Churchill Island Heritage Farm
Furniture - Sea Chest, c. 1850s
The Rogers Family lived in Truro (Cornwall), and John Rogers followed his brother to Australia in 1838, at the age of 17. He boarded the Florentia, bringing with him only this sea chest, and after arriving in Sydney John travelled to Victoria where he went to the goldfields. He married Sarah in 1862 when he was 46, and she was 28, and from 1866 to 1872 they lived on Churchill Island, building two cottages which stand to this day. This object is intrinsic to the history of Churchill Island Heritage Farm, as it was the only object that John Rogers - one of the first inhabitants of the Island - brought with him from the United Kingdom. The sea chest is demonstrative of his personal journey as well as a broader pattern of immigration and settlement that occurred throughout Australia in the early nineteenth century. John's travels from Sydney to Victoria, onto the goldfields, and then settling onto Churchill Island - claiming possession of it through 'squatter's rights' - is one that is fundamental to the understanding of the formation of the Island and the development of its modern identity. The chest is now part of the collection of the Churchill Island Heritage Farm and sits on the island’s first building; a cottage Rogers has built himself. It has been part of all Rogers life story and has stayed with the family, passed on to generations until Rogers’s great granddaughter, Helen Sykes, donated it to the museum in 2012. Australian Gliding Museum
Machine - Glider – Sailplane, 1949
The Hutter H17 is a small single seat glider with a wing span of 9.69 metres, designed in 1934 by Wolfgang Hutter, for flying in the Austrian Alps. Construction of the museum’s example, “Sweetwings” (now registered as VH-GQM), commenced in Perth in 1949. It is one of two Hutter H17 gliders built in Western Australia by N.J. Wynne and A.G. Milligan at the time – the other “Fleetwings” (formerly VH-HDQ and since re-registered as VH-GXV) is located at Millicent, South Australia. Ownership transferred to G.R. Reichelt of Tocumwal New South Wales and later to D.B. Hunt of Thornbury in Melbourne and later Mt Isa, Queensland. It was acquired by Bill Riley of Tocumwal who donated it to the Museum. The glider was last flown on 25 October 1979 at Tocumwal. This exhibit is an example of a 1930s small wood and fabric glider that was designed in Austria for hill soaring. It is a simple design that became a popular choice for home building in the post war years in Australia when gliding as a sport was in recovery. Some examples are still flying.Small single seat glider. Fuselage and wing struts are painted yellow. Wings, rudder and tailplane / elevator are primed with pink dope. It has an open cockpit with small clear Perspex wind screen. Instruments include airspeed indicator and altimeter tucked neatly under front edge of the cockpit rim.australian gliding, glider, sailplane, hutter, sweetwings, fleetwings, reichelt, riley, wynne, milligan -

Ithacan Historical Society
Photograph, Classic Restaurant, Swanston Street, c 1970s
The Classic Restaurant, located in Swanson Street next to Young and Jacksons Hotel, was one of the many businesses owned by Ithacans in Melbourne's CBD. Nakis Raftopoulos ran the business during the 70 & 80s up until the property was sold and became a fast food chain outlet. The building has since been demolished as part of Melbourne's Metro Tunnel project. Many Ithacans who settled in Melbourne in the early years of the twentieth century opened restaurants In the CBD. From the 1950s onwards the number of these Ithacan owned businesses gradually declined and by the 1970s very few remained. The Classic Restaurant was one of the last remaining establishments in the CBD owned and operated by an Ithacan. A black and white photograph of the Classic Restaurant.
