Headwear - Green & Brown Silk 'Cloche' Hat, Anne Harrison of Kew, 1950s
Marion 'Annie' (Cooper) Harrison, a milliner by trade, designed and made women’s hats, initially in the 1940s in High Street, and later in the 1950s and 60s at 5 Princess Street. The hats were constructed upstairs in her shop in Princes Street while the ground floor was reserved for sales and display. She employed other milliners to assist but always ran the showroom herself. Hectic periods were in the weeks before the big racing carnivals when the many wealthy race-goers of Kew kept her busy. She typically walked to her business as she and her husband, Fred Harrison, lived locally. Annie died in April 2016, at the great age of 107 years. Her hats are held in local and national collections. The Kew Historical Society’s fashion and design collection is comprised of costumes, hats, shoes and personal accessories. Many of these items were purchased or handmade in Victoria; some locally in Kew. The extensive hat collection comprises items dating from the 1860s to the 1970s. While most of the hats in the collection were created by milliners for women, there are a number of early and important men’s hats in the collection. The headwear collection is particularly significant in that it includes the work of notable Australian and international milliners.Pale green silk woman’s hat in a soft unstructured style retailed by Anne Harrison of Kew. Uniform - Hat Band
In the evening of 20 November 1940, while en route from Queenscliff to Portsea in Port Phillip Bay where she intended to anchor for the evening, she collided with the 10,364 ton, outward bound passenger liner, MV Duntroon, which struck her amidships on the port side. Duntroon’s captain had believed that she was on a parallel course to Goorangai and overtaking her. By the time he realised Goorangai’s true course, with Duntroon travelling at more than 17 knots, it was too late to avoid the collision. Goorangai was cut in two and sank in less than a minute with the loss of her entire crew of 24. Just six bodies were recovered in subsequent salvage operations. She was the first ship lost by the RAN in World War II.This event is still remembered by the community at an annual ceremony in Queenscliffe. The hat band holds Victorian Heritage Register number S294 / 151982A hat band of Signalman Jack Herbert RAN mounted on a display board containing a copy of a signed photograph of the HMAS Goorangai ships company and an extract of his service record.hmas goorangai, mv duntroon, wwii, royal australian navy, port phillip -
Melbourne Water
Melbourne Water Watch, 1996
As the Yarra became unsuitable as a source of water, several attempts were made to find alternative sources for the growing population of Melbourne. It was not until 1891 that the efforts to sewer Melbourne came to fruition with the setting up of the Melbourne Metropolitan Board of Works (MMBW), now known as Melbourne Water. From 1891 until 1992, it was the responsibility of the MMBW to safeguard public health by providing a sewerage system and a safe water supply system. In 1992, The MMBW merged with a number of smaller urban water authorities to form Melbourne Water. This Melbourne Water watch was gifted to a Melbourne Water staff member by her manager when she left the organisation in 1996. The watch was part of a branding campaign as the water industry became segregated in 1994.This item is of historical significance for its association with Melbourne Water at the time when the water industry became segregated in 1994. This watch is a perfectly intact object and is significant for its representativeness of the theme of Women in the Workforce within the MMBW and Melbourne Water as it was gifted to a female employee. The watch is also aesthetically pleasing in style and represents the trends of the 1990s. Gold plated, black leather band watch with the Melbourne Water logo on the face with accompanying black suede case with gold corners. The watch also comes with a warranty inside.melbourne metropolitan board of works, mmbw, melbourne water, watch, accessory, gift -
