Newsletter, Camp Savige Newsletter
... Melbourne Legacy 293 Swanston Street Melbourne melbourne ...Undated but stapled to a further copy of 00130 which was dated 'Xmas 1932'. Pages headed 'Camp Savige, Wednesday' indicate that it was created for a camp at Stan Savige's property, recounting the cricket competition between the Dark Blues, Light Blues, Green and Orange teams. Written and illustrated by Pat Hanna in a satirical style it was clearly intended to entertain as much as to inform, but the humour would be seen to be heavy handed or not funny at all today. Nevertheless it demonstrates that campers enjoyed their stay. See also 01290 and 01289. In the early years, Legacy organised outings to the property of Legacy founder, Legatee Stan Savige, who had a place in Balnarring close to the beach. Permanent camp buildings were built in 1930. In 1930 Lord Somers (Governor of Victoria) also started a camp at a nearby property and the area was renamed Somers. Legacy Somers Camps continued intermittently at Stan's property until it was decided in 1951 to make other arrangements for holidays.Illustrates the sort of activities considered appropriate to occupy camp participants, and the amateur enthusiasm of the newsletter producers in the early half of the twentieth century.2 typed foolscap sheets black on cream, pencilled correction newsletter, legacy somers camp, savige property, camps -

Document, Script: "Figgers"
... Melbourne Legacy 293 Swanston Street Melbourne melbourne ...A script parodying the stage show 'Diggers' with which Pat Hanna entertained post WWI audiences. The parody adapts the 'Diggers' format to Legacy activities such as the girls' physical culture class, and reflects the mores of the times. There is no indication of date, but the design and writing style is similar to 01292, written in 1930. Pat Hanna (born George Patrick Hanna; 18 March 1888 in Whitianga, New Zealand) was a New Zealand-born film producer ; he was a soldier of the First World War who entertained postwar audiences with the stage show 'Diggers', that was adapted to a film of the same title in 1931. An example of the entertainment Legatees favoured to leaven their more serious activities.White paper with black type of a script of a scene called Figgers.hanna, gala performance -

Document - Menu card, Dinner to honour Legatee Stan Savige, 1939
... Melbourne Legacy 293 Swanston Street Melbourne melbourne ...The dinner on Saturday 4 November 1939 was held to celebrate Brigadier Savige's appointment to Command the 17th Infantry Brigade, 6th Division, 2nd AIF. The menu is included and the order of service with speeches by Sir John Gellibrand and a response by Stan Savige. A copy of both are also in the archive. There are five quotes through menu that sum up common sentiments of Stan Savige. Including 'Leave it to me and my little playmate'; 'This is the tamest fight I've seen - let's liven it up'; 'The only "experience" is trust in God then trial and error.' Savige's subsequent exploits in WWII are detailed in Chapter 4 of 'There goes a man' by W.B. Russell, which chronicles not only battles fought but also the politics which blighted his command until the end of the war. An important link to Legatee Stan Savige, the founder of Legacy as well as the famous soldier, at a watershed moment in his life.Cream card with red medal ribbon insert, brown print of a menu and programme to farewell Stan Savige in 1939.Signed in pencil by Stan Savige.stan savige, legatee function, dinner -

Document - Menu card, Farewell Dinner in honour of Group Captain the Hon. T.W. White, D.F.C., V.D, 1951
... Melbourne Legacy 293 Swanston Street Melbourne melbourne ...A menu card for a dinner given to farewell Group Captain Thomas W White, D.F.C., V.D given by his friends on the occasion of his appointment as High Commissioner for Australia in the United Kingdom. Although this dinner on 25 June 1951 was not an official Legacy function, many of the names such as S.H. Birrell, F.J. Doolan and J.G. Gillespie on the back page under the heading 'Hosts' are recognisable as Legatees. This may not have been an exhaustive list of attendees, as evidenced by the abbreviation E.& O.E. (errors and omissions excepted) following the list. T W White was knighted during his term as High Commissioner, but died of a heart attack in 1957 only a year after he retired to South Yarra. The food served at the dinner was typical of the times but the pudding (Bombe Nesselrode) is worthy of mention - it was a frozen pudding which was popular in the Victorian era, flavoured with chestnuts and maraschino, which is not often seen today. According to www.historicfood.com it was 'originally made by the French chef de cuisine Carême in 1814 for the diplomat Count Karl Von Nesselrode and became the most popular ice pudding of the nineteenth century, particularly appreciated by the English upper classes.' The menu card may have been collected by one of the Legatees that were present and added to the archive.A record that Legatees held very significant positions in their lives outside of Legacy. Networking activities of early Legatees spread through all levels of society, and they were able to draw on some very well placed contacts during the course of their work for Legacy.Dark blue print on white card of a menu and order of proceedings for the farewell dinner of TW White - 2 copiesfunction, thomas white -

Document, Legatee Frank Doolan notes on the Flanders Field poem, 1970s
... Melbourne Legacy 293 Swanston Street Melbourne melbourne ...Photocopy of an article in the 'You asked us' section about 'Flanders Fields, and the man who wrote it' published in The Toronto Star 13 November 1971. The article discusses the controversy surrounding the wording of the first and penultimate lines and claims that poet John McCrae originally originally wrote 'grow' but changed it to 'blow' when asked to by the editors of 'Punch'. The photocopy of the article was supplied by Legatee Ken Rabling. Legatee Frank Doolan signed the note he wrote to accompany the photocopy and dated it 7/8/73. An item from Legatee Frank Doolan, who was on the archive committee and made attempts to collate the history of Legacy. An example of the ongoing controversy surrounding the disputed wording. The poem 'In Flanders Field' was the inspiration for the torch of the Legacy Badge with McCrae's call to the reader to take up The Torch, as the organisation did by looking after the widows and families of fallen soldiers.01302.1 Handwritten signed note in blue ball point, address stamped in black. 01302.2 Photocopy of a page from 'The Star Weekly', Toronto, Canada dated 13 November 1971.01302.1 Top right hand side 'Box 16'poem, history -

Newspaper - Article, The Sun News Pictorial, Brother won VC, 1956
... Melbourne Legacy 293 Swanston Street Melbourne melbourne ...An article on the front page of The Sun with a photo from the 1956 School Students Ceremony. It was published on Anzac Day with articles estimating 20,000 people to march in the Anzac parade and the weather was inclement. The photo shows Margaret Mackey wearing her brother John Mackey's Victoria Cross The article was in a folder of documents about the history of Legacy which appears to have been mostly compiled by Legatee Cyril Smith as he has many hand written notes on miscellaneous pieces of paper (some are envelopes addressed to him). The notes were typed up into a summary of the History of Legacy. Also documents relating to the first time Legacy approached the public for donations in September 1956, including newspaper articles that were reprinted, a schedule of information that was approved to be released to the press, and a list of potential donors that was circulated to Legatees in the hope they could contact the ones they knew personally or professionally. The call for public donations was partially due to the purchase of the Dureau building and the need to modify the building for Legacy's needs. The documents from this folder have been added in separate records (see 01262 to 01281). The folder was part of an attempt to capture history of Legacy, generally from the 1950s.The collection of documents provide an insight into the working of Legacy, especially in the 1950s.
