The Club was located behind the Kew Recreation Hall at 12-16 Wellington Street, Kew. The file contains both primary and secondary sources. Primary sources include twelve annual reports (1984-85 to 1988-89; 1990-1 to 1996-97); sundry copies of the Club’s newsletter - ‘Kew View’ from the period 1980-95; magazines celebrating the inaugural and second annual ‘Kew Cup’ (1992-93); ephemera such as the programs for the Centenary Dinner (1980); the Club’s Constitution (1987); and research notes and newspaper articles/clippings. The file also includes two copies of the Club’s history. A number of documents relate to the proposed sale of the land by Boroondara Council in 2001. In 2020, KHS accepted into its collection the entire collection and archives of the Kew Bowling Club. Various partiesReference, Research, InformationKHS OrderIn 1960, the City of Kew celebrated its centenary. It had been constituted a separate municipality in 1860 following its separation from the Kew Roads Board. The Kew Historical Society had been founded in 1958 to assist in the celebration of the anniversary. The Society’s main contribution was to author a 24-page booklet on Kew’s history. The Information file contains a copy of the book and a later separate index of its contents. Various copies of the book record their donor’s names - Margaret Bertuch (2005), Mr Keith Hobson (2007), Betty Huston. The file also contains a detailed three-page signed manuscript/typescript by Dorothy Rogers, noting her ‘Impressions of Functions During the Centenary, Kew, 13th to 18th December 1961’. The commentary lists all formal events during this period, including performances. The photographs were gifted to the Kew Historical Society in 2018 by Rosemary Barnes. The photos had been in the possession of her former husband, Dr Fred Stamp, the last medical superintendent of the hospital. In 2019, the photographs were transferred to the State Archives as Permanent Government Records, as the Society is only entitled as a Class-B Place of Deposit to hold Temporary Government Records. The Society was permitted to keep and publish a digital copy of each photograph. Many of the photographs include information on the reverse about individuals or locations. Where this is the case, these have been published here as images that can be viewed in the picture carousel. Permission for third parties to reproduce this record must be granted by the Public Record Office Victoria.One of a series of photographs of the centenary celebrations at the Willsmere Mental Hospital in 1972. The Victorian Mounted Rifles was raised as the mounted arm of the Victorian Colonial defence force in 1885. It was under the command of Colonel Thomas Caradoc Rose (Tom) Price (1842-1911). Price was born in Tasmania, educated in Hobart Town and at Scotch College, Melbourne, before entering the East India Military College, Addiscombe, England. He was commissioned on 7 July 1861 in the Madras Infantry and began twenty years’ service in India with several regiments, retiring in April 1883. On his return to Victoria he was tasked with raising of a force of one thousand, to be known as the Victorian Mounted Rifles, and appointed a lieutenant-colonel in the Permanent Military Forces. Companies of the Victorian Mounted Rifles were raised in rural districts throughout Victoria. The soldiers were paid a small annual allowance and were required to provide their own horse. Many members served in contingent to the Boer War. After Federation the VMR was gathered up into the Australian Light Horse.
