This painting was purchased at an exhibition at Australian Galleries in 1968. It originally hung in Robin Boyd's office in East Melbourne, and was only brought to Walsh St after he died in 1971. The Australian Galleries was established by Tam and Anne Purves in June 1956. Robin Boyd designed the Purves family home in Kew in 1967. This painting is dedicated to Patricia Boyd, Robin Boyd's wife, on the reverse side. "Night of Love" was exhibited as a complimentary pair with "Days of Gold" at Laycock's 1965 exhibition at South Yarra Gallery, where Robin Boyd purchased it. It hangs in the living/dining room. "Three of the Players", the 1953 painting by John Brack, hung in this position in the Mark Strizic photograph in Robin Boyd's book "Living in Australia" p 80. This oil sketch by Donald Laycock is for "Terra Australis", a large (20' X 8') outback desert scene commissioned by Robin Boyd for the Australian Pavilion at Expo 1970. Robin Boyd was the Exhibit Architect of the Australian Pavilions at Expo '70 in Osaka and Expo '67 in Montreal. This wrought iron "ladder-frame" bookcase, which includes a drop-down table, is located in Suzy's bedroom. A second "ladder-frame" bookcase with desk is located in Penleigh's bedroom (item F085). They were both designed by Bruce Anderson - in the past they have been incorrectly attributed to Clement Meadmore. This type of furniture was featured in 'The Age' Small Homes Service and a similar one was featured in 'The Age' Dream Home Exhibition in 1955. From 1947 to 1953, Robin Boyd was the director of The Small Homes Service, set up by the Royal Victorian Institute of Architects in conjunction with 'The Age' and he produced a weekly article for 'The Age'.Wrought iron black frame with 10 ladder slots, and 3 cross brace frames, with 4 timber shelves. This scale model is an unbuilt Boyd design for a project names Carnich Towers on 60 Clarendon St, East Melbourne. Boyd's perspective drawings from the late 1960's show the influence of Japanese Metabolist thinking in his late work. Boyd designed the exhibition for the opening of the Australian Chancery in Washington DC held in June 1969. He designed six cylindrical clear acrylic display cases. One of these exhibits used an anamorphic optical illusion, using compressed images which had normal proportions when viewed through a lens of the half-cylindrical display cases. These bookends were designed as a small scale model for the Chancery exhibition.
