Caroline (Carrie) Shillinglaw was the third child of Phillip and Sarah Shillinglaw, born 29 February 1876 in Bundoora. She commenced school at Eltham State School No. 209 in Dalton Street in April 1882. She married Christopher Watson on 23 Oct. 1907. The obelisk was originally dedicate to those that fell in the First World War and was dedicated in 1919. It was located on the corner of Bridge Street and Main Road. With road works undertaken in the 1950s, the obelisk was relocated to the front Garden of Remembrance at the Eltham RSL Sub-Branch diagonally across Main Road from its original location. Walking or driving up Main Road, you enter Eltham’s Avenue of Honour, with its rows of plane trees, each commemorating the death of a soldier sent to fight in World War 1. 115 trees were first planted on 21st September 1917 beginning at “the flat” to the intersection of Pitt Street. Tree guards and copper name plates were later added. In the ‘20s and ‘30s too many branches were broken off by carriers whipping their horses up the steep slope. In the 1950s many of the original trees were removed for road widening and new plane trees were planted in their place. In June 2015 during the Anzac Centenary, Nillumbik Shire Council dedicated the new Avenue of Honour in the Eltham Gateway. New markers commemorate local soldiers. Eltham Gateway, The old Bootmaker's Cottage adjacent to Whitecloud Cottage, 701 Main Road, Eltham The bootmaker's shop was operated by John Henry (Harry) Clark from about 1930. Clark was originally a photographer along with his brothers William (Will) Charles Clark and Clement Kent Clark. They operated as Clark Bros Photographers based at 25 Thomas Street, Windsor (Prahran) from about 1895 to 1915 at which point the premises was demolished.. Brother Clement died in 1912. By 1916 Harry was living and working as a photographer in Eltham and was recorded on the electoral rolls as a photographer up to and incliiding at least 1928. By 1931 he had changed proession to Bootmake and again continued on Main Road, Eltham South as a Bootmake at least until 1954. He died at St Vincent'e Hospital in Dec 1956. It is believed non of the brothers married. Previously it was Dave Lyon’s original home and immediately to the right (carpark) was the location of his original motor garage – a tin shed witrh petrol bowsers out front. When Dave Lyon built a new garage opposite Arthuir Street, Charmac Industries then operated out of the tin shed.
