This sewing machine, made in Germany in the 19th Century, was used extensively in Tatura Camp 3. Its owner; Mrs Elisabeth Hoffmann, was permitted to bring it with her from Palestine on condition that she would make it available to everyone who wanted to use it. There was a roster system and the machine was in constant use for five years. Because normal dress material was scarce, the internees made clothes out of some of the grey army blankets and burgundy overcoats issued to them. The coats were boiled to remove the burgundy dye, then re-dyed green, navy or black, and converted into various items of clothing. The sewing machine coped well with this heavy use. Belonged to Eliza Dowell nee Clark, who came to Australia 1852. She bought the mortar and pestle with her and mixed concoctions for treating everyday ailments. They gave it to this museum in 2009 on permanent loan. Used during WW2 when internee was married in the church. This trophy was initiated at T.LC. in 1956, donated by Mr H.S. (Tib) Reilly to attract prominent district & Melbourne players to the annual tournament on Australia Day weekend. The conditions were that any player winning the event 3 times would hold the trophy permanently and Mr Reilly undertook to provide a replacement. Mrs Val Constable (nee Huxtable) won the trophy outright for the first time in 1962 and she has donated it to the museum to honour Mr Reilly's contribution to the Tatura community. The bust of Major William Tackaberry was in the possession of the late Mr. Eric Streitbert, a nephew of major Tackaberry. Mr. Streitberg lived with his Aunt, Mrs. Linda Tackaberry and Uncle, William (Bill) Tuckaberry prior to and after WW2. Mr. Streitberg, who died in 1998 at the age of 86, was a member of the 2nd AIF during WW2. He spent 3 1/2 years as a POW on the Thai-Burma railway. Mr. Streitberg gave the bust to his relative, Mr. Stephen Anderson, the Grandson of his cousin the Late Pery Nott, also a nephew of William Tackaberry. It would be appreciated if this information could be kept with the bust of Major Tackaberry and the family association noted. The Australian Service Records of Major Tackaberry during WW1 are also attached. Stephen Anderson donated this to the Tatura Historical Society and PERMISSION FOR THE REMOVAL OF IT FROM THIS SITE WOULD NEED TO BE DISCUSSED with him and his permission granted.
