Sybil CRAIG (18/11/1901-09/09/1989) Born London, England Arrived Melbourne 1902 Died Melbourne, Victoria Sybil Frances Craig was a student of John Shirlow in 1920 who introduced her to French avant-garde artists such as Matisse and Gauguin. In 1924 she studied at the National Gallery of Victoria Art School. She also underook private classes with George Bellfor several months where individual expression was encouraged, and she became associated with a group of Modernist artists including Sam Atyeo. In 1945 Sybil Craig became the third woman to be appointed as an official war artist. Based in Melbourne she worked for fourth months at the Commonwealth Ordinance Factory at Maribyrnong, becoming the first female artist to paint women working in the munitions factories. In her work Craig was attracted to many changing ideas and continued to explore line, rhythm, colour, simplicity and design. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. In 1899 the Boers, descendants of Dutch settlers, declared war on the British forces. Enthusiastic civilians throughout the Australian colonies volunteered for service, supported by their respective colonial governments. After Federation Commonwealth units were also mobilised. Others who were unable to join Colonial or Commonwealth units enlisted in forces raised by other nations including Britain and South Africa. The first joint colonial regiment, the Australian Regiment, was formed from companies representing Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania. The British gradually wore down Boer resistance, and peace was declared on 31 May 1902. Over 15,000 Australians served in the Boer War. Australian casualties totalled about 1400, with 518 killed. Six Australians were awarded the Victoria Cross for their bravery. Children in schools around the different colonies of Australia (this was prior to Federation) raised money to hold Peace picnics. Wodonga's Peace picnic was held at the racecourse. Only about 70 of these medallions were struck. They were presented to the children who raised the most money for the Peace picnic in each area.This artefact has local, national and international significance as it recognises the first major international conflict in which Australian colonial soldiers were involved,A small medallion issued in commemoration of peace at the end of the Boer War. Located in High Street, Wodonga, this hotel underwent many modifications and name changes. It was built c1859 by James Bambrick close to the intended rail terminal in Huon Street. The site of the rail terminal actually changed but the name remained. James Bambrick served three terms as Wodonga Council president and was it was commonly referred to as “Bambrick’s Hotel”. It included 30 rooms as well as dining facilities. James Bambrick ran the hotel until 1902 when it was sold to J. Donnelly for £3,000. In 1912, whilst operated by T. J. Weller, the residential section of the hotel was almost completely destroyed by fire but only the ceiling of the bar was damaged and it continued to operate. Over the ensuing years the licensee changed hands frequently. By 1952, John Perry, owner of the “Stump” Junction Hotel also had the freehold of the Railway Hotel At some stage in the mid 1980’s the hotel was renamed as the “Murray River Hotel”, but still displayed the sign of the Railway Hotel. In 2009, it was closed for a short time whilst renovations took place to convert it into O’Maille’s Irish Hotel. It was demolished in 2020. These images document changes to an important local building first established c1868. Eleanor Hinde (1842-1902) was born in Lancashire England. In 1858, Eleanor married Richard Reynold in the Forest St Wesleyn Methodist Church in Sandhurst. They both gave their address as Sailors Gully Goldfields. They had seven children together. Richard was a skilled tradesman and after he died in 1872 from lung disease, Eleanor married Arculus Opie. Eleanor owned a property on the corner of Gladstone and Stanley Streets which later became an electrical substation. She sold poultry and eggs and preserves. One of Eleanor's sons, William John, married Anna (Annie) Jorgensen, and one of her daughters. Amelia, married Anna's brother Thomas Joynes Jorgensen. The Jorgensens founded and managed Jorgensen and Sons foundry and engineering works. Peter Jorgensen (1849-1914), was a mining contractor, he lived at, "Bro," Russell street, Quarry Hill. His firm was Jorgensen and Sons, mining contractors. He was a native of the Island of Alsen, Denmark. He left Denmark in the year 1861, embarking at Hamburg in a small sailing Ship. The Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works (MMBW) plans were produced from the 1890s to the 1950s. They were crucial to the design and development of Melbourne's sewerage and drainage system. The plans, at a scale of 40 feet to 1 inch (1:480), provide a detailed historical record of Melbourne streetscapes and environmental features. Each plan covers one or two street blocks (roughly six streets), showing details of buildings, including garden layouts and ownership boundaries, and features such as laneways, drains, bridges, parks, municipal boundaries and other prominent landmarks as they existed at the time each plan was produced. (Source: State Library of Victoria)This plan forms part of a large group of MMBW plans and maps that was donated to the Society by the Mr Poulter, City Engineer of the City of Kew in 1989. Within this collection, thirty-five hand-coloured plans, backed with linen, are of statewide significance as they include annotations that provide details of construction materials used in buildings in the first decade of the 20th century as well as additional information about land ownership and usage. The copies in the Public Record Office Victoria and the State Library of Victoria are monochrome versions which do not denote building materials so that the maps in this collection are invaluable and unique tools for researchers and heritage consultants. A number of the plans are not held in the collection of the State Library of Victoria so they have the additional attribute of rarity.Original survey plan, issued by the MMBW to a contractor with responsibility for constructing sewers in the area identified on the plan within the Borough of Kew. The plan was at some stage hand-coloured, possibly by the contractor, but more likely by officers working in the Engineering Department of the Borough and later Town, then City of Kew. The hand-coloured sections of buildings on the plan were used to denote masonry or brick constructions (pink), weatherboard constructions (yellow), and public buildings (grey). The laborious task of hand-tinting these Board of Works plans was not without hazards as is evidenced by Plan No. 1593. On the Plan, the original colourist spilt black and green ink, partially obscuring some parts. The most obvious casualty is ‘Clifton’ located on the corner of Cotham Road and Park Street [now Adeney Avenue]. Included in this Plan, and outlined in pink is that part of the section that the contracting engineer was tasked with completing. This included sewering on both sides of this part of Cotham Road, but excluded properties such as ‘Glendonald’ and ‘Monnington’. This area was to undergo a series of subdivisions including the ‘Clifton Estate’, which created housing lots on Adeney Avenue and Florence Avenue in 1916. This is a typical family bible from the 1880's. It was owned by the Morgan family of Allansford but from the names in the back appears to have connections to the Cumming family also of Allansford.The original owners were John and Sarah Morgan who were great grandparents of the donor.A typical family bible which has connections to a local family.Brown leather hard cover with pages edged in gold. 1125 pages.It has side notes.
