Wilfred Clarence Busse, born in Chiltern in 1898, His family moved to the region during the gold rush and continued to reside in the area, purchasing land adjacent the Murray River. Busse completed his secondary education at Wesley College in Melbourne then studied law at the University of Melbourne. Busse went on to become a barrister, often in the chambers of Sir Leo Finn Bernard Cussen (1859-1933) a judge of the Supreme Court of Victoria. He worked most of his life in Chiltern as a Barrister and Solicitor and gained the unofficial title of historian of Chiltern, leaving behind several manuscript histories and a scrap book. Busse was an avid fictional writer and in 1930 he published two novels. Time spent on a Victorian station in his early twenties, as well as careful documentary research, informed the writing of his historical novels of bush life. "The Blue Beyond; A Romance of the Early Days in South Eastern Australia” and "The Golden Plague: A Romance of the Early Fifties." "The Golden Plague” won the T. E. Role gold medal for the best historical novel which went on to become a best seller. Busse often drew inspiration for his novels from his younger years living Chiltern. His passion for the region lead him to write “The History of Chiltern” which was published in a serial form in the Chiltern Federal Standard from 1922-1923. Wilfred Clarence Busse was a member of Chiltern Athenaeum (where this object is now held) up until his death in 1960, he is buried in the Barnawartha Cemetery. The floral motif on this particular spoon appears to be stylised in the decorative arts and craft style favoured in Europe between 1880-1920 and less representational than examples of Australiana flora captured in silversmithing from the 1850's onwards produced in Australia. It is likely that those producing silverware at the time would be drawing on the decorative arts movement while incorporating elements of the natural beauty in the flora of their newfound environment into the silverware they produced. This spoon seems more likely to have been produced in Europe and imported to the colony. The hallmarks on the handle DON and BP indicate it may have been produced from English electroplating silver which is a more cost effective product than solid silver, most likely produced by Cooper Brothers, Don Plate Works, established in Sheffield in 1866 who distributed silverware in Europe, America and the colonies well into the 1950's.Wilfred Clarence Busse was of social significance to Chiltern, he helped to document the cultural story of the area in his published works "The Golden Plague" and "The Beyond Blue" by recounting his own upbringing in a bush lifestyle. He was a respected Barrister and was the unofficial historian of the Chiltern Athenaeum for many years. This spoon represents a window into the domestic life of this person who was well loved in the area, and it continues its relationship to Busse as well as Chiltern by being held within the very collection he helped to maintain in his life. Domestic objects tell us the story about how people lived, objects of daily use hold particular meaning in that they can tell us the story of an individual, we feel closer to their life and habits, it humanises and connects us across time. This painting was created by Robert Dowling (1827-1886) in 1885. At this time Dowling was considered Australia's best portraitist. Dowling had been born in England, but migrated to Van Diemen's Land in the early 1830s with his parents. Dowling worked in both Tasmania and Victoria as an artist, before returning to England in 1857. He did not return to Australia until 1884 and received eighteen commissions for portraits. The Barry portrait was commissioned after Barry's death which explains some of the mistakes in the depiction of Barry's robes; the fur cuffs and collar are too large, and the cummerbund is sitting in the wrong place. Sir Redmond Barry is an important figure in Colonial Victorian History, responsible for the establishment and support of some of our finest cultural institutions (the University of Melbourne, the State Library of Victoria, the Supreme Court Library, and aspects of the Museum of Victoria's collection). This is in addition to his role as barrister defending aborigines in the 1840s and his position as a foundation judge of the Supreme Court of Victoria, a position he held for nearly 30 years, presiding over two of the most well known of colonial trials: the Eureka Trials in 1854 and the Kelly trial in 1880.The portrait of Sir Redmond Barry is significant because of the historical importance of Redmond