John Millington Synge's plays were produced by the Irish National Theatre Society in 1905. Program notes reveal that the first performances "were the focus of some of the bitterest scenes ever witnessed in a theatre. Audience unrest ... grew to full-scale riots, and Yeats claimed that by the end of the week's run 70 police were keeping order inside the theatre, while 500 patrolled the streets outside".Unruly gatherings have been witnessed in the Athenaeum Theatre and Collins Street, such as in 1843, a year after the building was completed: "The first election for the Melbourne seat in 1843 turned into a sectarian battle between a Catholic and a Presbyterian candidate." Supporters of the losing candidate "massed outside the Mechanics Institution where the official declaration of the poll was to occur, and tried to storm the building. Classes began in temporary classrooms a year earlier and students reflected on the hive of activity while buildings went up around them in the 1978 yearbook, Literata: 'We still had to put up with the noise of the builders finishing the building' D.W 'There was hardly anything to be taught in...I thought it was disorganised, lonely and hectic' K.H. 'I do not know how the workers completed the school in such a short time' A. DiM. In a longer piece, past student and school captain, Fiona Kellett, wrote: 'Where once there were just paddocks, we now have a fine school, of which we are very proud. Kurting. Mechanics' Hall OFFICIAL OPENING. SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION. Favored by beautiful weather, the official opening ot the new Mechanics' Hall erected at Kurting proved an entire success. There was a large attendance ol local and district residents, and a sports meeting held during the afternoon in aid of Red Cross funds resulted in a substantial amount being netted. The hall, which stands on ground generously donated by Mr J. Hogan, between the school and the creek, is a substantialyvconcrete building of pleasing design, and was erected at a cost of about £330 by Mr J. H. Secombe, who also materially assisted the committee in the matter of finance. It is 48ft. long by 24ft. wide, with 12ft, walls, and should prove equal to the needs of the district for many years to come. It is well ventilated, and has large windows, these opening outwards on hinges. Doors at each side, and the back, as well as in front, give free means of access, while a fireplace in the back allows of provision being made for supper arrangements, water being laid on from a tank. Provi sion has been made for the partitioning off ot portion of the hall at any time this may be considered desirable. To provide a stage eight tables of a uniform size have been constructed to fit across the width of the hall. By these it will be possible, when euchre parties are being held, to use the full length of the hall. ... (Inglewod Advertiser, 19 July 1918) and also to convert tiie "stage" into card tables. The committee still has work ahead in the provision of a ceiling for the building and seating accomodation, but there is no doubt that the public support accorded them will be sufficient to enable these matters to be dealt with in the near future. International House at the University of Melbourne was Australia's first 'international house'. Its first purpose-built accommodation wing opened to residents in 1957, with the official opening the following year. The building was later named the Ian Clunies Ross Wing in honour of the first chair of the International House Council. buildings

The Samuel Wadham Wing was the second purpose-built accommodation building at International House at the University of Melbourne. The building was officially opened by Lord Richard Casey (1890–1976) on 23 March 1963.

The International House Squash Court was officially opened on July 16, 1969, by the Governor of Victoria, Sir Rohan Delacombe. The court was funded by the Sunshine Foundation and Dame Hilda Stevenson. Squash became popular with students, but the court was eventually demolished in 2002 to make way for the Founders Building. The Samuel Wadham Wing, officially opened on 23 March 1963 by Lord Richard Casey (Minister for External Affairs), at a large ceremony and commemoration dinner. The Wing was the second residential building at International House, providing sixty-three additional student rooms, tutors' rooms, a library, a laundry, a gym, and the formal entrance. The new building was hoped by Warden Sam Dimmick to secure International House's position as an academic college in Melbourne, who also extended thanks for fundraising and furnishing initiatives by the Women's Auxiliaries.samuel wadham, events

Lord Richard Casey opened the Samuel Wadham Wing on Saturday, 23 March 1963, to a crowd of students and distinguished guests. In his speech, Lord Casey deemed the new building a "microcosm of the world", with students able to "help break down misunderstanding and social barriers" between Australia and its neighbours. Cyril Leyshon White was an official war artist during the Gallipoli Campaign in WWI. He contributed a number of his sketches for “The ANZAC Book".
