Equipment - Floor Polisher, c1954
Used by donors for polishing wooden and lino floor in the 1950s and 1960s in their home at 16 McDowall Street, Mitcham.Three brush 'Electrolux' floor Polisher/ Scrubber with polish container and three scrubber brushes, and a remotely operated polish container. It has a 'tee' shape handle which is adjustable in height to polish under tables etc. There is provision for attaching a polish container to the polisher. Flow of polish ie regulated by a chain attached to handle. Handle also has clips for holding the power cord when stored. Body of polisher is squat triangular- shape finished in red and gunmetal grey. Originally owned and used by Zemster Brothers of "Brook Mount" Shellbourne.Known as "Aunty Jack"Large 4 wheeled 9 HP single cylinder (horizontal) steam engine, designed to be towed. Front wheels smaller than rear. Folding smoke stack with spark arrestor. Fire box and smoke stack painted black, boiler and steam cylinder green, wheels grey. In working order but engine is connected to an independent steam/air source to be operated for display purposes. 150 cm flywheel on LHS looking forward toward the front. Timber front turntable and back brake pad assembly. Brass water drain tap on firebox. Also other brass fittings on firebox.On brass ring near top of firebox:- "Serial No. 5672, Marshal Sons & Co. / Limited / Engineers / Gainsborough England". Miss Olive Codling was a Foundation Member and a Life Member of the Wodonga Historical Society. Many of her prize-winning photos are held in the Society Collection. She also held a range of roles and committee positions in a wide range of Wodonga community organisations. These included the Horticultural Society, the Wodonga Arts Council, the Wodonga Camera Club and the Wodonga Lapidary Club. This photo collection is significant as it documents how the businesses and buildings in Wodonga have evolved and contributed to community throughout the 20th century.Buildings in High Street just south of the intersection with South Street, Wodonga. Businesses including Chitty's Antiques, Hoover City Chinese Restaurant, Phegan Real Estate and Jay Dean Construction. Between Hoover City and Phegan's was Number 90 High Street. Harris Lieberman Solicitors was at that location in the mid 1970s. In 2021, a hairdresser operates out of the former Phegan's store and Hoover City is the location of Rock 'n' Roll Roasts. Chitty's Antiques occupied part of the former Bank of N.S.W. premises. Elaine was a teacher in Wodonga for many years and an active member of the community.This photo collection is of significance as it documents how the businesses and buildings in Wodonga have evolved and contributed to community throughout the late 20th century.Melba Hall/old Shire Offices and Dr. Grant’s Surgery located on the corner of High Street and Melbourne Road. The building was constructed in 1890. Dr. Grant Sr.'s Surgery was in the house on the left. These were Wodonga’s second shire offices. The Wodonga Council operated from these chambers from 1890 until 1957 when they moved to Woodland Grove building. The Gas Company then took over the old Shire Hall. The entrance to the Melba Theatre is on the far right. The Melba Theatre screened its last film in 1968. The central Wodonga building was sold in 2011 and Bill and his wife Debbie moved the stock to their warehouse in Bandiana. They operated from Bandiana while also focusing on online selling. Sign - "AIR BRAKE OPERATING END"
Demonstrates how the SEC used signage to communicate important information to staff.An enameled metal plate sign in an off-white colour, hand painted with black lettering. The sign reads "AIR BRAKE OPERATING END". The sign is curved, and all four corners have been angled. There is a hole in each of the corners to enable attachment to the tram cab. Horizontal lines have been drawn to ensure the even height and spacing of the lettering. The back of the sign has been painted a brass colour, although some of this has flaked off with wear. Machine - BABY DAISY: HAND OPERATED BELLOWS VACUUM CLEANE
Hand operated Bellows vacuum cleaner. Previously #27 The “Baby Daisy” Vacuum Cleaner is constructed from timber, steel and leather bellows. It has a carry handle fixed to the top. The base is approx. 500mm x 250mm. The height is approx 400mm. On one side is a bracket for a handle (missing) used to operate the bellows. The device is mounted on a foot plate that is split. On one side of the bellows is a circular metal detachable hatch, fixed by wing-nuts. This has a central hole for a tube (missing). Attached internally to this hatch is a cloth dust collection bag. The metal hatch has the following moulded words arranged in a circular fashion. 'DAISY Vacuum Cleaner). There are two brass plates fixed to the side of the cleaner above the hatch. These plates are stamped with 'Rd. No. 518080 and Rd. No. 530353' Gold printed Labels on the side say the following. BABY DAISER Vacuum Cleaner. Registered England. No. 518080/7 No. 530353/08 Trade Mark No.294851 /07 Designs France No. 25469/08 Germany No. 330219 / 08 Further Patents applied for. In the centre of the label is a picture of a Daisy Flower. With the words Iles Patent. This is surrounded by a ribbon with the words. 'The Daisy Registered Trade Mark'. Elaine Mann was married to David Mann, a successful Wodonga businessman and community leader who passed away in Wodonga in June 2012. David was a member of the Mann family who began their business in Wodonga in 1920. Elaine was a teacher in Wodonga for many years and an active member of the community.This photo collection is of significance as it documents how the businesses and buildings in Wodonga have evolved and contributed to community throughout the late 20th century.These businesses were located just north of the railway crossing between Melbourne Road and Bond Street. The railway signals can be seen in the background above Peter’s Fish Café. These buildings have all been demolished and the area is now part of Junction place. Jim Matthews was selling Radiola car radios. He also sold used furniture and had a bike repair business at this location, before later expanding his bike business on the south of the railway crossing, Peters Cafe was at 103 High Street. It was operated by the Bouteris family in the early 1970s. It later became the Chao Thai Restaurant. Vee Jay Radio was operated by Mr. Albert Eddie Branwhite. He moved to Wodonga in 1946 and started selling radio repairs door to door. He then set up his store in 105 High Street. This site had previously been a barber’s shop. The business involved electrical repairs and appliance sales. In the late 1950s Mr. Branwhite established the Wodonga Express. He set the type and printed from the back of this shop until relocating to the Lincoln Causeway. He was actively involved in the community, including many years on the Wodonga Hospital Board of Management which was recognised with a life governorship. The two storey facade of the Ringwood Town Hall was built in 1927 at a cost of 6,000 pounds. Behind it the council worked out of the old mechanics institute. As the need for space grew, the first Ringwood fire station, the baby health centre and council's health department squeezed onto the site. A free library and cinema also operated from the town hall for many years.Two lumps of concrete from the facade of the old Ringwood Town Hall.
