Note book, Fanny Wridgway's nature study note book, 1907-1908
Jessie McCleverty had a private ladies school in 2 locations in Surrey Hills in the early 1900s. She is not registered in teacher records at PROV. According to Jocelyn Hall's notes her school was located at 12 Durham Road from 1903-1905/6 and from then until 1933 at 44 Windsor Crescent. The earliest date in Sands & MacDougall is c1902 and according to the Victorian Government Gazette 1924, the school closed in 1923. [1933 may be a typo.] She was born in Melbourne in 1862 daughter of George McCleverty and Mary Gill. She had a brother William Edward, b1858, Ballarat East. Her parents may have migrated independently from Ireland. They married in 1856. By 1931 she was retired but still living in Surrey Hills. It is unclear exactly when she moved to Queensland, but she is listed on the electoral roll there for 1943 living with her niece Frances Victoria Shepperd and she died on 26 Jul 1943. She is buried in Toowoomba Cemetery. Fanny Wridgway (1890-1956) was born in Box Hill, the daughter of Frederick Wridgway and his wife Mary Ann (nee Young). She had an older brother Alfred and a younger sister Mary Ann. Box Hill Reporter entry gives her attending Banff Ladies' College in Box Hill in 1904 and she was dux of the school in 1905. Although the original donor indicated that Fanny was a teacher, she is not registered on the PROV Victorian Teachers' Roll. Electoral roll entries consistently indicate that her occupation was 'clerk'. She is buried in Box Hill Cemetery, along with her sister Mary Ann. No information found regarding W M Nance. This a fine example of the standard of work required of a senior student for examination purposes in 1907/1908.An exercise book with alternating lined and plain paper. Joan Richard was a speaker at the Surrey Hills Historical Society meeting in November 2013. A watercolourist, she has been a long standing member of MSWPS, Past and Recent President in 2017 and a Life Member. The Melbourne Society of Women Painters and Sculptors was founded in 1902 by women who had been students at the Art School of the National Gallery of Victoria, to provide a forum for artistic discussion and an opportunity to view and comment on each other's work. Originally named the Students' Art Club, it became "Woomballana" (meaning either 'everlasting beauty' or 'search for beauty') Art Club, The Women's Art Club, the Melbourne Society of Women Painters and finally, in 1954, the present title was adopted. The history of the MSWPS and its members’ achievements, issues of the workplace, family and art commitments, the economic survival of artists, migrant artists and prejudice against women are also explored. Much of the information in “More Than Just Gumtrees” has not been available in previous publications; it includes hitherto unpublished sources - oral history interviews, minute books, reviews, letters, early photographs. Artefact, School Satchel, Circa 1900
Satchels such as these were commonly used by young boys to carry their lunch and school items between school and home. They were used commonly in the days when much of the requirements such as slates and paper were used as class sets. They proved to be serviceable and required only the most basic of maintenace as in stitching, to be kept in good order. Being adjustable they would also serve a student for a number of years. No information is available on Henry Alexander Cain of Surrey Hills.A common item with which many people would identify.Brown leather rectanular satchel with gusset on either side . It is fastened on the front with two metal buckles and has four adjustable leather back straps attached to the bag with metal studs. These are adjustable through holes in the leather straps. Likewise the front straps can be fastened in a number of different holes. The leather has an overall snake skin pattern.Solid leather is stamped in the leather on the front. henry Alexander Cain ******Rd Surrey Hillswarrnambool, school history, boy's school bag -

Photograph - Electric tramway construction in Riversdale Road [Surrey Hills], E.J. Dower, 1916
Contextual or historic information One of a series of photographs, taken by Edgar James Dower in the second decade of the twentieth century. Born and raised in Olinda, his family later moved to Surrey Hills. He worked as an adult as a clerk in the city office of the Metropolitan Gas Company, and in his role as a 'collector', he was able to photograph scenes including the construction of tramlines and associated buildings in Kew, Hawthorn, Camberwell and Surrey Hills. Later he established a real estate agency with his brother - the E.J. Dower Real Estate Agency, Dandenong Office. The image is an historically significant record of the development of transport infrastructure which was used to connect Victorians in the first two decades of the twentieth century. This development resulted from increases in population and the consequent extension of Melbourne's suburbs. The photographs, both individually and collectively, richly detail the labour of workers and the tools and machinery used to create and extend Melbourne's tram network in the years preceding and during World War 1.Digital copy of an original mounted photograph of construction of the electric tramline in Riversdale Road, Surrey Hills.Annotated verso: "Showing the commencement of preparing for electric trams in Riversdale Road / Taken from the corner of Union Road, note Essex road on right with picket fencing"theme --- travelling by tram, theme -- connecting victorians by transport and communications, trams -- boroondara (vic.), tramlines -- surrey hills -
