A meeting was called Sept.1882, the first outcome of this meeting, was to advertised for, Friday 12th October 1882 from 7.30 pm to 9.30 pm in the Mechanic's Institute. The School of Mines was opened in the old market building. Gasometers resulted from complex engineering design evolving from primitive gasholders first used in 1824 in England to power street lights. The 20th century gasometer, (as used at the Highett Gasworks), was comprised of a series of large interconnected, telescopic, cylindrical vessels or lifts, which rose and fell depending on the volume of gas stored. The gasholder operated on a basic principle of a gas-filled floating vessel, rising and falling in a seal of water. The Highett Gasworks had its beginning in 1939 but its beginnings commenced sixty-two years earlier when the privately owned Brighton Gas Company was floated in 1877. By 1880 the company was performing well and making excellent profits. The company was welcomed by residents wanting to replace the shadowy light of a kerosene lamp with the bright luminescence of "modern" gas lamps. The land developers of the day were also keen supporters. But by 1884 people became disgrunted because either the gas had not reached them yet or because the quality of the supply had diminished due to the increasing use. In 1885 a second private gas company, the Central Brighton and Moorabbin Gas Co, Chaired by "Tommy" Bent was floated and for many years the two gas companies enjoyed a shared monopoly in supplying gas from their New Street Works. In the 1930s the company expanded its gas production facilities to Highett where it had purchased 45 acres of land adjacent to the Melbourne-Frankston railway line. A gasholder with a capacity of 750,000 cubic feet was erected on the Highett land in 1927 and connected with high pressure mains to the Brighton works. Three years later the company directors decided to proceed with the construction of a vertical retort house and coal store. Following a "lull" during the Great Depression work recommenced in 1936 and by 1939 the first complete gas-making plant was completed, and gas making commenced. Over the next twenty one years other significant extensions occurred, including an amenities block to accomodate 100 workers. In 1969 Esso commenced the introduction of natural gas to residents homes and the gradual decommissioning of the Highett Gasworks commenced. This coathanger came from the Warrnambool business of Cramond & Dickson. John Cramond and James Dickson established a drapery business in Warrnambool early in the 1850s in Timor Street. They moved to Liebig Street in the 1860s, with new premises in that street erected in 1878. The store had its own tailors and milliners and a large wine cellar. A branch store was opened in London in Poultry Lane and James Dickson managed that store for some years. The business of Cramond and Dickson closed in 1973. This item, although not rare, is of some interest as a memento of the Warrnambool store of Cramond and Dickson, a dominant business in Warrnambool for over 100 years. This is a wooden coathanger with a metal hook for hanging. The hook is rusted. The coathanger has black printing on one side. A Mechanics Institute in Bacchus Marsh dates from sometime in the 1850s. The first Mechanics Institute Hall was erected in 1858 in Young Street.(Victorian Collections no.659.) In 1883 a new and larger Mechanics Institute Hall was built in Main Street. The new hall cost 2,000 pounds to construct. It was opened by Sir William Clarke on 21 November 1883. The Mechanics Institute Library and rooms at the front of the hall were removed when the building was renovated in 1971. The building still stands and is used as a public hall.Small black and white 'carte de viste' style unframed photograph on card with gold border framing photograph. Housed in the Jeremeas Family Album which contains photographs of Bacchus Marsh and District in 1883 by the photographers Stevenson and McNicoll. The photo is of a substantial brick building under construction. Scaffolding support poles line the front and also can be seen on the top and back of the building. On the rooftop stand three workmen, with a further seven men standing at the front. Three men lean or stand casually at the front in casual poses. Four men stand in a line in another group on the roadway, perhaps indicating that they are master craftsmen. One of these men holds a tool of his trade, resembling a bricklayer’s mortar board. Six boys can be seen, four in a rather jaunty pose. In an indication of its public significance, the four front windows and door are arched and have decorative stone work in the side panels. Milk Fever In the treatment of milk fever in cows, 21/2 oz. to 31/2 oz. of the granules should be injected subcutaneously at two or three points in the neck, with the usual aseptic precautions. The granules should be dissolved in 10 fl. oz. of boiling water, the solution allowed to boil for five minutes, then cooled to body temperature before administration. Repetition of the dose is very rarely necessary. Should a more rapid response be desired, the whole of the solution hay be given by slow intravenous injection; alternatively , the greater part of the solution may be injected by this route and the remainder given subcutaneously in the manner described above. A convenient apparatus for the controlled administration of large volumes of fluid (leaflet side two) is the 'Wellcome' Flutter Valve Injection Apparatus. Prophylaxis Recurrent attacks at successive parturitions may be prevented by giving calcium borogluconate immediately after calving and again about 20 hours later. Each dose should be from one or two ounces of 'Wellcome' Calcium Borogluconate, dissolved as directed above. Other Indications Certain other conditions have been found to respond readily to calcium borogluconate therapy. These include parturient hypocalcaemia or milk fever in ewes, parturient eclampsia in sows and bitches, so-called "staggers" in lactating dairy cattle suspected to be due to hypocalcaemia, and transit tetany in horses. The dosage for various species is generally within the ranges indicated below : horses and cattle 11/2 to 31/2 oz. Sheep, goats and pigs 1/2 oz. to 1 oz. Dogs 11/2 dr. to 3 dr. Since 1895, Hobbies Ltd have been supplying model makers and enthusiasts throughout the world with a wide range of quality model kits, accessories, tools, components and handbooks. The Hobbies Company began life in Dereham, Norfolk in 1881 with a London Office opened later (1922) at 65 New Oxford Street, WC1. In 1895 Hobbies began supplying model makers with their products and in 1897 were incorporated into a Public company. In 1922 at a British Industries Fair the company had a stand advertising their products as "The All-British Firm with a World reputation". Fretwork Outfits. Fretwork Machines. Carpentry Outfits. Strip work Outfits. Also manufactures of Fretwork Tools and Benches, Wood, Circular Saws, Lathes, Picture Framing Outfits, Tools, etc. In 1947 the company had expanded and was still making tools and materials for the amateur craftsman in wood. They had acquired a reputation as manufacturers of quality Fretwork Outfits, Tools, Treadle Machines, Model Maker's Tool Kits. The company also publishers of ‘Hobbies Weekly magazine’ and also sold plans for fretwork, model making and wooden toys. In 1961 they were still manufacturers and retailers of craft tools and materials, timber merchants, light engineers and Government contractors with around 500 employees. A vintage tool made for hobbyists and distributed throughout the world by a British company that is still in existence today.
