The card was sent by James Henry Wicks to his sister, unknown. After serving in the 7th Batt, J H Wicks transfered to the 5th Machine Gun Batt AIF in France. He returned home in 1919Greeting card.The outer card is a parchment type paper fawn in colour. The front cover has a yellow ribbon band rectangular in shape glued to the card. A rectangular card is glued over this. The card contains flowers, an image of a church or mosque in a half circle. Above this to the right is wording. The first newsletter of the Society was issued May 1978 and has been published continuously ever since on a bi-monthly basis. With the cessation of the Shire of Eltham in late 1994, the Society's name was revised to Eltham District Historical Society and this name first appeared with issue No. 103, July 1995. The store was started by Richard Sutton, and was later run by his sons, including inventor Henry Sutton. Valentine Claude (Claude) Knight (1871-1974) was the son of Caroline Knight who later married Henry Joh Batten in 1876. Claude married Catherine Martha Roberts in 1914. When 'Bolac Plains' was subdivided in 1846 Henry Gibb took up the northern end and he named the property 'Eilyer'. 'Eilyer' was bought from the estate of Henry Gibb in 1864 by Josiah and Thomas Austin. Gibb had been killed the year before when he fell from a horse. At the time of purchase, 'Eilyer' was 30,000 acres in size. It was later divided up and the second section become known as "Myuna". Amelia Allan (Amy) Jacobs on her marriage to James Dodgshun in 1916; photographed at the home of her grandfather, "Terreglea" in Boundary (Warrigal) Road, Surrey Hills. Amelia attended Ormiston Girls' School in Mont Albert soon after its opening in 1900. Her mother was Eleanor Mills, youngest daughter of Robert Shortbridge Mills and Ann Lovelady. She died soon after the birth of Amy. Her father was Henry Atwood Jacobs. Following Eleanor's death Henry married Amy Lilian Scales. Raleighs Road - Property of the Raleigh family descendants of Reiersen family from Norway. Henry and wife Catherine had a small wooden house near Djerriwarrh Creek. Their daughters Catherine married Robinson, and Henrietta married Isaac Robinson of “Creighton” Toolern Vale Road. Henry’s Brother Oliver married Margaret McLean. Their children were, Elsie, Rupert, Lois, Annie, Albert and Olga. She died in September 1986. She was a long term organist at the Presbyterian Church. This jardinière is one of many 19th and early 20th century items donated to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village by the Giles Family. It would have been used to contain a pot plant or similar foliage to decorate a room. Donated to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village by, Vera and Aurelin Giles this item is associated with Warrnambool and the Giles Family history. Many items have been donated by the family and have come to be known as the “Giles Collection”. Many items in the Lighthouse Keeper’s Cottage that were donated by Vera and Aurelin Giles mostly came from the home of Vera’s parents-in-law, Henry Giles and his wife Mary Jane (nee Freckleton) who married in 1880 and whose photos are on display in the parlour. Henry was born at Tower Hill in 1858, and was a labourer on the construction of the Warrnambool Breakwater before leaving in 1895 for around seven years to build bridges in NSW. Mary Jane was born in 1860 at Cooramook and she attended Mailor’s Flat State School and where she eventually was to become a student teacher. After which she became a governess at “Injemiara” where her grandfather, Francis Freckleton, had once owned land. Henry and Mary’s family consisted of six, some of the children were born at Mailor’s Flat and later some children at Wangoom. They lived with their parents at Wangoom and Purnim west, and this is where Henry died in 1933 and Mary Jane in 1940. The Giles family collection has social significance at a local level, because it illustrates the level of material support the Warrnambool community gave to Flagstaff Hill when the Museum was established. It also represents typical furniture and household goods owned by settlers in the Warrnambool District in the late 19th and early 20th century. On the 12th of March 1891 documents show Ann Myer’s application for a dairy. A small addition to the front right side of the house can be seen in the photo of Ann and her two sons. The dairy remained until the house was demolished in 1969. Mary Dowling’s sisters Ann and Eliza appear on the shipping list to Australia arriving in Melbourne as assisted immigrants on the ‘Hotspur’ on the 25th June 1855. Their ages were recorded as 19 and 20 years. Ann Dowling’s records contains receipts for the rent of land in the parish of Kororoit in 1865. In 1867 Ann married Henry Miers at St Patricks Cathedral on the 28th May at age 26 years. Other spelling of the family name have been spelt, Miers, Myres, Mears and eventually became Myers. Henri came from Prussia but little information about his life before he married Ann. Ann and Henri had a small house built c1860 near Ryans Creek also known a Myers Gully. Henry was a labourer. According to notes in Edna’s research the original house consisted of two rooms and was built by Russell, and more rooms were added later built by Paddy Burns, the grandfather of Nick Burns. Additions were made to extend the south veranda and north further skillion rooms were added.Ann and Henri had four sons, Henry born in 1870, Thomas in 1872, George in 1874 and Frederick in 1877. By the December of 1886 tragedy struck again when father Henry fell from the top of a hay wagon at Darlingsford when the driver Ralph Parkinson failed to warn him the horses where about to move. Henry asked to be taken home where he died the next day. Henri Miers was aged 51 years at his death. The Parkinson family paid compensation for causing the death of Henry. Ralph Parkinson died shortly after. The Myers boys received their education at Melton State School. Their handwriting is testament to the benefit of receiving an education to grade 8. Frederick the youngest son gained his Merit Certificate on the 10th of October 1889. They also received books inscribed by the Head Teacher. Ann was illiterate and was aged about 15 years when she arrived in Australia and was dependent on youngest son Frederick. Although at a disadvantage she managed her legal affairs. Frederick Myers married Martha Watson in 1908. Thomas Myers died in November 1909 Ann Dowling Myers died in October 1924. She lived in the family home with Martha Fred, grandson Fred and granddaughters Marjorie and Edna who was aged six at her death. Henry Stanley established Stanley Rule and Level Co. in 1857. In the following decade steel hand planes began to replace wooden planes. This decorative plane is an 1886 model, with several options to adjust the plane to suit the work. The antique plane displays quality workmanship of the 1880s. It was designed for hard work, replacing lighter wooden planes that were unsuitable for the big jobs. It was made by Stanley Rule and Level, a firm renowned for its good quality tools and now operating as Stanley Black and Decker.Plane; Beading type maker Stanley Rule & Level Co, patented in 1886.
