Preston Market, Saturday late is part of a series of paintings and sketches that were included in Mary Hammond’s solo exhibition, Coming and Going, held at Bundoora Homestead Art Centre in 2010. The exhibition, a major retrospective of Hammond’s work from the mid-1970s-2009, focussed on her everyday depiction of people in Northcote and Preston, particularly along High Street, Northcote where she had a studio for a few years, and the Preston Market, primarily during the 1980s and 1990s.

Framed, limited edition lithograph. Originally produced to be bound in a book by private press publisher Tate Adams. The suite of lithographs for the book was started by John Brack in September 1981 and finished and published in December 1982. The book was launched with a series of original conte drawings, from which the lithographs were based, in Realities Galleries, Melbourne. As such a high cost of production was involved in the binding of the book, only fifteen copies were originally bound for exhibition and sale at the show. Subsequent to this approximately another thirty copies were bound, making a total finished edition of fewer than fifty copies, far less than the anticipated 200. A number of the 50 hors commerce editions have been sold as individual plates through auctions and galleries. This photograph was taken at the Mission to Seafarers, Melbourne. Frank Leslie Oliver served as chaplain at the Mission to Seafarers Melbourne for 30 years from 1930 - 1960. He is in this photograph, second from the left.Frank Leslie Oliver served as chaplain at the Mission to Seafarers Melbourne for 30 years from 1930 - 1960, including time served as chaplain with the Royal Australia Navy aboard HMAS Australia. John Lundy-Clarke grew up in the Kalorama/Mt Dandenong area and later in life (1972-74) began to write a comprehensive history of the area working from an original settlement map in an effort to cover all areas. It was in the clearing on the left that John William (Willie) Richardson built a home for his wife Jeanie Green. It was called Mount Calvin. Jeanie was often ill and the family left the area seeking a warmer climate. They eventually settled in Brisbane. Willie sold the home and 60 acres around it to W. Rowse. Jeanie died in 1916. Photograph was taken at the Mission to Seafarers Melbourne. It is historically significant as it marks a royal visit made by the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester during the Duke of Gloucester's term as 11th Governor General of Australia (1945 - 1947). Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester, GCB, CI, GCVO, GCStJ, GBE (born Lady Alice Christabel Montagu Douglas Scott; 25 December 1901 – 29 October 2004) was the wife of Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester, the third son of King George V and Queen Mary. Frank Oliver was MTS chaplain during this period. The Gloucesters did not return to Australia on any official visit until 1965. (see ADB entry for Duke of Gloucester) According to the list of engagements from the Argus, on Saturday the Duke and Duchess left Governor House to visit the Central Institute at 11am where they were received by the Governor and Lady Dugan, the chaplain (Padre Oliver) and members of the committee. They left at 11.15am : the legend of the picture "AS THE DUCHESS LEFT THE MISSION TO SEAMEN Central Institute on Saturday morning, Padre Frank Oliver, chaplain, called for three cheers, which were given heartily."This photograph reveals the contemporaneous relationship between Australians and the British Royal family and connection through the International organisation that is the Mission to Seafarers. This automotive circular saw was designed to allow trees to be sawn into planks at the site they were felled, rather than requiring them to be carted to a lumber mill first. It was invented by Robert John (Bob) Pyle in 1936 and patented in 1937 (serial number 101975). This picture depicts Clarrie Howell (left) and Bob Pyle (right), standing with the sawbench between them. What was special about Bob’s new invention was that it not only allowed a circular saw to be portable and set up at a logging site, but that it allowed the circular saw to be run using the car motor, and that the saw could be detached, allowing the car to be used for carting or other purposes. This photograph is significant because it shows an early instance of an emerging technology, portable sawmills, and is evidence to the innovations that the people of Beechworth have achieved throughout history, as well Black and White rectangular photograph printed on matte photographic paper. This coat was owned and worn by Lieutenant T L(known as Leigh) Simpson D.F.C. who joined the Royal Flying Corps during Workd War 1. He was born in Hamilton Victoria and had an interest through his family in flying, before the war. In 1916 he transferred from the Light Horse Field Ambulance to the 68th Australian Sqd. Royal Flying Corps. He was promoted to lieutenant of the 3rd Squadron. During the war he was a pilot and photographer and took hundreds of reconnaissance photos over occupied territory. He was involved in photographing enemy positions and supplying information to the artillery batteries which then shelled those positions. He was involved in a number of missions involving direct contact with the enemy including Baron von Richtofen and was involved in the "dog fight" which led to von Richtofen's death. In May 1918 he had been promoted to Flight Commander and temporary Captain when his cousin Captain Duigan was wounded. He represented Australia at von Richtofen's funeral and presented the Australian wreath. Following his discharge after being seriously wounded, he returned home and became a grazier in the Dunkeld area. He maintained his interest in aviation throughout his life with a strong connection with Reg Ansett and was a director of Ansett Airways Pty Ltd for many years.
