This trophy was given in 1872 by Richard Lane to the Villiers & Heytesbury Agricultural Association for the best four horses in waggon. The Villiers & Heytesbury Association was founded in 1854 with the first show held at Warrnambool in 1855. It still operates today as the Warrnambool Agricultural Society. Richard Lane owned and operated the Commercial Hotel ( now the Whalers Hotel) in Warrnambool in the 1870s and 80s. In 1872 Richard Lane was the chief figure in staging the first Warrnambool Winter steeple chase meeting that included the now famous Grand Annual Steeple Chase. He was a generous donor of trophies to the Warrrnambool races and the Warrnambool show. It appears that no one was awarded the trophy in 1872.This trophy is of considerable importance as it is connected to the prominent 19th Century Warrnambool hotel keeper and racing identity Richard Lane and to the early history of the Villiers & Heytesbury AssociationThis is a silver cup on a silver stand mounted on a wooden base. The cup and the silver stand are much ornamented with the stand representing a tree with the branches attached to the stem and projecting out. Portions of the branches are broken off and are loose inside the cup. The cup has two trees embossed and a relief of a wagon with a driver and four horses. Huddart Parker traded between 1876 and 1961. It was established in 1876 by James Huddart, T.J. Parker, John Traill and Captain T. Webb. The business rapidly expanded and was travelling between Melbourne and Sydney by 1882 and Melbourne to Adelaide from 1886. The Company was established in Geelong but moved its offices to Melbourne by 1890. It is likely this saucer was used on the Huddart Parker shipping line some time between 1876 and 1961. Historically, the early establishment of the company in Geelong is significant for the region. This image is one of a series of photographs taken by Melbourne based photographers Stevenson and McNicoll who visited Bacchus Marsh and its nearby districts between September and November 1883. In 1850 a new Woolpack Inn was built for Mr. J.E. Crook, replacing the original slab building of 1845. Stables for twenty horses was also built in 1850, and in 1851, Crook established a coach service to the goldfields. After 1862, Crook pursued an interest in horse breeding, using the stables to accommodate his horses. The most notable of his horses was Saladin, which won the Australian Cup in 1872 after two dead heats with The Flying Dutchman. James Elijah Crook died in 1889.Small sepia 'carte de viste' style unframed photograph on card with gold border framing photograph. The photo shows a group of men and horses from The Woolpack Inn stables, seven horses and six riders, one horse being held on a short rein by a rider on a white horse. This trophy is one of several from the 1930s that were awarded as part of the Inter-Church Indoor Sports Association competitions in Warrnambool. One of the sponsors of this competition was Fletcher Jones, the well-known clothing manufacturer who had his head office and major factory in Warrnambool. This trophy was awarded to the aggregate winners of the competition and was won by the Congregational Men’s Institute (C.M.I.) A Congregational Church was opened in Warrnambool in Liebig Street in 1864 and transferred to Henna Street in 1940. This church in Henna Street was sold to the Salvation Army in 1979 when the Congregational Church merged with the Methodist Church to become the Uniting Church. This trophy is of interest as a memento of the now-defunct inter-church sports competitions held in Warrnambool in the 1930s. This is an electro-plate nickel silver cup with a thin stem and a silver base resting on a Bakelite stand. The cup has two side handles. ‘I.C.I.S.A. The tea service originally consisted of cups, saucers, plates, teapots, basins and milk jugs. John Walker arrived in Hobart Town in 1822. This trophy was awarded to the Congregational Men’s Institute (C.M.I.) in 1933 as part of the Inter-Church Indoor Sports Association competitions. The C. M. I. was an active men’s group connected to the Congregational Church in Warrnambool. A Congregational Church was established in Liebig Street in Warrnambool in 1864 and in 1940 it was transferred to Henna Street. The Henna Street church was sold to the Salvation Army in 1979 when the Congregational Church merged with the Methodist Church to form the Uniting Church. The donor of the trophy was Roy Swinton, a member of the Swinton family which has been prominent in the business world in Warrnambool since William Swinton established a store in Timor Street Warrnambool in 1865. He sold groceries, hardware, glassware and china. Today the Swinton family still operates a furniture and bedding store in Timor Street, making it one of the oldest family businesses in Australia. This trophy is of considerable interest as it is connected to the Swinton family, an important business family in Warrnambool for over 150 years, to the Congregational Church in Warrnambool in the 1930s and to the inter church sports association that was in Warrnambool in the 1930s. This is an electro plated nickel silver cup with two ornamental side handles and a circular lid with two ridged patterns and a small knob on the top.
