Milagros is inspired by the Mexican tradition of pinning ‘ex-votos’ or ‘milagros’ onto the robes of Patron Saints when requesting a miracle. Ex-votos or milagros are votive offerings of small metal shapes which represent a visual form of people’s prayers. The central question in this piece is:If the creatures of the river could, which ones would be asking their Patron Saints for a miracle or two? Mitcham Post Office began in a shop in Whitehorse Road next but one from Elizabeth Street and Whitehorse Road. They moved to a shop on the corner of Whitehorse Road and Station Street with Mrs. Markham as Post Mistress. She had an assortment of items for sale in the shop. They daughter May married and lived with her parents and had quite a large family. Mary set up a photographic service, developing films and taking portraits of people and taking sets of photographs of the Mitcham area and selling photographic supplies for Kodak and Hesma. Photograph is of Sir John Bowser as a young man, probably shortly after he settled in Wangaratta about 1880. In 1884 he became editor and part-owner of the Wangaratta Chronicle. In 20 November 1894 he won the Wangaratta and Rutherglen seat in the Legislative Assembly by only thirteen votes. He remained in the Victorian Parliament for many years and in November 1917 he became premier, chief secretary and minister of labour. LADIES PONY GIG – circa early 1900’s) The gig was built by T Rose, North Melbourne. Australian coachbuilders adopted American designs and modified these to suit local conditions, eg mudguards added for muddy country roads. As roads improved, lighter and faster designs were made. These gigs were more comfortable than the normal farm cart / town cart (see nearby butcher’s cart), as they were often sprung for comfort rather than carrying heavy weights. The Government first granted land for the building of a Presbyterian Church in Sunbury in Stawell Street and Barkly Street, in 1864 and a smaller building was later erected on the site. In 1904 Rev Goyen pressed for a brick church rep[lace the smaller weather board building and the foundation stone was laid for the new church was laid by Mrs. John Duncan on 17th August 1904 and the new church opened by Lady Clarke on 13th November 1904.The Presbyterian Church was one of the earliest churches to be established in Sunbury along with a school.A non-digital sepia photograph in post card format of the front view of a brick church with a light picket fence across the front.

John Colin Reaburn, also known as Jack, (1899 -1987) was an accountant by profession and an early contributor to the historical collection. He was also an active member of the Surrey Hills Progress Association.