Barry in colonial Victorian history. This book contains selections of the convict stories written by Price Warung, 1864-1911(real name William Astley). He was a journalist and writer who worked for a great number of newspapers throughout Australia and began an important association with the Sydney ‘Bulletin’ in 1890. In this period he write the powerful works for which he is best known, ‘Convict Days’, a series of four volumes of stories about Australia’s convict system. The major theme of these writings is the sordid nature of the convict system. Astley became heavily involved in the Federation campaign, firstly as the Secretary of the Bathurst Federal League and then as the organizing Secretary of the 1896 Bathurst Convention. This Convention is considered by historians to have given the Federation campaign a new and vigorous vitality. In 1898 Astley wrote most of the official articles publishing the ‘Yes’ case for the Federation referendum. In 1883 Astley was in Warrnambool, working as a journalist for the Warrnambool Standard newspaper and examples of his journalism can be found in the papers of this time. He wrote lengthy reports in a free-flowing and attractive but verbose style. His two articles on the well-known horse stud and hop farm called ‘Bryan O’Lynn’ appeared in the Standard in October 1884. This book is of considerable interest as it was written by Price Warung (William Astley). Not only is he of importance in Australia’ history but also he has his place in Warrnambool’s history as a journalist for the Warrnambool Standard in the 1880s. This is a hard cover book of 206 pages. The cover is grey with pink lettering on the spine. Agitation for a railway extension began in 1888 when a meeting was held at Arthurs Creek to press for the construction of a railway line from Heidelberg to Kinglake. The Chairman Mr Charles Draper said this was necessary because this was the best fruit growing district in Victoria. Mr Cameron M.P. pointed out that whatever route the line took it would have to follow the Diamond Valley from Eltham. At the same time another meeting was pressing for the line to be extended to Queenstown (St Andrews). However when detailed surveys were made it was discovered that the only possible route was to Hurstbridge because of the hills. In 1912 the railway was opened terminating at Hurstbridge. View from Grace Mitchell's shop at the corner of Mount Pleasant Road and Main Road. Grace Mitchell was probably best known for her Eltham shop at the corner of Mt Pleasant Road and Main Road. Grace's memories covered many local identities who were patrons of her shop between 1954 and 1971. From the elevated position of her shop and home Grace was able to view a varied passing parade of Eltham events from ERSILAC, Easter and Eltham Festival parades passing on their way to Eltham Lower Park, circuses in Wingrove Park (then Bremner’s Reserve), roadworks and other happenings. Bremner's Reserve was renamed Wingrove Park c.1970 This photo was from a series of images presented by Grace Mitchell at a Society talk 10 March 1993 on the theme of “My Eltham”. [from a contemporary report:] 1979: 11-20 August. “Along the Main Road” The Society's participation in this year's Eltham Community Festival was highly successful. We arranged an exhibition in the Eltham Library on the theme of ''Along the Main Road" and our float in the Festival Grand Parade won the prize donated by Pegasus Interiors for the best Eltham theme. The success of the float was due mainly to the efforts of Joh Ebeli. Joh was entirely responsible for the design and artistic work on the float and with help from Geoffrey Loftus-Hills and Mark Gough actually constructed it. Members and friends together with members of the Victorian Folk Music Club completed the picture, riding on and walking with the float in the parade. Mrs Opal Smith and Mrs B. Brinkkotter organized many of the costumes for participating members and Mrs Phyllis MacDonald made the arrangements with the Victorian Folk Music Club. Thanks are also due to Mr P. Quirke of Research Fruit Supply for the loan of his truck and to Eltham Hardware and Plumbing Supplies for the donation of materials for construction of the float. On November 11th 1929 the Shire of Eltham War Memorial Tower at Kangaroo Ground was opened. It is regarded as one of Melbourne’s most outstanding lookout towers. It commands a magnificent 360 degree panorama from Kinglake across the Diamond Valley to Macedon and the You Yangs. It is built on a peak which was once a volcano, 237 metres above sea level. After World War one a memorial cairn