This is a collection of seven photographs of Women’s Royal Australian Army Corps (WRAAC) personnel posted to the Army Headquarters Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo circa 1957 to 1964. After the disbandment of the Australian Women's Army Service (AWAS) in 1947 there was only one or two of civilian women in administrative positions at Fortuna. In February 1957 female positions from the disbanded Southern Command Field Survey Section in Melbourne were transferred to newly established positions at the Army Headquarters Survey Regiment, Bendigo. They were accommodated at the newly acquired ‘Turriff’ mansion in Carpenter Street, Bendigo. Their first Officer Commanding (OC) was CAPT Beryl Perry from 1957 to September 1960. Her replacement as OC was CAPT Carol Castor who served in several positions up to June 1967. The main areas of employment in these early days were in administrative positions, draughting in and retouching in Lithographic Squadron. WO2 MA McLaren was the female to reach the rank of WO2 as a Cartographic Squadron section commander in June 1961. WO1 Marj Knight served at Fortuna from 1959 to 1978 was the first female to reach the rank of WO1. WO1 Knight served in the senior Squadron Sergeant-Major and Technical Warrant Officer positions of Cartographic Squadron. She was also the first female PMC of the Army Survey Regiment SGT’s Mess. The WRAAC uniform seen in this collection was replaced in 1979. This is an Army woollen great coat. Three Bakelite buttons are on the front, one is missing. It has large collars and it has two pockets. On the rear waist is a small fixed belt of similar woollen material. It has epaulettes held down by a brown Bakelite button. The rear has the 'split' with two buttons. This swagger stick belonged to Private Ernest LUCAS who served with the Royal Defence Corps between 17/6/1907 and 18/5/1919 including the 6th Battalion Middlesex Regiment In the British Army before World War I, swagger sticks were carried by all other ranks when off duty as part of their walking out uniform. The stick took the form of a short cane of polished wood, with an ornamented metal head of regimental pattern. The usual custom was for the private soldier or NCO to carry the stick tucked under his arm. Until 1939 swagger sticks were still carried by peacetime regular soldiers when "walking out" of barracks but the practice ceased with the outbreak of World War II. The 6th Battalion Middlesex Regiment can trace its history back to 7 August 1760 as part of the Middlesex Militia. In 1778 it was titled the 1st East Middlesex Militia. By royal order the regiment was later designated the Royal East Middlesex Militia on 24 April 1804. By 1855 it was using the formal title of "1st or Royal East Middlesex Regiment of Militia". In 1900 the number of regular Middlesex Regiment battalions was doubled with the formation of a new the 3rd and 4th battalions; and the two militia battalions were renumbered as 5th and 6th battalions of the regiment. This is a set of 12 photographs of Army teams from the Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo and the Army School of Transport, Puckapunyal attempting a world record playing indoor cricket, at Seymour Victoria from the 31st of January to the 5th of February 1986. The following article appeared on the back page of the ARMY Newspaper on Thursday 6th of March 1986. 'INDOOR CRICKET RECORD SMASHED. ARMY TEAMS from Puckapunyal and Bendigo recently played indoor cricket for 124 hours to set a new world record. The two eight-man teams, from Army School of Transport and Army Survey Regiment, broke the 120 hour record set by Corrimal High School, NSW earlier this year. Organiser of the event, Capt Marty Alsford of AST told ARMY the teams had played 107 games, scoring 15,000 runs in their chase for the record. "The rules allowed a five-minute rest break every hour which could be accrued, so we played for 64 hours straight then had a five hour sleep. "When everybody got up and went straight back into the game with no grumbling, I knew we had the record," Capt Alsford said. The event was held at the Seymour Indoor Cricket Centre, an iron-roofed building with no air-conditioning, and all players had to battle the effect of the stifling heat in addition to fatigue. One player dropped out through exhaustion, but this did not prejudice the record attempt as the rules permitted each team to lose a player who cannot return to the game nor be replaced. The Army teams' effort are now awaiting recognition by the Guinness Book of Records. During the marathon event, the soldiers raised money for Legacy, through sponsorships and a raffle. At the time ARMY went to press, the final figure was not available.’ Army Survey Regiment Routine Orders Part 1 Issue No 16/86 Notices on Page 7 stated: ‘World Record Indoor Cricket. 1.
