A series of photographs were taken when heavy snow fell in Sunbury in August 1986. The snow began falling overnight and remained on the ground for 24 hours. The photograph was taken above Reservoir Road on the lower slopes of Mt. Holden. The Sunbury Tip was transferred from the end of Reservoir Road as housing development spread in that area to a site on the NW side of Mt. The photograph shows the extent of Sunbury's development to the west of the town in the early 1980s. The Tullamarine Airport opened in 1970 and replaced Essendon Airport as Melbourne's main airport terminal. The Headland Estate housing development began in the early 1980s. Gellibrand Hill along with the surrounding 3 properties: Attwood, Cumberland and Woodlands were incorporated into Gellibrand Park during the 1980s. The railway land between Horne Street and the railway line was developed for commercial and industrial purposes during the late 1970s and early 1980s. The Sunbury War Memorial is situated on a triangular section of land which was once at the intersection of Barkly and Stawell Streets. The precinct is also the site of the Rupertswood Gun and the Starkey Fountain. Three pop festivals were staged in Sunbury. One in 1972 and a further ones in 1974 and 1975 . The 1972 festival was the most famous and followed on in the Woodstock tradition. The festivals were staged on a property on the banks of the Jacksons Creek, owned by the Duncan family. A crowd of partly clad people sitting or lying on the ground in a wide valley listening to a performance can be seen in the image. The area is litterred with cans, eskies, blankets, sleeping bags and tents. The photograph was taken during the 1972 Sunbury Pop Festival which was staged on a property owned by George Duncan.
