Murray Comrie Collection. There were four banks in Tarnagulla at one stage, but two - the National Bank and the Bank of Australasia - were open for a short period only. The single-storey brick building at far left was built in 1859 and used by the Union Bank until 1888, and was later renamed 'Lochcarron' and used as premises by doctors and dentists. The two-storey building (right) was built in 1866 by the Colonial Bank of Australasia. Before this, the site had been occupied by Foo's shop. Whilst it was being built, the Colonial Bank operated from Company's Hotel (later known as Burstall Hall and the Council Chambers). The double-storey building in this image was used by the Colonial Bank from 1866 until 21st February, 1888. The premises were sold to the Union Bank for £2500. The Union Bank moved in and commenced operations on 6th June 1888, continuing until 1942. The building was later used as a general store until the 1990s. Both buildings are now private residences. This is a reasonable copy of an older original. Copy probably made by Murray Comrie in the 1970s. The 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles was raised as a regiment of the Royal Australian Armoured Corps on 1 May 1948 with Headquarters in Melbourne and squadrons in Sale, Benalla/Wangaratta and Albury. In 1955 Regimental Headquarters moved to Wangaratta and a second squadron was located at Albury. The Sale squadron transferred to 4th/19th Prince of Wales’s Light Horse. In 1977 8/13 VMR Regiment was reduced to an independent squadron A Squadron 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles and in 1991 was linked with 4th/19th Prince of Wales’s Light Horse forming the VMR Squadron of that regiment. Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) was invented in Italy in the late 1930s. ECT is a medical treatment most commonly used in patients with severe major depression or bipolar disorder that has not responded to other treatments. Another person appears to have hold of a hose (could be oxygen) and the back view of the other person appears to be working with them watching what is happening. This could be part of lock construction as there appears to be cranes and a tripod in the distance.This black and white photograph demonstrates historical and social significance in that it gives a close up view of workmen in the process of lock construction. It appears that there is a diver suited up with helmet on, descending the ladder and a person holding what appears to be hose connected to the person diving. In 1973 it was decided too much money would have to be spent to restore Grampian House Guest House to its original glory after a clearing auction it was demolished by Bawalda Bros. from Horsham. The property was sold to Mr Gary West of Stawell and Mr Lyle Jamieson of Ararat who proposed to build a Tavern-bistro Conference Centre. This did not proceed and the property was auctioned on 14th July 1984 but was passed in a auction. It was later sold to a syndicate of Halls Gap businessmen, Mr. Keith Smith, Mr. John Ingram and Mr Arthur Mangle. It is historically significant (Criterion A) as the home of Sir George Stephen, MLA for Collingwood, barrister and mining investor and for its capacity to demonstrate Caulfield's early attraction as a residential retreat for Melbourne's eminent citizens. It is aesthetically significant (Criterion E) as a villa residence characteristic of the mid Victorian period, predating the use of cast iron and comparing in this respect with Charles Webb's "Farleigh" (1865) at 6 Farleigh Grove, Brighton. Its substantial nature causes it to be the earliest surviving mansion house in the Municipality. The porch, external austerity and opulent entrance hall and staircase are important contributory elements whilst the survival of the exterior surfaces predominantly in an unpainted state enhances its level of integrity.
