In 1991 the 'Red Berets' landed at Sandown Racecourse on behalf of Legacy. In recognition of the support of the VATC President Sullivan presented a plaque to VATC Acting chairman Mr Geoff Bellmaine at a Tuesday luncheon. VATC is the Victorian Amateur Racing Club. Since 1932 Nutbrown has been producing crafted kitchen products which were a staple in British homes. Nutbrown continues to be in production today.A vintage manual metal and plastic Chipper and French Fry Cutter with two blue turned wooden handles each side which are attached to folding crossed metal supports joined to a square frame. The frame has 36 small squares with sharp blades on the edges to cut the potatoes A yellow coloured plastic support with raised squares under the cutter holds the potato in place. This is screwed to the metal base. Photos of an RSL Conference where Legacy had a stall of photos explaining their work. The yellow paper captions name a Legatee standing with Legatee Sullivan as being Barry Durkin. Also a photo of Betty C Lawson MBE, Florence Nightingale Medal, FCNA, MID, attending the conference who noticed the book 'We are here, too' in which she has written the foreward. The letters and diaries of Sister Olive Haynes, a nursing sister in WW1 provide a unique look at life at the front. Her son became a Legatee, David Dooley as her married name was Olive Dooley. The date is unknown but probably 1991 the year John Sullivan was president. Photos were in a scrapbook of photos spanning 1983 to 1991.A record that Legacy had a presence at an RSL Conference. The Australaisn Bittern is a partly nocturnal bird who resides in costal and sub-coastal locations in south-west mainland Australia, south east Australia and Tasmania. They can be found in wetlands, swamps and among reeds. These birds are mostly brown and yellow in colour and with short legs and a stocky body. The "woomph" sound made by the Bittern late at night is thought to have been the origin of the traditional Aboriginal myth of the Bunyip. The Bunyip, like the Australasian Bittern, was believed to reside in reedy swamps. This specimen is part of a collection of almost 200 animal specimens that were originally acquired as skins from various institutions across Australia, including the Australian Museum and the National Museum of Victoria, as well as individuals such amateur anthropologist Reynell Eveleigh Johns between 1860-1880. These skins were then mounted by members of the Burke Museum Committee and put-on display in the formal space of the Museum’s original exhibition hall where they continue to be on display. This display of taxidermy mounts initially served to instruct visitors to the Burke Museum of the natural world around them, today it serves as an insight into the collecting habits of the 19th century. This specimen is part of a significant and rare taxidermy mount collection in the Burke Museum. This collection is scientifically and culturally important for reminding us of how science continues to shape our understanding of the modern world. They demonstrate a capacity to hold evidence of how Australia’s fauna history existed in the past and are potentially important for future environmental research. This collection continues to be on display in the Museum and has become a key part to interpreting the collecting habits of the 19th century.The Australaisn Bittern is a stocky bird with mainly yellow and brown colouring. This colouring makes the bird difficult to see in the dense, reedy vegetation it resides amongst in shallow freshwater wetlands. When threatened, the Australaisn Bittern will raise its bill skyward in a pose which helps it camouflage. This specimen has streaked yellow-brown feathers, a yellow bill and legs which are a yellow-green colour. The photographic developers were used to develop plates, films and lantern slides. They had to be mixed as per instructions on the bottles and boxes. These boots were manufactured by Oliver Stevens in Ballarat to the Forests Commission's own specification. Safety boots were a bit "hit and miss" back in 1981. As well as the steel toe caps these boots had a screwed, glued and stitched Sherpa-pattern rubber nitrile sole. The sole was oil resistant and didn't melt on hot coals. The yellow heels signified safety boots. There were two styles with different leather and staff were all personally fitted and given their choice of style. The only thing that has fundamentally changed over 40 years is there is much more choice and comfort in boots today. These boots proved to be the catalyst for boot manufacturers realising there was a market outside of the armed forces not being served. Ankle injuries along with elastic sided boots were virtually eliminated by these boots. The iconic Tasmanian company, Blundstone, had a work boot called "Forester" at the time. It had won an Australian Design Award and had a bonded Sherpa sole. Unfortunately, the soles tended to separate from the boot under field test conditions. Eventually they perfected the process Oliver Stevens' main issue was not being able to recruit enough workers to meet the increased demand. The Yellow-billed Spoonbill is a waterbird which can be commonly seen wading through shallow waters. This particular variety of Spoonbill is found across Australia, mostly in the northern and well-watered inland areas. It resides in freshwater wetlands, dams, lagoons and swamps. The species feeds on mainly aquatic insects and larvae. The bill has vibration detectors called papillae inside the spoon which enables the bird to feel the vibrations of its prey in murky water. These birds nest in the colonies of other birds like the Ibises and Royal Spoonbills. They live in high forks of trees over water or in reed beds.