was erected on the site, and in 1925 a committee of public-minded citizens began to plan for a tower. Many generous donations of material and money were forthcoming so that in 1926 the Governor General Lord Stonehaven was able to unveil the plaque before a crowd of 500 people. There was some concern in the 1960s when the Forests Commission wanted to build a firespotters cabin on the top. At first R.S.L. branches opposed the idea, but it was realised that this use could combine with its use as a tourist attraction, and would ensure its maintenance for the future, Today the Kangaroo Ground tower provides one of the best views around Melbourne and is a fitting memorial to those who died in two world wars. This book contains essays written by Walter Murdoch in 1935. Walter Logie Forbes Murdoch (1874-1970) had a distinguished academic career and became Australia’s best-known essayist. He was a household name to two generations of Australians through his radio broadcasts and syndicated literary columns in several Australian newspapers. In 1901 Walter Murdoch came to Warrnambool, going into partnership with James Scott, the Headmaster of Warrnambool College. They bought out Stanley’s Warrnambool Grammar School. When Scott retired Murdoch became the sole owner and Headmaster of the school. While in Warrnambool Murdoch wrote a textbook, ‘The Struggle for Freedom’, a book which covers English constitutional history and has chapters on Australian government at all levels including the new Federal Government. In 1904 Murdoch left Warrnambool to take up a position lecturing in English at Melbourne University. He went on to become the foundation Professor of English at the University of Western Australia and later its Chancellor. Murdoch University in Western Australia is named after him. Murdoch published over 40 books, one of which is the collection of essays called’ Moreover’. He was knighted in 1964. This book is of interest as an example of the writings of Walter Murdoch, an important Australian literary figure who was a resident of warrnamboo and proprietor of a private school in the town in the early 1900s. This is a hard cover book of 252 pages. The cover is green with an image of a quill pen on the front cover. The book has a preface, a contents page, 33 essays by Walter Murdoch and an index. Vic WOOD (1939 - 02 October 2020) Born Melbourne, Victoria Vic Wood was an internationally renowned artist, craftsman and teacher from the 1970s. He studied gold and silversmithing, woodturning and cabinet making at Melbourne Teachers' College and Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. He was a skilled woodturner who, as a lecturer at Melbourne College of Advanced Education, taught a generation of woodworkers. Best known as a master wood-turner, Vic Wood retired from lecturing in 1983 to become a full-time woodturner. He was a sought after demonstrator and presenter for all kinds of local and international events. His teaching philosophy was simple: ‘share everything, have nothing to hide, and have no secrets; for ultimately it is in giving that you receive’. Vic Wood was a foundation member and inaugural president of the Victorian Woodworkers Association (VWA). In 1923 the Victorian Woodworkers Association announced the establishment of an annual Vic Wood Scholarship. he intent of the award is to promote excellence in woodwork and to engender inclusive and supportive woodworking networks. Australian Magazine (A.M.) published a special three page article about Falls Creek and the Bogong High Plains on 24th August 1954. The article was titled "Australia's playground of the future". Written by Muir Maclaren, it referred to the Bogong High Plains as a comparatively new and unexploited winter playground which could be one of the best snow resorts in the world. There were 13 huts which were at Falls Creek which were there due to "hard work, the grace of God, and the permission of the Victorian State Electricity Commission". A brief history of the Albury Ski Club Lodge was included. In 1954 the Lodge was run byLes Meikle and had the Club had a membership of 200 people. Lodges with accommodation established at this time, with the ability to house a total of 280 people, included Albury, Skyline, Bogong, Myrtleford, Hymans, Dawn, Galleon, Kiewa Valley, Snowden, Nelse, Moroma, Trowalla, St, Trinian's, Bowna and Nissen. Two pages from an edition of the Bulletin on 5 March 2015. It shows the 1932 Legacy Anzac Commemoration for Students at the temporary Cenotaph in Spring Street. The article by David Cull has some of the history of the service. He