The photograph depicts a large group (around 100) of merchant seamen, apprentices and officers at Malvern property, Orchard House, belonging to Mr George Higgins, in November 1019. Mr Higgins was a civil engineer, MCE, engineer in chief for the Victorian Railway, he also managed the contractors for the Princes Bridge.His sister Ina Higgins was first woman to graduate in Horticulture at Burnley and may have known another graduate there, Frederica Godfrey who established the Mission garden circa 1917-18. From Collection of miscellaneous papers and memorabilia belonging to Mr Arthur Oswald Dixon, a seafarer who eventually retired to Australia running a smallholding growing fruit and grapes.The A.O. Dixon collection is well provenanced and provides not only some insights into the working life of a seafarer of the merchant service but also includes photographs through ID papers. The Chindwara was a British training ship. It sailed several times to Australia. This house is probably "Findon", Studley Park in Kew, belonging to Mrs Aubrey Bowen, widow of eye surgeon Thomas Aubrey Bowen (1837-1893). She welcomed large groups of seamen (up to 125) for Boxing Day at least on three consecutive years in 1906, 1907, 1908. Early 20th C. image of crew members on board ship. It is thought that the basins were used to collect their meals as a way of ensuring minimum spillage when the vessel was under way. The Barque Crocodile out of Liverpool is documented in an Annual report as donating 15 shillings and sixpence from the crew towards the building fund for the Mission Building. The lady standing in the middle of the seamen is probably the hostess of the event. Hostess was often the secretary of a branch of the Ladies' Harbour Lights Guild. In January 1929, two parties were organised in the honour of the Wellers as they left Melbourne. Reverend Weller had been appointed assistant superintendent to the headquarters of the Missions to Seamen in London. They boarded the Osterley on the 22 January. Unfortunately Mrs Weller died in 1934. Many ladies on the photograph are yet to be identified. The Australian Submarine AE1 was launched on 22 May 1913 at Barrow-in-Furness and was lost at sea on 14 September 1914 in the vicinity of Rabaul, Papua New Guinea, probably due a collision with a reef. She was the first of two E Class submarines built for the fledgling Royal Australian Navy and was manned by Royal Navy officers with a mixed crew of sailors drawn from the Royal Navy and the Royal Australian Navy. "Accompanied by her sister AE2, under the command of Lieutenant Commander Henry Stoker, RN, AE1 departed England in March 1914, transited the Suez Canal, and reached Sydney on 24 May 1914. Although the submarines remained surfaced for almost all of the delivery voyage it was at the time the longest transit distance ever traveled by a submarine. At the outbreak of World War I, AE1 joined the naval forces assigned to the capture of the German Pacific colonies. With AE2, she took part in the operations leading to the occupation of German New Guinea, including the surrender of Rabaul on 13 September 1914." Features a number of post-WW2 members of the Ladies Harbour Lights Guild. Two of the Ladies standing centre back are Sadie Wilson and one other, Berenice who provided personal memories of their time as young hostesses at the Mission on the DVD 'The Lightbearers' produced by Csilla Tsongaray circa 2005The donations of Sadie Wilson are key sources of dates and information re the role of LHLG members mid to late 20th Century at the Mission, this photograph is thought to originate from one of these gifts of selected personal papers presented (date unknown) by Miss Wilson. Reunion outing of former Harbour Lights Guild members. Image names this image are from left to right Unidentified lady, Jesse, Betty, Marjorie Duckett, 2nd from right. The Duckett family had a long term involvement in and Marjorie's commitment to the Mission, was reflected in helping run the Altona Op Shop and later with a substantial donation to the Mission (see other entries for Duckett this database); Sheila Richardson at far right. Post WW2 the word ladies seems to have been eventually dropped and the term Harbour Lights Guild used instead.
