Administrative record - Account Book, 1859
John Mitchell was born c. 1830 in Cornwall and travelled to Victoria with his father in 1853. Arriving in Bendigo they both worked as blacksmiths before his father returned to Cornwall. John plied his trade in Mundy Street, Bendigo before selling the business in 1865 after 11 years. Upon the discovery of gold in Western Australia, John travelled there and back three times before dying in Bendigo in 1902. He lived in Violet st., and left a wife, Elizabeth Hannah, and daughter, Mrs E Morris. Early business in Sandhurst in 1850s.An account book used by the John Mitchell to record the purchases and services made with his business. Records date from 1859 - 1868. The book has lost its front cover, but the back cover is still attached. The book is made up of several sections stitched together and bound with three pieces of cotton cloth. The pages are light blue with ruled columns. There are alphabetical tabs at the front of the book with lists of names. Individual customers are allocated a double page entry. Pages numbers are written at the top of pages. The book is in very poor condition having obvious signs of water and insect damage with visible patches of mold. Harry Montague Marks was born at Pall Mall Bendigo on the 1st October 1855. At age 18 he worked for Goldsborough & Co in Melbourne learning land, wool and banking business. He returned to Bendigo aged 22 to open an auctioneers business which operated on the corner of Williamson and Hargraves Streets. Councillor Marks was elected to the seat of Darling in May 1893 and remained serving until 1902. He served as Mayor once only from 1896-97. It was noted in the Bendigo Advertiser on July 3rd 1897 that Mayor Marks appeared in new robes .. made to council order by Messrs Henderson and Goodisson who dealt in highly fashionable goods in the Beehive. (fn https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/page/9088966). It is not know if these robes are still in existence. Harry Marks married Mary Leech in 1881and together they had four sons and one daughter. Harry Marks died in February 1916 aged 60. After his death Mary Marks became the senior partner in the firm HM Marks and Sons auctioneers. Rae Alexander Anderson OAM (1903-1986) was connected to St Paul's Church and a pharmacist at the Bendigo Hospital. Rae was the organist and choir master of the parish church of St Paul, Bendigo, 1931 - 1965. Rae's son Stuart Anderson from the Balgownie Winery 1969-1999; had also been a pharmacist. Rae Anderson was a former President of the Royal Historical Society of Victoria, Bendigo Branch; now the Bendigo Historical Society. Rae died on the 8th. February, 1986 aged 82 years. He was a dedicated pharmacist; an outstanding musician; choir master and organist at St. Paul's Anglican Cathedral; a craftsman who loved to fashion things in wood and brass; interested tn the preservation of our heritage. Rae established "the Anderson Library" at the Society for reading and research.Fifteen Photos of the St Paul's Church of England and an unknown dam. They were restored from a box of glass plate negatives found under a house in Mckenzie Street, Bendigo,.when it was sold. The photos are assumed to be taken by Rae Alexander Anderson and were processed through his pharmacy. Newsletter - The Grapevine Cuttings by Rob Upson - 'The Origin and Naming of Sandhurst', Dec 2002
Rob Upson became a volunteer at the Bendigo Visitor Centre in 1998. The Staff produced a monthly newsletter called ‘The Grapevine’. Being reasonably new to Bendigo, Rob became interested in its history and began writing articles to share with the volunteers. He called them ‘Grapevine Cuttings’ under the pen name of ‘Merlot’. Rob wrote about 90 articles over a period of 12 years until ‘The Grapevine’ was finally pruned and shutdown. Instrument - SANDHURST DRUMMER'S COLLECTION: Drum with red trim
A ring called the hoop is used to attach the head to the shell, and the tuning bolts are tightened to tighten the head. The hoop is supported by the lug, and the hoop and lug are attached using a tuning bolt. Long ago, animal skins were used as drum heads, but now drum heads are primarily made of plastic. Basically, when the tension on the head is higher, the tone is higher, and when the tension is lower, the tone is lower.A Cylinder made of metal and wood 37 centimetres diameter and 21 centimetres high. It has a red, black and white wooden trim on the top and bottom and is held together with six metal clamps. There is a drum head on the top and bottom of the cylinder. Albert Richardson had a life long interest in Bendigo's mining. He wrote broadly about the practical aspects of mining and the history of many of the mining companies. Robert Clark was a self educated man who had arrived in Australia with his step father to take up mining in 1854. He worked in several local mines and being familiar with the hardships associated with mining life helped to establish the eight hour day for miners. Robert married Sarah Jane Kernaghan in 1862 and together they had nine children. Robert Clark was first elected in 1872 and remained a councillor until his death in 1883. Newspaper - LONG GULLY HISTORY GROUP COLLECTION: LONG GULLY FIRE BRIGADE
The Long Gully Fire Brigade was ready for action in October 1873. The operated from a depot near the Wesleyan school room and members had been supplied with uniforms. On the 3rd of October the brigade, led by Captain Phillpot, marched into the city to take possession of a fire engine supplied by Council.Copy of a newspaper article titled A gift for fire station. The photo shows Joyce Green with the photographic portrait of her father's Brigade. There is a picture of Capt. J. Waterson with a plaque under it with Presented to Capt J. Waterson by the officers and members of the Long Gully Fire Briagde. Next part unreadable. Date at the end Nov. 1915 or 18. Other brigade members surround Capt Waterson and the plaque.