uses a quote by Legatee Rupert Heley from 1940. “This service has for us a much greater meaning than one of remembrance only. Cambourne homestead was built by 1903 for Rebecca S. Carkeek, who purchased the property in Wodonga in 1899. Cambourne is situated on the original Wodonga run which was established in 1836. The township of Belvoir, later renamed as Wodonga. In 1855 the pre-emptive right of 171 acres of the Wodonga run was granted and sold the following year. The allotments on which the five-acre Cambourne property developed, were purchased in 1873 and 1876, coinciding with the opening of the railway from Melbourne. The property was purchased by Rebecca Carkeek in June 1899, wife of William Carkeek, publican of Wodonga and shire councillor. Local architects Gordon and Gordon have been credited with the design of Cambourne. The house at Cambourne was built at some stage between 1900 and 1903 as a large single storey homestead. It was constructed in red brick with corrugated iron roof and encircling verandah. Cambourne is a probable work of architects Gordon and Gordon, it is amongst their best preserved and one of their few surviving buildings in Victoria. Today Cambourne remains on a reduced allotment due to the acquisition of land in 1972 by the Country Roads Board and in 2006 by Vic Roads for road works adjacent to the property.This drawing is significant as a representation of Cambourne in Wodonga. Cambourne is of historical significance due to its links with the early settlement of the district and as an example of closer settlement which occurred in regional centres of the State. Cambourne, Wodonga is also of architectural significance as a largely intact late Victorian style house with elaborate decorative cast iron work and distinctive transverse plan. This photograph was taken circa 1981 - 1982 by Tourism Victoria. Orest “Ory” Frueauf was born in Kharkov, Russia in 1925 and moved to Germany with his family to escape persecution. He was conscripted to the German Army during the Second World War. He was a POW until 1948. He was recruited by a French construction company to work as and interpreter on a hydroelectricity project in Tasmania. Ory then moved to work on the Snowy Mountain Scheme including driving a truck to fill the wall of the Rocky Valley dam. In 1952 Ory was recruited by the Albury Ski Club as its lodge supervisor. That year he also entered into a business partnership with Cecil Dobson, running the general store “Whitehaven” and Post Office at Falls Creek. They extended their business by adding accommodation turning Whitehaven into one of the best commercial lodges at Falls Creek. Ory and Cecil dissolved their business partnership in 1963 and Ory went on to build a new lodge called “Snowhaven” at the site of the present day Frueauf Village, Falls Creek. The trail known as Ory's Trail is also named in his honour. These 27 photographs were taken at an Army Survey Regiment Open Day at Fortuna Villa, Bendigo on the 24th of February 1990. This occasion was one of several events held to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the formation of the Royal Australian Survey Corps. Although historical tours of Fortuna occurred on a regular basis, this was the first technical open day since 1972. The Royal Australian Survey Corps recognised that an Open Day was the best way for the local community in Bendigo to gain an insight into the unit’s important role as Defence’s map production agency, its technical equipment, and its economic importance to Bendigo. It also gave them an opportunity to tour through historic Fortuna Villa. These 41 photographs were taken at Bones Day, an annual sports competition between the Army Survey Regiment and the RAAF School of Radio, at Bendigo on the 14th of November 1984. The two units took turns each year to host the event. The day competition usually comprised basketball, cricket, cross country, golf, pistol shooting, sailing, squash, rifle shooting, softball, tennis, touch football, tug-of-war and volleyball. The “big bone” trophy comprising a large bone from a beast housed inside a wooden framed glass case, was awarded to the winner of the day competition. The “O.H.A.R.A Rock” seen on the table in photo 6585.10P was awarded to the shooter with the lowest score in rifle shooting. The evening competition often included darts, carpet bowls, hookey, quoits and billiards/snooker. The “little bone” (a mounted chicken bone) was the consolation trophy awarded to the winner of the evening competition. The 3-hour bus trip for the visiting unit on their return was typically very raucous.
