After the 1939 bushfires, the Forests Commission Victoria invested heavily in a radically new communications network. After suffering some inevitable delays due to the war, radio VL3AA switched into full operation in October 1945 proudly beaming out 200 watts across the State. But by today’s standards, the technology was primitive and the reception poor unless the user was on a high point somewhere. The radio signal was "line-of-sight" and bounced between fire towers and relay transmitters across the mountains back to the District offices. The advent of solid-state electronics in the 1960s replaced the more delicate valve sets which enabled greater use of vehicle mounted radios. The Commission continued to research, develop and build new radios at its many workshops around Victoria. The network was supported by a large team of skilled radio technicians. The more secure and versatile State Mobile Radio (SMR) digital trunk system came into operation in about 1995. Upgraded Tait Radios were purchased in 2014 after recommendations of the 2009 Bushfires Royal Commission. But it was the convergence of separate technologies such as 5G mobile phones, high-capacity and light-weight lithium batteries, Wi-Fi, the ever-expanding internet, cloud data storage, digital cameras, GPS, personal organisers and hundreds of supporting Apps into powerful smartphones and tablets which revolutionised bushfire communications from the mid-2000s. He tried unsuccessfully on two occasions to be elected to the Federal Parliament as a representative of the Communist party. Hardy died in North Carlton, Melbourne in 1994 aged 76. This work is a collection of critical essays about Hardy's work and life by several different writers and critics. The Logic Analyser was purchased by the Ballarat College of Advanced Education Physics Department in the early 1980s. At the time it was a state of the art piece of test equipment used for fault finding and programming diagnostics for 8 bit computers. It was later used by the Electrical Engineers, after Physics merged with Engineering in the mid 1990s. The device monitored the 16 bit Address buss and 8 bit Data buss of an 8 bit computer. This device continually samples the 24 bits simultaneously and looks for a preset pattern. When the pattern is matched the logic analyser continues for a set number of steps thus allowing an operator to examine the data and address information both leading up to and after an event. This was particularly useful for diagnosing unusual programming and hardware errors. Logic analyzers are used in debugging and troubleshooting in mini- and microcomputers. The HP analyzers collect information through 24 (1615A) or 32 (1610B) inputs leads, connected to the computer's address, data and/or control lines. The logic state flow is shown on a display in a number of traces, a single data line or an appropriate combination of data lines providing a trigger signal. When the Commonwealth Post and Telegraph Act was passed in June 1902, and a national Postmaster General's Department (the PMG) was established the responsibility for the nation's mail and telephone services fell on local Post Offices. The Bendigo Post Office, built in 1887 and is situated on Pall Mall, it was the central distribution centre for receiving and delivering communication and postal services until 1997 and is now the Bendigo Visitor Centre. Clocks such as these were issued by the Post Master General's Department which was a department of the Australian federal government, established at Federation in 1901, whose responsibilities included the provision of postal and telegraphic services throughout Australia. It was abolished in December 1975 and replaced by the Postal and Telecommunications Department.Wall clock with ceramic face consisting of twelve Roman numerals with hand and minute hand. Clock has a wooden body with glass viewing panel in centre and brass internal mechanism and pendulum. The clock is fitted into a wooden display case and held in place by wooden pegs. The lower case has a small drawer which opens and holds the winding key. PMG on ceramic face centre upper. '146' and 'PMG' stamped into wooden clock frame below the number six. The brass wall clock retains its key. It was provided by the Department of Shipping and Transport in about 1900 and is original to the lightstation. It was mounted in the watchroom, a small extension at the front of the lighthouse (later radar station), where lightkeepers completed many of their reports and recorded radio schedules, weather observations, distress calls and other data. Good, reliable clocks were also essential for maintaining a strict roster of hours for winding the clockwork mechanism that kept the lens active. The name of the clock’s manufacturer has not been determined. More specifically it was used for logging radio schedules that were made at five minutes to midday, everyday, and for recording the times of weather observations, distress and any other calls that came in. AMSA notes that ‘Lightkeepers who used this clock were said to have polished and wound it every week while it was in use until the 1990s when its otherwise impeccable time keeping mechanisms finally became inaccurate’.The brass clock at Wilsons Promontory illustrates the importance of timekeeping in a nineteenth century lighthouse. Despite its slightly chipped face, the timepiece has first level contributory significance for its historic association with the watch room and confirmed provenance.
