1956 Season depicted by a collection of newspaper articles and personal entriesA collection of newspaper articles depicting Carlton's 1956 season in an Olympic Year for Melbourne. 1956 Summary After losses in the first two rounds to Essendon and Melbourne (two of the 1955 finalists), Carlton managed to win 6 games in a row between rounds 3 and 8. The Blues would have won 8 in a row if not for a 1 point loss to Geelong in round 9. After round 10, the Blues sat fourth on the ladder, with a game in hand over fifth place. Our strong mid-season form deserted us, and the club could only manage a 3 win, 1 draw and 4 loss record in its last 8 games. Going into the last game of the season, the Blues still clung onto 4th place on the ladder, half a game in front of Footscray. With the last game of the season being the Dogs at Princes Park, the Blues had a strong chance of playing finals football. Unfortunately, Footscray narrowly outscored Carlton in every quarter, resulting in a 17 point win and leapfrogging the Blues for 4th spot. The season did point to the continued improvement in the club's playing fortunes, showing year-on-year improvement for the club since the low point of 1954. Ross Milne grew up on his family's tobacco property in Myrtleford, Victoria and started skiing at Falls Creek when he was 13. He went on to win the North-Eastern District Ski Association (NEDSA) Junior Championships for three years in a row. In 1961 Ross was a member of the Australian team which competed against New Zealand in the Inter-Dominion Championships. In 1963, he won the Downhill and Alpine Combined title at the Australian Championships, while placing second in the Grand Slalom event. Ross Milne was selected in the Australian team that participated in the 1964 Olympic Winter Games at Innsbruck, Austria. A few days before the opening of the Games, on 25 January 1964, he tragically lost his life when he crashed into a tree during a training run for the Men's Downhill. He was only 19 years of age. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and eurythmics, the Demonstration was an annual event to showcase their skills. Melbourne Legacy conducted Annual Demonstrations / Parades from 1928 through to 1980s, usually held at Melbourne Town Hall or Olympic Pool Stadium. On the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games donor Doug Pleasance wrote- The 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games saw an evolutionary change in designer selection. A Declaration of Interest Form was communicated to over forty potential designers. The task and especially tight timelines that were involved deterred many aspirants, however, there remained eight designers with the potential we were seeking. These eight designers were paid $3,000 per submission and the winning designer, Wendy Powitt, was paid $15,000. For the first time the judging panel included two athletes, one male swimmer and one female basketballer, their influence was pivotal. The village clothing was designed to be a highly visible garment meaning that it was easy to "Spot the Aussies" and helped to contribute to a good team spirit. Blocks of contrasting colours were a feature of the pure wool shirts. Entry ticket to the Olympic Games in Melbourne in 1956. Row B, seat 27 for the 4th of December 1956. Tickets were printed in 15 - two colour combinations based on 4 basic colour backgrounds and seven overprints. Thus there was a colour for each day of the Games. The Melbourne Olympic games were mainly conducted at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and were one of the most successful in terms of medals for Australia. Among the medal winners were Shirley Strickland, Betty Cuthbert in Athletics and Dawn Fraser and Murray rose in swimming. The games commenced in November 1956. The games were noted for the 19 Hungarian athletes who applied for asylum with their home country undergoing upheaval at the time. The Melbourne games also enjoyed the advent of television with the technology having recently been introduced to the country. These badges note ten of the many athletes who competed for Australia in 1956. These items are of social significance and interest.
