Document - Golden City Implements Foundry, Ironbark, Bendigo, 1960-1980s
This foundry had been a landmark in Mt Korong Road for many years. It began with an Osborne and Mitchell. After 1914 when mining declined, it became the Golden City Implement boundary and the name can still be seen painted on on the façade which faces the intersection of Marong Road (Calder highway) and Eaglehawk Road. The interior is a mass of used and un-used machinery scattered amongst modern lathes and more modern apparatus. The yard was a fascinating graveyard of past times, with old mining and agricultural scrap everywhere mixed up with coke and slag from the smelting sheds at the rear. A feature of the foundry was the manufacturer of cast iron lace. National Trust Survey Data Sheet and article from the Bendigo Advertiser November 4th 1981. Document - Harvey Town Eaglehawk, Bendigo, Victoria, 1958
Harvey Town was once a large mining area with its own shops, churches and hotels. The four remaining stone cottages were built by the Harvey Family between the 1850s and the 1870s. They were obviously the most substantial buildings in the area at the time. Three of the cottages have been classified as a group by the National Trust and the citation describes them as follows: A group of three simple sandstone cottages built by the Harvey Family of Cornish stonemasons in about 1875. The cottages are all of a very simple design with small windows and no ornamentation. They are in good condition and inhabited at the present time.Numerous photo copies of stone cottages with notes on the location and history.history, national trust bendigo collection, bendigo, harvey town, eaglehawk -

Letter - Kelly and Allsop collection: Amalgamated Hill End
Situated 150 miles from Sydney and 50 miles from Bathurst, Hawkin's Hill mining leases had produced good returns in the 1860's and 70's. However, a lack of working capital meant that many of the mines operated by up to 17 different companies petered out. About 1886 efforts were made to consolidate these claims but insufficient funding could be found. With the renewal of an offer of a government subsidy and the sale of shares, has allowed the purchase of these old claims and their infrastructure. Exploration has shown that these old mines still contained payable amounts of gold. Thus the formation of the Amalgamated Hill End Company.Typewritten letter dated 2nd February 1911. The letter is from the Amalgamated Hill End Ltd signed by the secretary, addressed to M.P. Kelly Esq. stock and share broker, Bendigo. The letter advises of the upcoming float on the stock market of the Amalgamated Hill End Mines. The float is for 500,000 shares at four shilling each. Copies of the prospectus will be sent once available.A lot of sums in pencil on front and backamalgamated hill end mine, shares -

Document - The Faces of China - Bendigo, Eaglehawk, Mines and Missionaries
George Young arrived in Australia in 1856-7 and settled in Eaglehawk where he was the mining manger in a firm that extracted gold from tailings using cyanide. In 1917 it was recalled by the Eaglehawk manager of the Commercial Bank of Australia that he employed about 70 men in his firm. In 1884 he successfully applied through Sergent John Gleeson for Victorian naturalisation. His application was processed along with five others. According to an article in the Australasian he was 'highly respected' in Eaglehawk for his 'uprightness and integrity'. The Bendigo Advertiser described him as being 'held in high esteem' and being 'a kind and benevolent man'. He made donations to the Bendigo Benevolent Asylum and Hospital on a number of occasions and was involved in organising the Chinese performance in the Bendigo Easter Fair in 1879. In June 1900, after his elder brother's death in 1899, George Young returned to China at his father's request to manage the family property. His Chinese-born wife and six Australian-born children accompanied him. Prior to his departure a portrait of the Young family was published in the Australasian and given to prominent citizens of Eaglehawk. A banquet was also given by the citizens of Eaglehawk to see the family off and George Young was presented with an illuminated address. The Faces of China - Bendigo, a presentation author unknown, photo copy of Seo (George) Young and his family with two paragraphs description of Chinese mines and missionaries on the gold fields. Document - DAVID BANNEAR, THE GOLDFIELDS LANDSCAPE - PROPOSED TALK, 2/11/2023
The goldfields resulted in the almost complete denuding of trees for access to the gold bearing land, for firewood and for the tanning industry. The need for wood further increased with the advent of deep quartz mining that required timbers for shoring up the shafts and tunnels. At some point in time it became necessary for timber to be carted long distances to fulfil the need. Between 1878 and 1884, the government set up 5 nurseries to try and rectify the shortage of native softwoods and encouraged the growth of State plantations and the thinning of trees to encourage growth of those remaining. 1907 - Creswick School of Forestry and Forest Management was started 1919 Establishment of the Forests Commission and the planting of many pine plantations 1924 Establishment of the first fire spotting towers Forest management tasks became a main project for "Susso" recipients during the Great Depression and again for internees during WWII.An 8 page document by David Bannear about the various industries of the Bendigo Goldfields and their effects on terraforming the local environment david bannear, central goldfields -
