Both Green coats are large sizes (Korean Made) Current Coats used now by Tarndwarncoort are made in China from Nylon material. These coats were decorated by year 12 students at Colac High School for Fashions on the field (no sign of this is visible on the coats. The coats come along with several articles written by Wendy Dennis about her methods of producing coloured wool and growing sheep. A series of photographs are also provided which add to the provenance and significance of the items. Used by the Dennis Family at Tarndwarncoort. Prominent woll growing pastoralist and settler family at the historic Tarndwarncoort homestead. These types of coats are used to protect fine grade and high quality wool while still on the sheep's back. This is an auction catalogue for the Holly Green estate, 'Victoria's Oldest Homestead', which was to be auctioned through Dennys Lascelles Limited.2 pages folded white booklet with black text and coloured photos. Biography of William Irwin who migrated to Australia in 1850. He was a digger and a publican during the gold rush in Ballarat. He was publican at the Star Hotel, John O'groats Hotel and the Provincial Hotel. The Star Hotel was closely connected with the story of the Eureka Stockade. The book in part draws from family correspondence. The book's author, Helen Townsend, is Irwin's great-granddaughter. Relevance to the history of Ballarat, gold mining and the Eureka Stockade. The tenant lived at the mercy of the resident landlord. Home was a one-roomed house, a chimney of wicker work plastered over with mud or just a hole in the roof. The walls might consist of mud too, or sods of grass. Any windows, were rarely glazed and would be open to the elements all year round. The Pig, if any, was kept in the house, the most valuable possession. Sold for cash at local market. The main items in the house were a potato pot and water bucket. As well as mother, father and children, there could well be grandparents all living in the same cramped conditions. The family would sleep on rushes or straw lain on the floor. Most tenants were tenants 'at will ', which meant they could be evicted at the 'will' of the landlord. Some had a lease for the life of the father and the eldest son, and this meant they were relatively safe from eviction as long as they could pay their rent. There was a tradition of passing on a portion of your land from father to each of the sons, who would build a small dwelling, and in turn pass a portion onto their own sons. This cycle of subdivision meant that many families were surviving on a tiny plot of land from which to derive a crop of potatoes for the year. Women worked hard in this environment, rearing children, cooking, cleaning, tending to any animals such a pigs or chicken and when needed, helping in the potato field. Life was dictated by the annual rent due to the landlord. Other typical expenses could be the Hearth Tax (actually charged by the number of fire places in a house) Turf, Hay (for any farm animals) and tithes. A tax known as the tithes were calculated at one tenth the value of everything saleable. Tithes were a bitter issue. They were for the support of the Church of Ireland, Protestant Bishops and Ministers, and a cess tax for the construction and maintenance of Protestant Church buildings. The problem being that the vast majority of those paying the Tax were Catholic and paying to support something that was contrary to their beliefs. Potatoes were the staple diet from September through to the end of Spring of the following year. But the summer months were months of hunger and hardship as they waited for the following harvest to come in Autumn. During these months people had to resort to eating anything they could find; turnips, cabbage, even wild grass, nettles, wild berries and dandelions. Those who lived close to the sea would collect seaweed and use it spread on their land as a form of manure. The dependency of so much of the population on the Potato as their sole source of food was to prove disastrous during the Famine years. The house was built c1898 The Rowse family purchased the house and 60 acres when Willie and Jeanie Richardson with their 3 children moved to Brisbane. The Rowse family farmed the 60 acres for 35 years and the house was demolished in 1938. The photograph is from the album of Ivy May Child. According to the National Archives of Australia: 'Land was life for nurseryman Theo Spykers and his ancestors who had tilled the soil for generations; good land to own and to pass on to sons and their sons. At 42 Theo had one and a half acres near Rotterdam for a prosperous nursery, but he could only rent it and his family was growing. So, in 1948, Theo left his wife and six children at their home and set off by himself for Australia. Within a year he had paid a deposit on a broken-down property of 35 acres in the Dandenong ranges. His family joined him and they started to rehabilitate their new property. Mr and Mrs Spykers and twelve of their thirteen children pick chrysanthemums for sale in Melbourne, a city of 1,750,000. The children are; Theo, 20; Gerald, 15; Niko, 8; Frank, 5; Adolf, 22; Corrie, 11; Ria, 18; Terisa, 4; Anthony, 7; Tommy, 2; Elly, 10; Bill, 16.' Mr & Mrs Spykers are each holding one of the smaller children. This farm was on the corner of Birds Rd and Avon Rd, Avonsleigh. On the NAA records, Theodorus Gerardus Spykers arrived in Melbourne on the Muiderkerk on 27th February 1948. He embarked on 16 December 1916 for Europe. He spent time with the Australian Field Artillery (Pack Section). At the end of the war he worked for a year at the A.I.F. Headquarters in London before returning to Australia on the 'Ceramic', arriving in Portsea in 1920. He couldn’t resist wearing it on every occasion. FROM - PREVIOUS PAGE The Emu Creek Bush Band has performed at National Folk Festivals in four states and numerous times at the National Folk Festival in Canberra. They have also been mainstays of the Maldon Folk Festival for most of its history as well as doing dance programs for the