Group of men standing outside George Knapman’s forge on Election Day (4 June 1907) for the Legislative Council. Voting was conducted in the Eltham Courthouse next door, to the right of photo. At that time women did not have the right to vote. At the far left can be see William B. Andrew’s Corn Store on the corner of Franklin Street. The collection of over 500 images is held in partnership between Eltham District Historical Society and Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library) and is now formally known as the 'The Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection.' It is significant in being the first community sourced collection representing the places and people of the Shire's first one hundred years. The Reynolds family were early settlers in Research. The Reynolds/ Prior collection of photographs were taken by Tom Prior, the maternal uncle of Ivy Reynolds, around 1900 and the 60 photos in the album give a fine overview of many of the landmarks of Research and Eltham over 100 years ago. lvy lived in the family home for many years at 106 Thompson Cres Research. Ivy's father, Ernst Richard Reynolds and grandfather, Richard Reynolds, lived at the same address. Ivy's father Richard worked for Mr. Trail on his property in Research. Reynolds Road is named after the family. Mr Tom Prior (wife Eva) worked at the Melbourne zoo. He was very innovative and made his own camera, using the black cloth hood to exclude the light. Helen McKay was a foundation member of the Eureka Stockade Progress Association, and later a life member. The Eureka Stockade Memorial Park comprised a monument to those killed in the Battle of Eureka in 3 December 1854, gardens, swimming pool, waterlily pond, hall and memorial gates. The view is looking southeast from near Eltham Road (present-day Sherbourne Road) across Bolton and Bridge streets towards the village of Little Eltham running down the main road (Maria Street) . On the immediate right is Mrs Mary Jane Smart's family home located on the north side of Bridge Street at the intersection with Bolton Street, facing Bolton Street (now part of present day Brisbane Street and occupied by the Kitchen Design Centre). An original early settler's cottage, it was built by Mary Jane Smart's parents, Edwin Bailey and Jane (nee Matthews). Mary Jane Smart was born in the cottage. She married an Englishman, Alexander Wilson Smart who disappeared to Western Australia in the early 1900s in search of gold. He ultimately married again in W.A., committing bigamy and then committed murder and was hung in 1911. Marion Anne McKellar, the daughter of William Gilbert McKellar and Maria Jones was born in 1838. She married Henry Henty in 1859 and they had 9 children. She died in June 1919. Henry Henty and his wife Marion had ‘Tarring’, Kew built for their family in 1872. The Henty family resided at ‘Tarring’ until the death of Marion Henty in 1919. ‘Tarring’ was then sold to Ruyton Girls’ School, and the School moved to the site, (now 12 Selbourne Rd, Kew) in 1920. ‘Tarring’ was renamed ‘Henty House’ in honour of its original owners. Alonzo was the nephew of William and Elizabeth Box who settled in Moorabbin Parish in 1865 and developed a market garden and raised their family . On the Marriage Certificate Mary Box has spelt her Maiden name "Closter" with a "C" and not the " K" of her German heritage. Albert and Maria Kloster nee Bolch, were German immigrant Gardeners and Mary was born in Mount Waverley ,Victoria 1889. This marriage was taking place during World War 1 when many immigrants would have altered the spelling of their name.Alonzo Box, who lived in Oakleigh, was the nephew of William and Elizabeth Box, pioneer market gardeners who resided in 'Box Cottage' 1865 -1914 His occupation is stated as "Pitcher Setter' i.e one who laid pavers, (Pavior), or blue-stone pitchers. It would have been a specialised work requiring skills much the same as a brick layer. In a developing Shire this would have been a very necessary job used in gutter laying, drainage works etc.. A photo of a family of Junior Legatees in 1961. Legacy provided outings, camps and holidays for children all over Victoria. Country children would stay for two weeks in the city (often at the Legacy residences) and city children were billeted with families around Victoria. The names that accompanied this photo were: The Picone family from North Albury 1961. L-R Cheryl 14, Jenny 11, Antony 10, Leslie and Maria 9 and Alan 7. The Museum, at 44 Walmer Street, Kew, is now a cultural institution committed to the collection, study and display of 19th century interior decorative finishes, and the components of 19th and 20th century interior decoration. This is one of a number of historically and aesthetically significant photos of the interiors and exterior of Villa Alba when it was still owned by the Mount Royal Hospital, showing twentieth century accretions and deterioration of the historic fabric of the building. This was a benchmark survey against which future conservation and restoration activities can be measured.In December 1987, Mockridge Stahle & Mitchell Pty Ltd Architects prepared ‘Villa Alba Survey: A Report on the fabric for Mount Royal Hospital’ of which this photograph is a part. From 1950, the house was owned by a number of institutions. By 1984, the Villa Alba Preservation Society had been formed, and three years later, the Mount Royal Hospital granted a 25-year lease to Kew Council. In 2004, the title to Villa Alba was passed by the Victorian Government to The Villa Alba Museum Incorporated. The Museum, at 44 Walmer Street, Kew, is now a cultural institution committed to the collection, study and display of 19th century interior decorative finishes, and the components of 19th and 20th century interior decoration.This is one of a number of historically and aesthetically significant photos of the interiors and exterior of Villa Alba when it was still owned by the Mount Royal Hospital, showing twentieth century accretions and deterioration of the historic fabric of the building.
