The SECV constructed the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme which included race lines to catch the water and feed it into the dams that they built to create hydro electric power. The rail line was used to construct the race line and enables the race line to be easily checked for maintenance eg. fallen trees The SECV constructed the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme from the late 1940s to 1961 being one of the first hydro schemes and hence environmently friendly.Shiny black and white photo showing the railway track, with a locomotive on it, beside the race line. Black and white photograph in light brown card slip case. The slip case has an image on the front cover of a head and shoulder bust. The photograph was taken about 1900 from the tower of the Grand Hotel looking down upon the Victoria Hall and the railway crossing. In the lower left corner is W.J.Dawborn's General Store. In front of the store is a horse and spring dray and another horse hitched to a veranda post. Next to the store is the Victoria Hall and beyond that a water trough. The railway crossing is in the centre of the picture with two railway cattle trucks next to the cattle yards. Beyond the railway on the left hand side is the property later known as 'River View'. Beyond the river lined with trees are the Yering flats across which can be seen the long trestle railway bridge. 1965 fire at the Bendigo Railway Station A dull explosion in the refreshment room about 1:30 p.m. touched off the blaze, which quickly spread and burnt out the station in less than an hour. Just before the explosion a train carrying more than 200 Melbourne-bound holiday makers pulled out of the station. Scores of railways employees in other parts of the station did not realise the refreshment room was on fire until a signal box attendant gave the alarm. Early estimates place damage at more than £100,000. Quick work by station staff saved many thousands of pounds worth of equipment before flames engulfed the building from end to end. At the height of the blaze, a Bendigo fire brigade Station Officer, Vin Lapsley, fell 18 feet – and miraculously landed on his feet – after being overcome by smoke while directing a hose from a ladder on to the roof. Mr. Lapsley was later treated for a broken bone in his right leg.Many images from by Arthur Pulfer copied to slides. Opening Heathmont Railway Station in May 1926. The photo shows the audience, including Bill Everard MLA, at the entrance to the railway platform. The Station building was located on the west side of the tracks, near the corner of Heathmont and Canterbury Roads. At the officially opening, the ribbon was cut by Louise Pump, wife of Herman.
