Olympic Notebook - or Memo book, 128 pages, 4 sections, sewn within a cloth bound colour card cover. Note book, handwritten details the work carried out on MMTB trams between June 1974 and October 1975 at various depots. Proves the car number, depot, date, brief description of work. Entries have been individually crossed out, perhaps as a form written report completed. No details of the person who undertook the work. May Coles (1915 - 2007) worked for more than 25 years at the exclusive Georges store in Collins St. May lived nearby the West Preston tram terminus and caught the tram to work. The work was commissioned by May to recall those special years of her work at Georges. This altar cloth represents ecclesiastical linen used in the early to mid-20th century. It is used on the altar in the Chapel of St Nicholas Seamen's Church at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and Village. The Missions to Seamen organisation The Missions to Seamen is an Anglican (Church of England) charity that has been serving the world's seafarers since 1856. It was inspired by the work of Rev. John Ashley, who, 20 years earlier, had pioneered a ministry to seafarers in the Bristol Channel in Great Britain. When Ashley retired because of ill health, others determined that the work should continue, and they founded the Missions to Seamen. It adopted as its symbol a Flying Angel, inspired by a verse from Revelation 14 in the Bible. Today, there are over 200 ports worldwide where the Missions to Seamen has centres and chaplains. A Missions to Seamen’s Club offers a warm welcome to sailors of all colours, creeds and races. A sailor can watch television, have a drink and a chat, change money or buy goods from the club shop or worship in the Chapel. In Victoria, the Missions to Seamen still has clubs in Melbourne, Portland and Geelong. This academic bonnet belonged to Dr Mary Burnell. Mary Taylor Burnell was born on 21 February 1907, in Norwood, South Australia. She graduated with her MBBS in 1931. In 1932, Burnell served as a resident medical officer at Adelaide Children’s Hospital. By 1934 she was their Honorary Anaesthetist. It was also during this period that Burnell became the first female member of the Australian Society of Anaesthetists. One year later, in 1935, she worked as Secretary for the South Australian Section of the Society. Although resigning from her position at the Children’s Hospital in 1937, Burnell returned in 1942. The outbreak of World War II meant hospital staff and resources were drained. During her work, Burnell lobbied for a Department of Anaesthetics in the Children’s Hospital. Through working at both hospitals, she became aware of the great differences between administering anaesthesia to children and administering it to adults. In 1953 she was elected President of the Australian Society of Anaesthetists. She was the first female to be elected to this position. Two years later in 1955, Burnell was elected as a member of the Board of Faculty of Anaesthetists, Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. In 1966 she was elected Dean of the Faculty of Anaesthetists. Again, she was the first female to be elected to this position. Burnell worked tirelessly to promote the importance of anaesthetics in Australia. Burnell’s contributions to anaesthetics were recognised with Honorary Fellowships to both the Australian Faculty of Anaesthetists and Royal College of Surgeons. This item was given to Captain John E D White, of the AATTV, by the Chief of the Rhade/Rade tribe, whose wife had woven it. The chief was John's recruitment officer in 1968. During the Vietnam War, the Rhade would be "recruited" from their villages to work with various units such as the MIKE force led by Captain White. As well as fighting-power, they were valuable for their understanding of the local environment. Like all Montagnards serving in the war, translation was also a vitally important skill they provided.Long piece of coarsely woven fabric with patterned braid and fringing at each end.
