From the Argus Newspaper of 10 May 1888: "OLD COLONISTS' ASSOCIATION OF BALLARAT. (FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT.) BALLARAT, WEDNESDAY. This association, which was founded in August, 1883, and at first known as the Old Identities' Association, now has a roll of 450 members. The objects of the association are "to aid and assist indigent or suffering old colonists; to raise a fund, by the voluntary subscriptions of the members and the aid of outside donations, for the purpose of relieving members in sickness and old age ; for assisting those in extreme distress, to provide the shelter o a home for old and indigent pioneers of the gold fields, their widows, or anyone connected with the association, and in the event of the death of any member to have his remains decently buried, the association defraying the expenses of the funeral (providing that no funds or property are left by the deceased), and to attend the funeral if so desired by the relatives " The qualifications for member- ship are good character and repute, and residence in the colonies for a quarter of a century. For some time the association had no property except the regular subscriptions, but about a year ago they obtained from the Minister of Lands the grant of a very valuable block of land in Lydiard-street, the Crown grant of which they received last week. This block has a frontage of 66ft to Lydiard street, worth at least £100 a foot. The ground was given to the association as a site for them to build a hall upon, and with so valuable an asset they had no difficulty in borrowing at 7 per cent, enough money to construct a hall. For revenue purposes the ground floor of the building has been made into four shops, and the rental from these, judging from the rentals of shops in the vicinity, will not only pay all the interest on the borrowed money, but over £200 a year towards clearing off the principal. The officers of the association are Messrs J P Murray, president; J W Graham and T. Stoddart, vice presidents; D Fern, treasurer , and J Fraser, secretary. The Old Colonists' Hall is an elegant looking building in Lydiard-street, lying between the newly-opened mining exchange and the Commercial Club house, and a few doors north of the Post office. The style of the facade is classic. The lower portion of the front is constructed of Waurn Ponds stone, forming piers, and the upper portion of brick and cement, the background being tuckpointed. The centre bay is carried by two three quarter columns with Ionic cups, which support a pediment on which is set a cast of the Ballarat coat of arms. The four other bays are supported by pilasters with Corinthian caps mid partly fluted. The entrance is through a spacious circular headed doorway, the keystone of the arch of which bears a sculptured head, in marble, representing that of the president of the Old Colonists' Association here, Mr. John P Murray. An ample vestibule leads to a wide stone staircase which ends at a spacious landing. The landing has a dome over the centre, with cornice and enrichments, and is lighted from above. The walls round the landing are panelled with marble slabs, which are to be appropriately inscribed in the future. On the first door are the rooms appropriated to the association. The principal of these is a hall 44ft x 33ft and 17ft high. This room is well ventilated and lighted from the back of the building with large windows, and the walls are finished with Keene's cement. The other rooms are committee room, 14ft x 16ft; scretary's, 14ft x 17ft 6in; kitchen, bedrooms, bathroom, &c. The front portion of the first floor is arranged so that it may be let for offices, or utilised for club purposes. Suitable provision has been made throughout tor lighting, ventilation, and means of egress. The architect for the edifice is Mr A. G Legge, of this city, and the contractors are Messrs. Whitelaw and Atkinson, Irving and Glover, Reynolds, and J Donaldson. The Old Colonists' Association Ballarat Inc. is a not for profit charitable organisation providing accommodation for elderly people. It manages a 27 Home retirement village at Charles Anderson Grove Ballarat. Accommodation is offered at significantly below market rates. It has been providing low cost accommodation to the elderly since the 1920s. The Association Council overseas the running of this facility on a voluntary basis. The older tree was planted 1880. Mrs Hands shop can be clearly seen, which was the Mount Dandenong North Post Office. The old Main Road runs up the centre of the picture and turns to the right and disappears behind “Mountjoy” the big guest house built by Paynters in 1905 and sold to Ellis Jeeves 1908, whose family ran it till 1943. At the bend of the road behind the big pine tree and the dark blackwood can be seen faintly the gable of Price’s house that contained the first shop on the mount. Above it is H Walker’s cottage on Ridge Road that still exists, his homestead is on the left of the picture on the same level. Below this house and to the left can be seen Ted Prices hay and corn store. The present estate agency lies between these two buildings, on the road which had recently been built. This can be seen winding from the lower left corner of picture to the left of the elms. The CRB had recently fenced the road and this is clearly seen as it circles behind trees in the left centre. Barber’s Road crosses CRB Road to the left of the dray under the leafless elm and the Coach Road dives down to the right just behind the pair of blackwoods to right of the elms. The picture was taken from just above the boundary of Isaac Jeeves’s selection Crown Allotment “C” (Jeeves Saddle) which stretched across