Console Telephone 10 shutter, circa early 1900s
This manual telephone exchange console is an important piece of equipment which provided the most efficient method of long distance communications in the 1950's to the 1980's. Communications were critical, not only for the regional Hospital, but also for large construction sites i.e. the Kiewa Hydro Scheme, especially if they are in dense rugged mountainous regions. The degree of Occupation Health and Welfare on industrial sites were at a bare minimum compared to the work scene after the 1980's.This telephone exchange console is highly significant to both the Kiewa Valley and Mount Beauty region because it was so important in the communications field relating to operational safety and work related controls. The success of any large undertaken relies heavily upon good communications. In the hospital this method of communications is still used i.e. patient to ward station. This flag system link a patient's room to the controlling nursing station. Identification of the patient needing help is crucial for swift action from the available medical staff. Similarly in large construction sites such as the Kiewa Hydro Scheme, successful instant communications was also essential. This switchboard required a 50 volt supply to successfully operate and was in use when both telecommunications and postal were under the one Federal Government carrier i.e. The Post Master General. A benefit with a line communication system (such as the one that fed this console was that interference from atmospheric conditions did not impede the connection. This console telephone switchboard (manual) unit has a shutter operation (precursor to the light indicator) to identify the caller to the telephone switchboard operator. This switchboard has a ten point indication shutter system allowing the operator to clearly identify where the caller is located. The console has a 44 connection point holes with their configurations in a triangular shape. The shutters are held closed by a small lever at the top which is opened by a small electrical charge from the incoming call. The operator uses a wind up handle to power a magneto connector(handle on the console's right side). The telephone hand set is located on the left side of the console. sec vic kiewa hydro scheme, alternate energy supplies, alpine population growth and communications -

slates
The board was made from a piece of quarry slate set in a wooden frame. In early times a slate pencil (not chalk) was used to form the letters. This slate pencil was often sharpened on the school wall. The advantage of slates over paper was that they could be wiped clean and used again and again. Children had to bring a dampened cloth or sponge to school so that they could clean the slate and start again but often they would use their own spit and the cuff of their sleeve! Tool - Guy's tongue forceps used by Dr Mitchell Henry O'Sullivan, 1930 (approximate)
During surgery under general anaesthetic, these forceps were used to pull the tongue forward to keep the patient's airways clear from obstruction. This tool was in general use from the 1930s onwards in teaching hospitals, and became a standard piece of equipment on all anaesthetic trolleys. In the majority of teaching hospitals, the blades of these forceps were smooth and wide to cause less trauma to the tongue. This particular style of tongue forceps is known as Guy's tongue forceps.Dr Mitchell Henry O'Sullivan worked in the Victorian country town of Casterton as a general practitioner from 1919 until his death in 1977. He also practiced obstetrics. His son, Dr David More O'Sullivan donated his obstetric bag and its contents to the College in 1999. The bag and contents are a unique time capsule of the type of instruments and pharmaceuticals used in the inter-war period.Pair of metal forceps. Similar in appearance to a pair of scissors, and other surgical forceps, but with rounded teardrop shaped tips. There is also a notch clip for the handle to keep the forceps open. Upton has used the traditional technique of Indonesian batik to create 'Gumnuts Galore'. Batik has a long history in the world and is believed to have originated on the island of Java in Indonesia. Document, Blotter Calendar 1924, 1924
As this blotter came with a collection of dockets etc from the Warrnambool Club it is assumed that it was a blotter used at the Club. It comes from the firm of B.H.Altson, a tobacconist, probably a supplier of goods to the Warrnambool Club. Henry Altson, a tobacconist, built an eight-storeyed building in 1903 at the corner of Elizabeth and Collins Streets in Melbourne (on the site of the first brick building in Melbourne). Altson’s tobacconist shop occupied the prime corner position for many years. The Warrnambool Club was a gentlemen’s club established in Warrnambool in 1873 and the Warrnambool Club building in Kepler Street erected in 1877 and the Club still exist. This blotter is of some interest as an example of the Melbourne firms patronized by the Warrnambool Club in 1924This is a piece of blotting paper advertising on one side the firm of B.H. Altson, Tobacconists, in Melbourne. It has a calendar for 1924. The printed material is black on a creamy-coloured surface. Ribbon, Edward VII coronation1902, 1902
