Wining piece of the Best Local Artist - any medium of the Rotary Club of Portland Inc 35th Portland Art Show 2017. Judged by Barbara McManus. Judges Comments: There is an interesting contrast in the boldness and simplicity of the subject. Worthy of close inspection as there is more to this than at first appearance.Mixed media on heavy card, from top to bottom thick streaks of blue, green and yellow, with a thicker glossier deep cream paint layered over the meeting point of the yellow and green. Centred very detailed in metallic flecked black and charcoal images of a bank of tree's, shrubbery and grasses with a mirrored water reflection. Framed in a honey toned timber frame, bordered with a bevel cut white matt board. Hand painted signature bottom right quadrant: Roger Hoe

This work is a large structure of stones, a cairn. It is constructed using volcanic rock from the area and has a number of metal plaques set into the sides of the rock structure. On one plaque the wording reads “Remnant Bush”, another says “Urban Push” and the third plaque reads “Machine Axe & Fire”.

At the 1978 Festival of Kew, a number of organisations, including the City of Kew, the Kew Historical Society, Trinity Boys Grammar School and local Girl Guides participated in a re-enactment of the expedition of the party of Charles Grimes in surveying the Yarra River as far as Kew in February 1803. The location for the event was Yarra Bend Park near the Studley Park Boat House. The event was organised by the Kew Historical Society. The re-enactment was captured by a number of amateur photographers as well as by a photographer from the local Progress Press.Local communities select events to commemorate according to their shared history and values. Commemorations of colonial exploration were popular with local historical groups such as the Kew Historical Society in the twentieth century. In re-enacting events such as the Grimes survey of the Yarra, students from a local school were encouraged to take on specific roles, including play-acting individuals involved in the survey party as well as members of the local Wurundjeri People. The photographs, taken by amateur and professional photographers, represent a period in time when the dominant values were those shared by the descendants of European settlers in Victoria. The Merle Bush Trefoil Guild was registered in Bendigo on 18/06/1981.The decision to disband the Merle Bush Trefoil Guild was made at a General Meeting on 17/02/2016. The group agreed to continue as the Merle Bush Friendship Group. The Australian Trefoil Guilds connect women who are either actively involved in Girl Guiding or have a history with Girl Guiding. The photograph is from the album of Ivy Child and shows a scene from Lyrebird gully that runs alongside the Olinda Falls. This has been a popular tourist area from the 1900s onwards. Ivy May Child (1910 – 1989) was the daughter of Arthur Edward (Ted) Child (1878 – 1964) and Ethel May Madden (1888 – 1970). Ted Child was the son of Matthew Francis Child (1839 – 1933) and Martha Jeeves (1857 – 1926). He was the grandson of one of the early pioneers Francis Child. Ivy grew up on the family property on Childs Road and took many photographs. Most of these are glued into her photo album. The album covered the years from c1927 – 1932. Ivy married Henry William Burgess (1906 – 1968) in 1944. The photographs remain in their original state in the album with individual copies made.
