St James Old Cathedral
Cathedral Building, St James Old Cathedral, 09/11/1839
St James Church, "Church of the Pioneers", was the first Church, first Anglican Church, and is the oldest building in Melbourne. The foundation stone was laid in 1839 by the Superintendent of the District of Bourke, Charles La Trobe, later Governor of the Colony of Victoria. The Church was opened in 1842 and the first Bishop Charles Perry was installed in the Cathedral in 1848 when its status changed to that of Cathedral. Its status changed back to that of a Parish church after 1891 when St Paul's Cathedral in Swanston Street was opened. St James is known as the "Church of the Pioneers" as it served as the place of worship, marriage, baptism and burial of many of the first families in the District of Bourke and the Colony of Victoria. St James Old Cathedral is of the most important historic value to the community of Victoria and to the Australian nation as the first Anglican Church founded within 4 years of the settlement of Melbourne. It represents and conserves the very earliest history of white settlement in Victoria and preserves the church associated history of the Pioneer families of Victoria in its collection of original records and artefacts. Late Neo-Georgian style stone church building with bluestone footings. Octagonal upper one storey bell tower housing eight bells supported by two storey square towers. Body of church has sloping roof and 4 stained glass ornamental windows on each of west and east sides with decorative sanctuary window to the north. Decorative Portico with columns on the north outside elevation. National Trust Commemorative plate on outside wall to right of east entry door. -

Postcard with a view of Sturt St with an ESCo tram westbound, taken from corner with Doveton St, looking east within an embossed map Australia - no Tasmania. Coat of arms also embossed. Has words "Sturt St Ballarat, Looking East" within photograph. In top left hand corner, has Australian Coat of Arms, partially embossed, printed in blue. Same photograph as in Reg Item 838 and similar to Reg Item 4003 and written originally by the same person. On rear, the post card has been divided into two with a the words "Commonwealth of Australia and Post Card" and artistic symbol with the initials "H&B".Early Commonwealth of Australia postcard, after the Post Master General's department formed late 1900's. Image of the intersection of Sturt and Lydiard Streets looking north towards Lydiard St. Photograph shows a horse drawn tram turning from Sturt into Lydiard St North, while another crosses Lydiard St, heading west along the north side of the street. Photo shows the Post Office, the Robert Burns statue, and the large arc lamp in the middle of the intersection. Two copies held. The St Kilda Soldiers’ Lounge was opened by the St Kilda Patriotic League and the YMCA in 1915, and run by Mrs Lucie Hallenstein. Located in the refreshment rooms of the former Comedy Theatre, Lower Esplanade, it provided a place for returned soldiers to relax and socialise. By mid-1916 the average weekly attendance had reached eight hundred servicemen. Photograph of a horse tram (possibly No. 7), with a Havelock Tobacco advertisement, travelling westbound in Sturt St. on the north side with the City of Ballaarat Town Hall (clock showing 905). Traffic in Sturt St was two-way on either side of the median strip which at the time did not extend fully between Lydiard St and Armstrong St. The photograph includes the gas street lamp in the middle of the Sturt and Lydiard Streets intersection and a telephone/telegraph pole on the right side. Several horse-drawn cabs in the photograph, along with some men. In the background are shops for Cameo Cigarettes, Tea Merchants, C Ekans? Chemist, J T Marsh Hatter, the Town Hall and Snows department store promoting a clearing sale. The photo has been taken from the Post Office Steps, c1890. State Library Multimedia Source Catalogue does not give the name of the photographer and the date of the photo. Printed black and white postcard of an ESCo tram west bound at the intersection of Sturt and Lydiard St. Ballarat, c1906 - 7 - has a destination box. Has a number of pedestrians in the picture. Taken from the east side of the intersection, looking towards the Town Hall, with the National Mutual Insurance building and Snows in the photo. Also shows the overhead arrangements - two wire for Sturt St, single for Lydiard St, coming into the intersection. Titled "Sturt Street, Ballarat" along the top edge. On rear of postcard are the words "Post Card", has initials "WTP" in bottom left hand corner, a 1d Victorian stamp, cancelled 1/5/07, stamp "5". Divided back type. Address to Mrs T.D. Cayett?
