Book, William Collins, Vietnam : an epic tragedy history of a tragic war, 2018
Vietnam became the Western world's most divisive modern conflict, precipitating a battlefield humiliation for France in 1954, then a vastly greater one for the United States in 1975. Max Hastings has spent the past three years interviewing scores of participants on both sides, as well as researching a multitude of American and Vietnamese documents and memoirs, to create an epic narrative of an epic struggle. He portrays the set pieces of Dienbienphu, the Tet offensive, the air blitz of North Vietnam, and less familiar battles such as the bloodbath at Daido, where a US Marine battalion was almost wiped out, together with extraordinary recollections of Ho Chi Minh's warriors. Here are the vivid realities of strife amid jungle and paddies that killed 2 million people. Many writers treat the war as a US tragedy, yet Hastings sees it as overwhelmingly that of the Vietnamese people, of whom forty died for every American. While all the world has seen the image of a screaming, naked girl seared by napalm, it forgets countless eviscerations, beheadings and murders carried out by the communists. The people of both former Vietnams paid a bitter price for the Northerners' victory in privation and oppression. Here is testimony from Vietcong guerrillas, Southern paratroopers, Saigon bargirls and Hanoi students alongside that of infantrymen from South Dakota, Marines from North Carolina, Huey pilots from Arkansas.Index, bibliography, notes, ill, maps, p.722.non-fictionVietnam became the Western world's most divisive modern conflict, precipitating a battlefield humiliation for France in 1954, then a vastly greater one for the United States in 1975. Book, William Collins, Reach for the sky, 1955
The story of Douglas Bader's life is the stuff of legend. After losing both his legs in a flying accident he returned to the RAF at the beginning the Second World War to become Britain's most famous airman and hero. In the Battle of Britain he led his squadron of Spitfires to kill after kill, keeping them going with his unstoppable banter. Shot down in occupied France, his German captors had to confiscate his tin legs in order to stop him trying to escape. And Bader faced it all, disability, leadership and capture, with a charm and determination that was to become an inspiration to all around himIndex, ill (b/w plates), p.342.non-fictionThe story of Douglas Bader's life is the stuff of legend. Book, William Heineman, 1914 : the year the world ended, 2013
Few years can justly be said to have transformed the earth: 1914 did. In July that year, Germany, Austria-Hungary, Russia, Britain and France were poised to plunge the world into a war that would kill or wound 37 million people, tear down the fabric of society, uproot ancient political systems and set the course for the bloodiest century in human history. In the longer run, the events of 1914 set the world on the path toward the Russian Revolution, the Treaty of Versailles, the rise of Nazism and the Cold War. In 1914: The Year the World Ended, award-winning historian Paul Ham tells the story of the outbreak of the Great War from German, British, French, Austria-Hungarian, Russian and Serbian perspectives.Index, bib, ill, maps, p.640.non-fictionFew years can justly be said to have transformed the earth: 1914 did. Book, Pan, Defeat into victory, 2009
Field Marshall William Slim stands alongside Montgomery as the outstanding British Field commander of the Second World War. "Defeat into victory" is his classic account of the Burma campaign : a story of retreat, attrition and a final hard fought victory over the Japanese. Book, William Heinemann, The Wolf : how one German raider terrorised Australia and the southern oceans in the first world war, 2010
The true story of an epic voyage of destruction in World War One. July 1917: the First World War is about to enter its fourth horrendous year and ships are mysteriously disappearing off Australia and New Zealand, as a young Australian woman named Mary Cameron sails with her husband and daughter across the Pacific Ocean from San Francisco to Sydney. Less than a thousand miles from Sydney, a black-hulled freighter appears out of the vast blue emptiness, and Mary and her daughter rush to the deck to greet her. Suddenly, two hinged iron sections of the freighter's bulwarks drop down to reveal she is bristling with guns. She is in fact the German warship the Wolf, and the Cameron family are about to find themselves captive on one of the century's most extraordinary wartime sea voyages.Index, bib, ill, maps, p.384.non-fictionThe true story of an epic voyage of destruction in World War One. Book, William Heinemann, Sandakan : the untold story of the Sandakan Death Marches, 2013
The untold story of the Sandakan death marches of World War II. After the fall of Singapore, in February 1942, the Japanese conquerors rounded up tens of thousands of British and Australian soldiers and shipped them to prison camps scattered throughout Hirohito's newly won Empire. The fall of Britain's 'impregnable fortress' was the greatest humiliation in British military history, for which Churchill never forgave the Japanese. But nothing would surpass the wretched fate of some 2,700 British and Australian prisoners who were shipped to British North Borneo later that year. They landed in Sandakan, on the east coast of the island, after a 10-day voyage on a Japanese 'hell' ship, and were herded into a jungle camp some eight miles inland. Thus began the three-year ordeal of the Sandakan prisoners of war - a barely known story of unimaginable horror.Index, bibliography, notes, ill, p.688.non-fictionThe untold story of the Sandakan death marches of World War II. Photograph - Railway Reserve, Sandridge, William Paterson, 1870s
One of a series assembled for the Melbourne Exhibition of 1873, original mount hanging in Engineering Department at Port Melbourne Town Hall at 19-9-1994. This set of prints belonged to Town Clerk Syd ANDERSON, then to his daughter-in-law Phyllis ANDERSON (donor). Accompanied by list of captions, both hand written and typed (the latter a partial listing). View from pedestrian bridge over railway, looking southeast over 'ornamental' Railway Reserve, 1870s. Probably taken from footbridge just north of Raglan Street; open space is believed to be swamp drainage area between Raglan and Spring Street. (Location usually attributed to Farrell Street - i.e. taken from footbridge at Bridge and Station, but this proves unlikely as there had been no construction on the swamp between Bridge and Farrell until later.)"P. Anderson" ink, on back:"10" ballpoint, on upper left face of phototransport - railways, built environment, parks and gardens, sydney sims anderson, town clerks, railway reserve, station street -
