According to the 1912 Department of Mines Bulletin of the Geological Survey of Victoria, basalt covers a considerable portion of the Macedon area including Mount Macedon. Basalt is the most common form of rock underlying the earth's surface and is found in three kinds of rock forming environments: ocean divergent boundaries, oceanic hotspots, and mantle plumes and hotspots beneath continents.This specimen is part of a larger collection of geological and mineral specimens collected from around Australia (and some parts of the world) and donated to the Burke Museum between 1868-1880. A large percentage of these specimens were collected in Victoria as part of the Geological Survey of Victoria that begun in 1852 (in response to the Gold Rush) to study and map the geology of Victoria. Collecting geological specimens was an important part of mapping and understanding the scientific makeup of the earth. Photographs of title documents related to the Sister’s Rocks. c 1867. In 1866 a photographer Mr. O.G. Armstrong feared the Sister's Rock's would be used for building material. Mr. Armstrong and Samuel John Davidson squatter of Great Western leased the ground around the Rock's under the 42nd section of then existing "Land Act" enclosing the rocks with a rough fence. Davidson's lease application was dated 30th Jan 1867. The area applied for was 10 acres and issued 2nd July 1867. The fee paid 2 pound 10 shillings annually till July 1871 when an application to purchase was lodged. Two years later the land was transferred to the Borough of Stawell. It is thought that early rocking chairs were designed as a means of helping busy mothers rock their babies on their laps while keeping their hands free for other household chores such as knitting or sewing chores. They could use their legs and back to create the rocking motion instead o holding them and swaying side to side. An elaborate turned wooden framed rocking chair with spring 'rockers'. It has a brown and cream swirled patterned fabric seat and back panel as well as on the turned arm rests. This is attached with antique upholstery tacks.There is a castor on each of the four legs for manoeuvrability. Rock formation is called " The Woolpacks " and was located on the Wonderland Track at the top of Silent Street -- however on a Broadbent map of the Grampians no.205 this formation was called the " Wool Sacks " ; and the "Woolpacks" was shown on the map close to Venus Bath.Photo shows distinct slabs of rock balancing on each other. Loch Ard was bound for Melbourne in 1878 loaded with passengers and cargo when it ran into a rocky reef at the base of Mutton Bird Island, near Port Campbell. Of the 54 crew members and passengers on board, only two survived: an apprentice, Tom Pearce and a young woman passenger, Eva Carmichael, who lost all of her family in the tragedy. The wreck of Loch Ard still lies at the base of Mutton Bird Island and much of the cargo has been salvaged. Some was washed up into what is now known as Loch Ard Gorge following the shipwreck. Cargo and artefacts have also been illegally salvaged over many years before protective legislation was introduced. The photograph is significant for its association with the wreck of the Loch Ard. This wreck has been protected as a Historic Shipwreck since 11 March 1982, under the Commonwealth Historic Shipwrecks Act (1976) Flagstaff Hill’s collection of artefacts from Loch Ard is significant for being one of the largest collections of artefacts from this shipwreck in Victoria. It is significant for its association with the shipwreck, which is on the Victorian Heritage Register. The collection is significant because of the relationship between the objects, as together they have a high potential to interpret the story of the Loch Ard. The Loch Ard collection is archaeologically significant as the remains of a large international passenger and cargo ship. The Loch Ard collection is historically significant for representing aspects of Victoria’s shipping history and its potential to interpret sub-theme 1.5 of Victoria’s Framework of Historical Themes (living with natural processes). The collection is also historically significant for its association with the Loch Ard, which was one of the worst and best known shipwrecks in Victoria’s history. The Loch Ard collection meets the following criteria for assessment: Criterion A: Importance to the course, or pattern, of Victoria’s cultural history. Criterion B: Possession of uncommon, rare or endangered aspects of Victoria’s cultural history. Criterion C: Potential to yield information that will contribute to an understanding of Victoria’s cultural history. This specimen was found in Carrara, Italy. Carrara marble is the most common marble found in Italy, and it gets its name from the region where it is located. The marble was also called Luna marble and was used as a decorative element in buildings and sculptures. It has been quarried since Roman times in the Lunigiana, the northernmost tip of Tuscany, just outside the city of Carrara in the province of Massa and Carrara.Marble is one of the most popular and expensive rocks used in sculpture, architecture, interior decorations, statues, table tops, and novelties. It is available in various colors and textures depending on the chemical composition. The strength of the rock and its ability to hold finer details have made it a favorite among designers.
