Steel-jawed rabbit traps were widely used in urban and rural Australia from 1880 to 1980. This trap is symbolic of the battle that Australians have waged against burgeoning rabbit populations for over a century. Despite the fact that most children first learn about rabbits as cute and cuddly animals, rabbits cause enormous damage to Australian soils and biodiversity. The introduction of rabbits to this country was an environmental disaster. Lane's Ace rabbit trap was the most commonly used trap in Australia. Hundreds of thousands of the traps were made and used in this country. As such, this item is representative of every day life in Australia during the period from 1880 to 1980. During the Great Depression from 1929 to 1932, rabbit trapping was a means of survival for many people. This was a very fashionable at that time as knitted and crocheted garments were making a comeback. Annie and William Booth, with their five children, left England to migrate to Australia in 1923. They came on the maiden of the S.S.Demosthenes. They bought and occupied land - six and half acres in Orchard Grove, Blackburn South - from 1923 to 1942 when the moved to Salisbury Street, Mont Albert.|William Booth obtained an office position with Danks where he remained till retirement.|The home in Orchard Grove was called 'Marple' after the place in England where the honeymooners.|They ran poultry and an orchard - apples, plums, quinces and peaches which were sold for additional income. Information from the notes of Nancy Leach re Emma Elizabeth Weston who sailed for Melbourne on the 'Charlotte Gladstone' on 9/9/1869. She subsequently ran a bakery in Swanston street and later married Thomas Scott, Tinner and Galvanizer. They lived in Victoria street (now rooks Road) and had several children, one daughter being named Emma. Emma married Mr. Ottenbach who jumped ship from the German navy and they had a daughter, Christina who was a member of the Nunawading Historical society. Lake King in Rutherglen Park is a man made lake and was the town's original reservoir for household water supplies. After the Water Tower was built, Lake King was used by the local children as a swimming pool. The Northern District School of Nursing opened in 1950 in to address the issues around nurse recruitment, training and education that had previously been hospital based. The residential school was to provide theoretical and in-house education and practical training over three years. The students would also receive practical hands-on training in the wards of associated hospitals. The Northern District School of Nursing operated from Lister House, Rowan Street, Bendigo.
