Sent to a parishioner at Christ Church Mitcham, by Phyllis Grant who lived at the Migrant Hostel in Mitcham in 1952-54, where her husband did development work under the P.M.G.Black and white photograph of road signs in Rooks Road. Note spelling of Rookes which is incorrect and Henry Street which no longer exists. Born in the U.K. and migrated to Australia aged 32. Married Sarah Lewis 6 years before leaving London. They lost their first 3 children and had 2 living sons. Henry, the eldest became a shire councillor. Henry William bought land in Church Road and started an orchard, prospered and later bought land in Williamson's Road on which 6 generations lived over 122 years. Sarah died and he married Harriet Tainton and they had 4 more children. Around 1940-42 the clockwork mechanism was wound by hand for payment of 2/6 (25 cents) per week, payable half yearly. The clock tower was removed and re-erected in 2000 at the intersection of Maroondah Highway and Wantirna Road, with a new electric winding mechanism.The story of the Ringwood Memorial Clock Tower erected 1928 at a cost of approx $1700 and unveiled 4-Aug-1928 at the intersection of Maroondah Highway and Warrandyte Road. The design for the Memorial plaque was chosen from 800 entries in 1918. Mr E.C.Preston of Liverpool was the winner. The prize was 200 pounds. The plaque was to be, As a solace for bereavement and as a memento. The first plaques arrived in Australia during 1922. They were to become commonly known as the Death penny or the Dead mans penny. Francis Charles Wicks, No 2246 enlisted in 14th Reinforcements 28th Batt AIF on 24.7.15 age 33 years 10 months. Embarked for Eygpt 1.10.15, embarked for France 16.3.16, was reported Missing in Action on 29.7.1916 and was then reported Killed in Action the same day in France, confirmed by Court of Inquiry 4.1.17. Refer 2059, his brother James Henry Wicks Regt No 4626.Circular cast bronze plaque with raised relief of Britannia and a lion with two small seals. Around the outside in raised relief is the wording typical to all plaques.
