The City of Melbourne issued a License or Licence for Melbourne Tramway and Omnibus Co (MTOCo) drivers (gripmen) or conductors under their Hackney Carriage by-law No. 110. The cost was 5/- or five schillings. This practice ceased during 1917. 1 - License No. 179, was issued to George A Barrett of Port Melbourne who was a tram conductor on the 16/1/1914. Demonstrates how the SEC used enameled signs to convey instructions to passengers and confirm the advice of the conductor.,An enameled sign with black lettering and border on an off-white background. Lettering reads, "Passengers are requested to provide themselves with correct amount of Fare." Rust markings show on the face where the enamel has chipped. Two holes have been drilled in the sides to attach sign to the tram cab. Sign reads "Passengers are requested to present the correct amount of Fare." Two holes on the left and right hand sides have been made to attach the sign to the tram cab. There are rust marks permeating the enamel on the front. And paint has been used on the RH side to cover chipped enamel. The reverse has been coated in black enamel, with rust marks showing where the enamel was placed on a frame prior to firing, and where the enamel has chipped away from the outer edge.tramways sign, enameled tramway signage -

Gives details of rosters arrangements for crews and shows how the roster system worked at the time.3419.1 - Single sheet of off white duplicating paper titled "Motorman/Conductors' Rotation Roster", dated July 1946. Printed by wax cut stencil or Gestetner method. Details the run number that an employee would do for a particular week and day of the week. Has dated of "July 1946" and initials "M.M." in top right hand corner. 3419.2 - ditto, but for Conductors. Runs end in letter C. See also Reg. Frank Wright was a renown resident of Smeaton, where he was born. He lived at Laura Villa, and attended Smeaton State School. His father William was a gold miner and his mother's name was Sarah. Their family won many singing and instrumental awards. Frank was tutored by Percy Code and was awarded a gold medal for the highest marks in the ALCM examinations in the British Colonies at the age of seventeen years. He became the Australian Open Cornet Champion by the age of eighteen. A year later, Frank conducted the City of Ballarat Band, and later the Ballarat Soldiers’ Memorial Band. He formed the Frank Wright Frisco Band and Frank Wright and his Coliseum Orchestra. These bands won many South Street awards, and Frank as conductor won many awards in the Australian Band Championship contest. In 1933 Frank Wright sailed to England to conduct the famous St Hilda’s Band and was appointed in 1934 as the Musical Director of the London County Council (the GLC or Greater London Council), where he organized many amazing concerts in most of the 150 parks, in and around the London district. He was also responsible for some of London’s major concerts at Kenwood, the Crystal Palace and Holland Park. He was made Professor of Brass and Military Band Scoring and Conducting and was a Fellow of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Frank was often invited to adjudicate Brass Band Championships around Europe, in Australia, including South Street and in New Zealand. Frank was awarded an M.B.E. in 1967. The Frank Wright Medal at the Royal South Street competition is awarded to an individual recognized as making an outstanding contribution to brass music in Australia.A single printed black on white page detailing a London County Council, open air, 'Massed Band' concert held on 12th July 1953.