Port Fairy Folk Festival on two occasions. Peter wrote and published many books related to traditional music and dance. These include: Three volumes of 'Collector's Choice' which is musical notations for bush dances coupled with much dance history which would have been lost without Peter's efforts, are 'Two Hundred Dancing Years- How to run a Colonial Ball' (Co-authored with Shirley Andrews (AM), 'Music Makes Me Smile- The Music of the Nariel Valley' (Co-authored with Harry Gardner), and his last completed book is titled 'The Merry Country Dance' with over 300 pages.. .. .. Grant. The first edition sold out in only a few weeks. Peter taught old time musicianship, accomplished as he was on the concertina and button accordion, tin whistle, and harmonica, as well as the Swanee whistle, piano and ukulele. In demand for workshops in music and dance at National Folk Festivals in Perth, Alice Springs, Maleny, Melbourne, Adelaide, Kuranda and more recently at several Canberra National Folk Festivals, he was a hit at festivals across the country. As a trained ballroom dancer, with many gold medals to his name, Peter passed on his knowledge every time he trained debutante sets in the Bendigo region. As an early environmentalist, he was a life member of the Bendigo Field Naturalists Club, secretary in the 1970's and actively involved in campaigns to save Lake Pedder and establish the Whipstick and Kamarooka State Parks (now part of the Bendigo National Park). He has discovered and named new plant species in the Whipstick Forest and propagated many Australian plants. Peter took regular guided tours through the Whipstick each spring, on wildflower educational tours. He was a keen and gifted photographer of local plant species. Article reads: Celebrated Bendigo Music identity, historian and naturalist Peter Ellis OAM died suddenly this week after a brief illness. He was 69. Mr Ellis was highly regarded as a collector and preserver of traditional bush music, with his collection of dance related material the largest in the National Library Archives in Canberra. He was award an Order of Australia Medal in 2012 for services to the arts through the collection and preservation of Australian folk history and heritage. Mr Ellis was a founding member of the Emu Creek Bush Band and achieved two platinum and several gold records in his more than 30 years with the Wedderburn Old Timers Band. Fellow Emu Creek Bush Band member and close friend John Williams said Mr Ellis had made an invaluable contribution to the preservation of Australia's musical and dance heritage, travelling extensively across the country recording and notating folk music. 'In 500 year's time, as long as they can find the technology, people will be able to resurrect our bush dancing history,' he said. 'Probably his biggest legacy is the number of young people who have been made aware of bush music and are continuing to play it today and will play it in the future.' As a life member of the Bendigo Field Naturalists Mr Ellis was also involved in campaigns to establish the Whipstick and Kamarooka State Parks and the Saloman's Gully and Jackass Flat Flora Reserves, and lobbied for the inclusion of One Tree Hill in the Greater Bendigo National Park. A public funeral service will beheld at the Mulqueen Family Chapel on Bridge Street on Monday, May 25, at 11am, followed by a private cremation. George Edwin Wells was born in Oxford in 1826. He served an apprenticeship as a coachbuilder and in 1841 he went to New Zealand. He was returning to England in 1848 when he changed his mind in Singapore and turned around and came to Melbourne. He operated a store with Mr W Gibbs and when gold as discovered they left their wives in Melbourne and went to the gold fields of Ballarat in 1851. At this time George was newly married to Catherine Kiely. In 1852 the two men were at the Golden Gully area of the Fryers Creek gold fields, they then move to Bendigo, initially to White Hills before settling in Long Gully. They then brought their patient wives, who had only had visits from their husbands, to Bendigo. George had several successful mining ventures in Bendigo. He died in 1898. One of his sons, Alfred, married Margaret Rotherham in NSW where he was living. Alfred died in 1911 leaving Margaret with a young family. She moved to Bendigo to be nearer to family support. Alfred and Margaret's daughter, Elma Winslade Wells 91904 - 19/1/1988) became a teacher and was posted to Camp Hill Primary School. She was also heavily involved in the Scout movement in the Bendigo area.Blue hardcover scrapbook belonging to the Wells family. (Elma Wells). Inside all the pages are filled with drawing and pictures of people, animals, flowers and landscapes. Also, various poems are transcribed on the pages. Private Charles Field Richardson, 6 Bn., AIF, was the brother of the historian Dorothy Richardson. He enrolled in the AIF on 17 August 1914. Before he enrolled he worked as a mechanic in Harry Cooper’s ‘Kew Flyer’ bicycle shop in Cotham Road. His address is recorded on the Embarkation Rolls as 80 Gladstone Street. He embarked for Europe on the HMAT Hororata on 17 August. The Hororata had been fitted out for 2,000 troops and 124 horses. Charles Richardson was to die of wounds in Egypt on 3 May 1915 at the age of 21 and is buried in Alexandria. Formal and official documents such as these, recording sacrifice in the First World War were socially and spiritually significant to the deceased soldier's close relatives. The home made frame emphasises that the Rogers family valued these documents and wanted them presented visually as a group. The documents have added significance locally as Charles Field Richardson was the brother of the historian Dorothy Rogers. The Collection includes postcards that he sent from Alexandria to his sister and photographs of Pte Richardson in uniform and at the pyramids. He was wounded at Gallipoli and died in hospital in Alexandria.The frame holds three documents, two of which, the signed letters from Buckingham palace are identical.
