Document (item) - Invitation, City of Kew, Mayoral Ball, 1939
The Municipality of Kew (1860-1863), the Borough of Kew (1863-1910), the Town of Kew (1910-1921) and the City of Kew (1921-1994) were local government instrumentalities in the State of Victoria. In 1994, the City of Kew was amalgamated, together with the former Cities of Camberwell and Hawthorn, into the new City of Boroondara (1994- ). Like other local government entities of the period, Kew was administered by town clerks. The two notable town clerks in Kew's history were H. H. (Henry Hirst) Harrison (1868-1955) and W. D. (William Dickie) Birrell (1899-1974). Harrison was appointed to the position in 1901 and retired in 1938 after 37 years. Birrell, appointed Acting Town Clerk in 1921, became Town Clerk in 1938, following Harrison's retirement. He continued in this role until his retirement in 1966.This card is part of an historically significant civic collection, containing hundreds of separate invitations, documents, greeting cards, programmes and tickets issued and/or collected by successive town clerks. Items in the collection illuminate the political, social and cultural history of the district. As a continuous record, ranging across most decades of the Twentieth Century, they reveal changing tastes in design, values and relationships in the history of local government in Victoria.THE MAYOR AND MAYORESS OF KEW / (CT & MRS J T GAZZARD) / REQUEST THE PLEASURE OF THE COMPANY OF / The President Kew Sub-Branch RSSAILA and Lady / AT A BALL AT THE HAWTHORN TOWN HALL / ON THURSDAY 29TH JUNE 1939 / AT 8.30 P.M. / THE FAVOUR OF A REPLY ADDRESSED TO THE TOWN CLERK, KEW IS REQUESTED BEFORE 17TH JUNE / ON RECEIPT OF ACCEPTANCE / AN ENTREE CARD WILL BE FORWARDED. civic invitations -- kew (vic), cr j t gazzard, mayoral balls -- kew (vic.) -

Certificate - Permit, Department of Labour & National Service, Manpower Directorate et al, Employee's Copy of Employer's Permit to Terminate Services, Mr GH Rogers, Council for Scientific & Industrial Research (East Melbourne), 1944
This work forms part of the collection assembled by the historian Dorothy Rogers, that was donated to the Kew Historical Society by her son John Rogers in 2015. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand. The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian in the 1960s and 1970s. Together it forms the largest privately-donated collection within the archives of the Kew Historical Society.Document, issued by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research [CSIRO], East Melbourne in 1944, terminating the employment of Mr. G. Magazines, 1944
In November 1932, Frank Packer and Ted Theodore purchased the World, a struggling afternoon newspaper owned and operated by the Australian Workers' Union in Sydney, and re-branded it as the Star. Approached by Sir Hugh Denison, who enjoyed a monopoly over the Sydney newspaper market, they were offered 86,500 Pounds to close the paper if they agreed not to publish a morning, evening or Sunday newspaper within a 300-mile radius of the city for three years. Packer and Theodore accepted the offer, the the Weekly was a way of skirting the embargo, it would be a women's newspaper, and it would be self-sufficient. George Warnecke envisioned the Weekly as a publication with an Australian outlook, appealing to all sections of society, and offering an element of news in every article, whether it concern fashion, cookery, or parenting. When the first issue appeared in Sydney on June 10, 1933, it was printed in black-and-white newspaper format and priced at twopence per copy, "the biggest value in the world". It had sold out by lunchtime. 4 x Australian Women's Weekly magazines. Dated:- 1. December 4, 1943; 2. July 29, 1944; 3. August 5, 1944; and 4. September 2, 1944. All were priced at 4d.magazines -

The Brookside Private Reformatory for Protestant Girls was established on 29 December 1887 by Mrs W. T. Rowe. It was initially established at Glenfine, and soon moved to more extensive premises in the town of Cape Clear, near Scarsdale. The establishement of private reformatories had been made possible by The Juvenile Offenders' Act 1887 , which was assented to only weeks before the opening of Brookside. The Mintaro Reformatory Home for Girls at Monegeetta, Lancefield was established in 1903 by the Methodist Home Mission Department to take the girls from the Brookside Reformatory at Cape Clear when it closed in 1903. Set of four colour prints of an Ex Victorian Railways bogie tram body at Sloan NSW. Photo by Norm Cross, printed on AGFA paper. Photo dated 1/1/1994. Advised by Tony Smith - 29/3/2017 "The tram in question is VR 39. It was one of the last 4 trams disposed of from Elwood depot in 1959 after the system closed. They were purchased complete by Upton's machinery dealers of Corowa. The other cars were 29, 33 & 37. He then stripped them and sold the bodies. When we obtained VR 41 in 1977 we immediately went searching for other bodies that might yield parts to help in rebuilding 41. We located 37 on the outskirts of Wangaratta and it yielded many body items including a complete drivers bulkhead that was used to replace the one in VR 41 that had been cut out with an axle by the previous owner. You may also recall that we obtained 3 complete broad gauge 77e trucks from Upton's (they had cut up the other 5 bogies years previous). These 77E trucks are now under the Christchurch Brill tram with the 3rd as a spare as we were able to obtain standard gauge 77e's when we acquired L 105 for dismantling."Each photo has written in ink on the rear "Body of VR tram # @ Sloan NSW 1 Jan 1994, photo by Norm Cross".trams, tramways, vr trams, sale of trams, scrapped trams, tram 39 -

James Robb (born 1940) was an importer and manufacturer of all kinds of saddlery. References: Centre for Australian Art, 2020 http://www.printsandprintmaking.gov.au/impressions/31305/ Faded, mustard coloured woven strap with buckles on either end. Centre of strap has a thin leather belt loop attached. Buckles are attached with brown, rectangular leather strips which appear to be hand-sewn to strap in white thread. Two holes which appear to be for a buckle prong, are visible on one side above the leather buckle attachment. A row of machine stitched holes on this side suggests a rectangular, arrow headed strap was once attached.J. ROBB MAKER HOBARTTOWN stamped into brown leather buckle attachments. -
