.1 - handwritten notes - small sheet giving notes on the agreement with Mr Westcott and a letter dated 20/11/1923 from Mr Westcott to Mr Strangward giving his estimate of commission for the sale of adverting on tramcars and tickets. .2 - Report - single foolscap sheet titled "Electric cars and Northcote Cable cars", looking at the commission Mr. Westcott earns from the sale of advertising on tramcars and on the back of tickets it appears. Gives current position, Mr Strangward's and Mr Westcott's estimate based on the number of electric cars in service. Gives a recommendation as to future arrangements. Initialled "WOS 26/11/23". Report - hand made on very thin paper, almost rice paper, 3 pages + cover note of 2/11/1921 to Mr. Wilcox, General Manager from Mr. C. W. Young and W. A. Savage, Assist Traffic Manager titled "Proposed Flying City Shunt". Report suggests that improved shunting arrangements are needed at Collins and Spencer St due to increased traffic. Notes cars can be shunted in abnormal conditions in 40 seconds. Normal shunting was 60secs it appears. Report gives details of the costs and the shunting times taken to turn cable sets around. The cover note of 2/11/1921, re-submits the report to Mr Dix from a person (can read the signature) from the Fitzroy Power House. Last page was scanned separately as a jpg file. Magazine - 20 A4 pages centre stapled - titled "MetLines - Vol 1, No. 9 December 1985", staff newspaper of the Metropolitan Transit Authority. Has a number of "Santa Claus" on the front cover. Contains an article on page 8, "Keeping tram lines clean" and "Scrubber Cars" - featuring Frank Reale-Key posing in front of Scrubber 8W. Also has a photo of scrubber No. 11. Gives a background to the cars, when they are used, operated by Civil Branch. Gives hours of use and crews. Another item is "Tram centenary celebrations a success" - Event and cavalcade of trams on 11/11/1985, celebrating the commencement of the cable car services in Melbourne. Notes the unveiling of a plaque by Mr Roper, assisted by Keith Kings of the TMSV. Other items tramway related are the celebration - 70th marriage celebration of Harry Heaton who worked at Preston, Glenhuntly depot cricket team and on the rear cover a photo of Norm Maddock at the Picnic function at Wattle Park. Black and white photograph of a lightly loaded cable car set, trailer 415, eastbound in Bourke St, nearing Russell St. Set has destination of Nicholson St. The Conductor and Gripman are both on the grip car - "gossiping". In the background are signs for Sharpe's store, Parers Hotel, Lewis's and Normans. On the underside of the photograph written in black ink "Cable Tram in Bourke St Jan 1937" Noelle Jones - 24/5/2021 It is no later than 1946, as Maples purchased the Love & Lewis business (194-6 Bourke St) in that year (the business was being sold by the executors of the owner). Note also that Parer's (not Parkers) Hotel, at 200 Bourke Street, was established in the 1880s by the Parer Brothers, originally from Spain. The most famous member of the family was Damien Parer, the WWII photographer. The building was demolished in 1960, and is the site of the Midcity Arcade. Sharpes bought the property on the left (202-4 Bourke St) in 1954, after being tenants for 20 years. Ticket - light brown paper, "Combined Fare Ticket" - MMTB, over printed with a red 5d, and Ticket Number A B 425191. with conditions of travel on the front. On the rear is printed in red ink is an advert for B. Matthews Pty Ltd, with head office at 102-110 Toorak Road, South Yarra, advertising a Motor Funeral Service. Dean Filgate advised 24-12-2020: Unfortunately an un-used example, from the same block that most collectors obtained one for their collection ! There are genuine used examples of similar 6d (purple overprint) tickets, however I cannot find my "files" about these: there were at least two places this type of ticket was used in the early to mid-1930s. One was a "Combined Fare Ticket to and from the City via The Coburg Electric and Brunswick Cable Cars", the other was used on the Glen Huntly lines to enable passengers to pay only once for their journey to the City, as until 1934 trams from Glen Huntly Depot did not run direct to the City - you had to transfer trams at Elsternwick or Ripponlea.trams, tramways, melbourne, tickets, mmtb, advertisements -

Black and white negative by Wal Jack of U206 and a C Class or N class stored at Preston Workshops. Based on image the number of the second car is number 125. Note the two cable grip cars and the bus body in the background. Rod Atkins advised 11/10/2020: "The bus body is one of the four James Motors of South Melbourne body's first fitted to the group of 12 Thornycroft "J" chassis in 1924-1925 numbered 13 to 24. Then in 1929 they were all transferred to the ADC chassis but four were retained in late thirties to early forties for possible further use. The four bodies were then fitted to the new International K6 chassis in 1943. The vehicle numbers were 19 to 308 16 to 309 24 to 311 and 18 to 312. They were finally disposed of in 1949." "Toorak cable tramway - running timetable" produced by the Melbourne Tramway and Omnibus Company Ltd provides to grip men and conductors their running times on both the up and down trips Gives times in half minutes from the terminus, timing points, locations of major intersections, public buildings passed by the cars and the location of alarm points. Dated 11/09. See item 7359 for the public timetable of 1911.Yields information about the running times for the crews on the cable trams on the Toorak line. Photograph - Section of cable tram track - Bourke St at Spencer St, c1960
The photograph shows a section of remnant track at the intersection of Bourke and Spencer Sts that remained until it was removed on 25/8/1987 when connecting curves were installed at Bourke and Spencer Streets, forming a double track triangular junction, in preparation for the conversion of the St Kilda and Port Melbourne railway lines to 'light rail'. This necessitated the removal of the last few metres of cable car track in Melbourne, which had been left in situ at the former Bourke Street terminus as a reminder of bygone days. Shows two inspection pits in the short section of the cable slot. Photo late 1960s after the construction of the Spencer St railway station building. Used by a cable tram conductor to record the number of 2d fares collected from passengers. The Bell punch recorded the number of times a hole was punched in the slip. They were used by the cable trams until the mid-1920s when they were phased out and replaced by "flimsy" paper tickets. The item has been punched a number of times. Printed for the Tramway Board (1916 to 1919). Has space for 32 journeys. On one side, has space for the name Line, Date, Badge, car, time of starting, and signature, if a student conductor. Printed for use in the up direction. Used on the inside of the doors of a Melbourne Tramway and Omnibus Cable tram saloon trailer along with item 7438. See also item 2907 for another example. Recovered by the donor from a trailer that was in a yard in Dromana shortly before it disappeared. See image 2 of the locations of the signs. Functional object - Tramcar component, Melbourne & Metropolitan Tramways Board (MMTB), Bell cord - for a grip car bell, c1920?
A souvenir from one of the last trams to Port Melbourne. Both the South Melbourne and Port Melbourne cable lines closed on this date. The South Melbourne line was converted to electric traction; the Port Melbourne line was replaced by a bus service. See item 7595 for another bell cord from the same event.Has a close association with the closure of the Port Melbourne cable tram line.Bell cord - for a grip car bell - consisting of a wooden turned handle fitted with a screw at the bottom, a length of sash cord and a cast iron end to which the rope has been glued or fastened into and a hook that went on the underside of the bell itself.
