Each was built on part of the land fronting the Kew branch line. In May 1939, the Railway Commissioners agreed to lease a site at the Kew Railway Station for a Baby Health Centre. The single-storey cream brick building was designed by Roland Chipperfield. The Country Roads Board (1913–83), later renamed VicRoads, transferred its headquarters from the Royal Exhibition Building to Kew in 1961, following the completion of two modernist eight-storey office towers in 1960. This dress belonged to Ellen Davis, nee McLaughlin (1870-1956), great-grandmother of Margaret Lake. Ellen was born in County Donegal, Ireland. She married George Washington Davis in 1890 and the couple moved to South Africa, where George owned a bicycle store. During this time, Margaret says, Ellen "had a life of luxury, having servants at her beck and call and even sleeping at the foot of her bed to protect her from any harm". She was a "tiny lady of 5 foot tall" and George "could put his hands around her waist of 18 inches". On coming to Australia they opened a garage and taxi service in Graham Street, Port Melbourne. They lived here until Ellen's death in a road accident in 1956. Ellen gave the dress to her great-granddaughter when Margaret was ten years old. Aged 62, Margaret told BHS, "I have worn it on several occasions, mostly to costume parties and fancy-dress balls when I was younger. I have loved it all this time and displayed it on a dress model in my last home". As she had no granddaughter of her own to leave it to, she decided to donate the dress so that it would continue to be cared for.Sleeveless black silk crepe dress with V-neck and scalloped hem. The "Glenelg" sank off the coast of 90 mile beach after leaving Lakes Entrance with the loss of 37 lives, only three survived. The passengers had embarked on a cruise to the lakes. It was announced on the Evening News when the wreck of the Glenelg was found 100 years later. Veil worn by Margary (Madge) Isabelle Brydon. Was later worn by many (about 15) local ladies who lived in the area of Rushworth. Madge's daughters, Molly and Isobel both wore the veil at their weddings in 1938 and 1945. Donor is granddaughter of bride. Veil made by bride and described in the Waranga Basin newspaper at the time. Margary (Madge) Brydon married Edward (Ward) Sprunt at the bride's family home in Carag Carag, Victoria on 10th April 1912. This compact was owned by Rose Alice Normington, nee Lupton. She was born in Roto, NSW in 1880 and moved to Victoria with her parents and siblings when she was five years old. They settled in Barker's Creek via Castlemaine. In 1899 Rose married Maurice Normington Jnr who also lived in Barker's Creek. They had six daughters and one son. Rose Normington died in 1966. Information provided by Pam Strijder 2017 - granddaughter of Rose Normington. James Young migrated to Australia in 1887 with his daughter Lily, living first at Yarrawonga and then moving to Linton. For reasons that are not known, he changed his surname to Clarke. He ran a small tobacconist and barber's shop in Sussex Street near the Shire offices. (An advertisement for "J Y Clarke, hairdresser & tobacconist" appeared in the first edition of the "Grenville Standard", 12 April 1895.) He died in 1917 and is buried at Linton. His daughter Lily married William Murrell (son of Ambrose and Mary Murrell). Apart from 30 photographs of built structures and places in Kew dating from 1960 and 1961, 145 of his 35mm colour slides chronicle the development of the F19 (later renamed Eastern) Freeway through the Yarra Valley in Kew over a five year period from c.1972 to c.1977. This important collection was donated to the Society by his granddaughter in 2025.This collection of 175 35mm slides is of local and statewide significance, owing to its subject matter, particularly the major development of road transport infrastructure during the 1970s with the construction of the Eastern Freeway. Ron Setford and his wife Grace Setford lived in Tanner Avenue, East Kew, from c.1946 to c.1995. A keen photographer, he recorded the changing face of Kew over a 20 year period.
