1907/1908.An exercise book with alternating lined and plain paper. The cover is beige in colour with a stamped illustration in the top LH corner. The binding is navy coloured cloth tape. it has rounded corners. The pages are numbered in neat black pen in the upper outside corner. An index on the front page indicates the scope of entries and the page number. The book is almost full. Each completed page has been signed by W M Nance. Tallangatta Butter Factory The Tallangatta Butter Factory and Creamery Co. Ltd was established as a co-operative with application for shares closing on 19 December 1891. It was registered in February 1892 and notified in the Victorian Government Gazette. It was one of the first north eastern Victoria dairy co-operatives. The Upper Murray and Mitta Herald on Thursday 23 March 1905 recorded that advice had been received of the sale in London of a shipment of 191 boxes of sent via India. The sale fetched a price at 105 shillings per cwt (hundredweight). When the township of Tallangatta was moved due to the raising of the Hume Weir in 1956, a new factory was built at the new location. It continued to operate until 1959 when it merged with the Kiewa Butter Factory to become the North Eastern Dairy Company. In 1985 this organisation was taken over by the Murray Goulburn Co-operative Eskdale Butter Company. After the selling of shares to form a co-operative, The Eskdale Butter Factory was officially opened on Saturday 26 November 1904. Cheltenham station was built in 1898 and serviced a primarily rural, market gardening community.The late 1870s saw the beginning of a massive program to construct railway lines throughout Victoria. One of these lines was from Caulfield to Frankston. A survey undertaken by J P Madden, an engineer employed by the railways, established the route, although this was later modified. At the time of the official opening of the line to Mordialloc no station buildings had been constructed despite the fact that tenders had been called in the Government Gazette of 26 May 1881 and subsequently in the Argus newspaper on 30 August 1881 for what became stations at Glenhuntly, Ormond, Bentleigh, Moorabbin, Highett, Cheltenham, Mentone and Mordialloc. However platforms and sidings were completed, ready to receive passengers.