the Gap to the other side of Mrs Hand’s shop, monopolising the gap from 1871 to 1879. One of these is really two as two suckers of the further tree were twisted together by Fred Jeeves in 1898 and grew as one tree. The other was planted in 1880. The shop is the shop of Mrs Eliza Hand and daughter Florence. The closed in far end of the verandah was the Mount Dandenong North Post Office. The large house is “Mountjoy” owned and run by the Jeeves Family from 1908 till 1943. It was built in 1905 by the Paynters who sold to Ellis Jeeves in 1908.He moved his line of coaches from “Kalorama” his old homestead and housed the horses in a line of stables behind “Mountjoy”. Price’s house, which contained their shop, the first one on the mountain, opened 1906, can be seen faintly behind the pine tree opposite the bend in the road, which was the main road then and now is Ridge Road. The Price’s house just shows in two tiny pieces, one on each side of the pine tree half way up. The house to the right of and high up the pine tree is Walker’s cottage which exists today opposite Jack Kidd’s home at the far edge of Lt 2 Village Settlement and was between Main Road and Barbers Road which runs down the left behind the elms. Walker’s homestead can be seen near left edge of picture 2/3 way up. The roof of the Methodist Church shows among trees left of picture. The Town Hall has architectural significance as a notable and largely intact example of a late nineteenth century provincial town hall, and as a major public building designed by the prominent Melbourne architect George Johnson. In 1887 the decision was made to build a new Town Hall on vacant land in the Civic Square near the Post Office. The architect was George Johnson, possibly the most prolific designer of municipal buildings in late nineteenth century Victoria. Tenders were called in March 1887, the successful quote being for ₤6454.5.0 by George Clayfield Senior. The foundation stone was laid in June 1887 and the new town hall opened with a grand ball in July 1888. In 1903 a memorial drinking fountain was erected in front of the building. Designed and made by George Daws, a Melbourne monumental mason, it commemorates Gerald Wilkinson, Maryborough's first war casualty, who was killed in action in 1901 during the Boer War. Films were screened at the Town Hall between 1908 and 1967. In 1939 a new entrance foyer for the hall and a Lower Town Hall were constructed, providing much needed public work during the depression. They were built by Steve Hunn for ₤5000, to plans by the Melbourne architect Harry J. Little. Funds were made available by the sale of the Borough electrical supply to the SEC. In 1971 the administrative offices at the front of the building were vacated when new administrative offices were built opposite. One of the oldest associations in Castlemaine is looking for new members. The Old Castlemaine Schoolboys Association was formed in the year 1912, making it 84 years in operation. Anyone over 30 years old and who is an Old Boy who attended a school within 15 kilometre radius of the Castlemaine Post office - St Mary's, the High School, Technical College, (now known as Castlemaine Secondary Colleges) is eligible for membership. The Association is planning a dinner and "get together" to talk about old times and rekindle friendships which existed all those years ago. This reunion is always held on the second Saturday in October, at the Castlemaine Town Hall Starting at 6:30pm. Another Project of the Castlemaine old Boys' Association undertakes is the supply of books to local school Libraries.

The settlement is Bulla township, which attracted Europeans in the 1840s. The bluestone building on the RHS was one of the early hotels in the town but was the Post Office and store until it was destroyed by fire in the 1980s. The school is visible behind a clump of trees in the valley. The road in the foreground is the former Bulla Road, which in the 1850s carried traffic to the Bendigo goldfields. The creek is the Deep Creek which flows into the Maribyrnong River further downstream. In the early days of European settlement, minerals were obtained in the valley at Bulla. This work forms part of the collection assembled by the historian Dorothy Rogers, that was donated to the Kew Historical Society by her son John Rogers in 2015. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand.The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian in the 1960s and 1970s. Previously I was under the impression, it was a bit of a general store, but perhaps that was not the case. Jack and Marion Newman ran the store from the mid sixties till around 1970 as I remember, but Robert (Rob) their son lives in Coldstream and he may recall the exact time his parents operated the store. The photos taken appear to be about "1970" vintage and were taken perhaps when they left. In regard to the other photo that I was trying to locate and find out about the function. The photo itself is entitled "Farewell to Mr and Mrs Bridger" and as you can see there were many people in attendance. In regard to the date of the photo I suspected it was taken circa 1916-1918 as my great great grandfather John Thomas Allen Snr (1841-1918) is in the photo and my paternal grandmother Rose Allen (1906-1989) is also in the photo and appears to be about 8-10 years old. In addition Rose's older sisters Ruby V.E. Allen (1904-1987) and Pearl C. Allen (1900-1990) and they appear to be in mid to late teens. So this makes me reasonable confident about the timing of the photograph. The photograph also includes Mars Buckley (Buckley and Nunn) and ?Marie Pinkerton (Haberdashery store in Croydon) who were friends of the Allen Family.
