This item is part of the Dodgson Collection, which was bequeathed to Queen's College in 1892 by the Rev. James Dodgson. The collection was created by Aquila Dodgson, brother of James. Aquila Dodgson was a friend of the English Egyptologist Flinders Petrie, and it was through this friendship the Aquila was able to acquire ancient Egyptian artefacts. A double-bevelled broad axe can be used for chopping or notching and hewing. When used for hewing, a notch is chopped in the side of the log down to a marked line, called scoring. The pieces of wood between these notches are removed with an axe, called juggling, and then the remaining wood is chopped away to the line. Broad axe head; handmade. A souvenir paper knife made from a piece of wood salvaged from HMS WARSPITE. This is fashioned form a piece of wood and is in the shape of a paper envelope opener, it has a small brass label attached to one surface.