This souvenir of the Coronation of Edward V11 in 1902 was produced by William Ferguson when he was the Mayor of Warrnambool (1901-2). Ferguson was a jeweller, optician and watchmaker in Timor Street in the early 1900s. This is an interesting item as an example of the fervor with which the coronation of a King of England was celebrated in Warrnambool in 1902. It was appropriate at the time that the Mayor of Warrnambool should issue a commemorative ribbon as a loyal gesture from the civic authorities. This is a fragment of red silk ribbon which was a souvenir piece produced by William Ferguson in 1902 to celebrate the Coronation of King Edward V11 of England. The ribbon is braided at the sides and frayed at the edges and has a split in the middle and tears across the top section. The ribbon has an imprint of the Royal Crest, the side profiles of Edward and Alexandra and the Town of Warrnambool crest. ‘Born 1841, Crowned 1902, Edwardvs V11 Rex et Imp et Alexandra, Reg. 1902, Presented by W. Bottle, R F Kennedy & Son, c. 1900
This bottle was made by Whitall Tatum and Co. of U.S.A. It was used in the pharmacy business of R. F. Kennedy and Co. of Warrnambool and it has the well-known Kennedy symbol of a lighthouse on a rocky face on a coastline with ships in the distance. In 1891 he built new premises with the shop described as one of the most elegant and best-stocked chemist’s shops in Victoria. He was a retail, wholesale and manufacturing chemist. Kennedy was active in community affairs in Warrnambool and was a foundation member of the Warrnambool Bowls Club, being the first Vice-President and an early President. The pharmacy business continued after Kennedy’s death, trading as ‘R.F. Kennedy and Co’. Richard Frank Kennedy was one of the most significant businessmen in Warrnambool in the late 19th century. Clothing - Woman's kilt, Fletcher Jones and Staff, Warrnambool, 1980s
This is a woman's kilt (skirt, shawl and pin). Two of the objects were made by the Fletcher Jones clothing company. The Tartan is the Australian tartan which was designed by John Reid, a Melbourne architect, when he entered a competition run by the Scottish Australian Heritage Council. He chose the colours of the Outback as the basis of his tartan. The tartan is design registered in Australia (No. 97439). (Source: District Tartans, P. Smith and G Teall, 1992). This outfit was possibly made around 1990. David Fletcher Jones who served in World War One had a itinerant drapery business in the Western District before opening a tailoring business in Warrnambool in 1924.He began to specialise in men's clothing and in 1946 opened a shop in Melbourne. In 1948 he opened a clothing factory in Warrnambool and formed a new company Fletcher Jones and Staff. The company expanded to all states of Australia and included the manufacture of both men's and women's clothing making it one of the best known clothing companies in Australia. Hook Button, late 1800's to mid 1900's
This item and its use and design spans the 1800's to early 1900's both in its fashion and application requirements. The genteel factor must be made when applying it to the Kiewa Valley. The evolution of general clothing and apparel has moved from solid(long lasting) and sometimes expensive material and fasteners to a cheaper and more "throw away" fashion of sometimes monthly change in the later 1900's to 2000's.The significance of this item to a rural setting such as the Kiewa Valley not only points to an integration of "modern" fashion in semi remote rural Australian environments but also the limited connections to "high" fashion through magazines and audible (radio) and visual (cinema) advertising. It also "spotlights" the differences between the European and British social networking and lack of interaction between towns and counties to the "Australian" levels of interactions between rural and city environments. Although physical distances in Australia, during this period (1800's to early 1900's) was a retarding factor in the diffusion of the latest fashion apparel it was not as noticeable as when the global communication and the physical travel abilities were "exploded" in the latter 1900's. This shift towards "the smaller" globe scenario has overcome the physical distances that were so apparent in the previous century. This silver button/glove hook was based on late 1800's designs when buttons became more integrated and fashionable than "tie up" laces. This was more so in genteel fashion. The main hook extension from the "pronged" hand piece has been constructed in a way that allows for easy replacement by either longer or shorter hooks.costume accessories, footwear, shoes and boots with buttons, gloves, costume -
