Outer circle railway East Kew railway station ...William John Lamb (1878-1958) was born in Ballarat, the second oldest of eight children. His father was born in Scotland and had later migrated to Australia. William Lamb lived in Bright Street, Kew, with his daughter. This was possibly his family home. He died in 1958 aged 80. The Outer Circle Railway on which he worked as station master at East Kew connected the Oakleigh and Fairfield Park Stations. Photograph - Kew Railway Station: Denmark Street entrance, 1952, 1952
... Kew Railway Station: Denmark Street entrance, 1952...Kew Railway Station... Branch LIne Kew Railway Station Small black and white snapshot ...The Kew railway was opened in 1887, and diverged from the main (Box Hill–Lilydale) line about half-way between Hawthorn and Glenferrie. From the point of divergence the line was slightly less than one mile long, and it had only one intermediate station — Barker. There were four road over-bridges and two level crossings, including one over the busy Barkers Road. The line supported a passenger and goods service, and was electrified in December 1922, at the same time as the main line to Box Hill. There were a number of peak hour services which ran from Flinders Street station (Melbourne) to Kew, but in 1938 all but one of these were diverted to the Ashburton line, where traffic was growing. This had an adverse effect on Kew traffic, as passengers from Kew needed to cross over a footbridge at Hawthorn to change trains, and the main line trains were usually already crowded by the time they reached Hawthorn. At about the same time the off-peak trains were replaced by road buses. In 1952 all passenger trains were withdrawn, but the road bus service continued for many years. Goods trains were finally withdrawn in 1957, and the railway was dismantled in 1958-59. (Source: Frank Stamford, 'The Hawthorn - Kew Railway')Small black and white snapshot of the entrance to Kew Station from Denmark Street in 1952. The photograph, one of 12, is part of a larger album of newspaper clippings, timetables, tickets and photos relating to the Kew Railway Line, taken and compiled by Lachlan Richardson, while a resident of Kew. The album dates from the 1950s. Sign - Wodonga Railway Station Sign, c. 1880s to 1920s
... Wodonga Railway Station Sign. ...wodonga railway station... station was completed in 1874. The expansion of the railways ...The Wodonga train line opened in November 1873 when the section of the train line from Wangaratta to Wodonga was completed. A goods shed was built at this time in 1873 and a permanent train station was completed in 1874. The expansion of the railways to the northeast of Victoria occurred after the Victorian Government took over the railways in 1867 and the trains serviced large towns such as Seymour, Wangaratta and Wodonga, as well as smaller towns along the way. The Tallangatta and Cudgewa train lines from Wodonga were built in stages from the 1880s to the 1920s in what is considered to be some of the most challenging landscape for railways. The Cudgewa line was opened in 1921, so the Wodonga train station sign dates from this period. The Wodonga train station sign has local and state significance due to its use in Wodonga in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, as part of the expansion of the Victorian Railways in the northeast of the state.Old painted wooden sign from the Wodonga train station with the directions for changing to the Tallangatta and Cudgewa train line in light coloured paint on a black painted background."WODONGA / CHANGE FOR / TALLANGATTA & CUDGEWA / LINE" wodonga railway station, wodonga train station, tallangatta train line, cudgewa train line, railway signs, victorian railways signs -

... Main Road near Eltham Railway Station....eltham railway station... with the entrance access to the railway station. Contained within... with the entrance access to the railway station. Contained within ...View looking south along Main Road, Eltham from near present day Luck Street. On the immediate right is a fence with the words “Hot Water” painted on it followed by William J Capewell’s butcher shop, then the slaughter yard and saleyards with the entrance access to the railway station. Contained within the saleyards facing the street, a small shelter with the name H.H. Clark upon it. Horace Harold Clark was the son of Eltham State School’s first Head Teacher, David George Clark. As well as being a farmer, he was an Estate Agent and conducted auction sales, presumably from this shelter. The large weatherboard building on the corner (opposite present-day Arthur Street) with signs for Summer Drinks and Hot Water painted on the side is Luther and Ada Haley’s General Store and Bakery, built 1902. This was the first building in what is now Eltham’s present shopping town centre. Haley previously ran the General Store and Bakery on the corner of Main Road and York Street until his lease expired and the premises were bought by Mrs Sarah Burgoyne in 1902. The store later was known as Staff's Store. In the distance approximately mid-way between the Butcher shop and the Bakery are the tops of what appears to be two cypress trees, which could well be the trees in front of the Shillinglaw Cottage facing Main Road. On the eastern (left) side of Main Street is Haley’s Paddock, which was used on occasions for community picnics. Capable of holding 10,000 people, with ample shade and hilly surroundings it was an ideal place for any community gathering such as the State Schools’ Picnic in 1904. Picture dated as c.1910 based on similar picture published in the Weekly Times, Feb. 1912. Kerb and channelling added 1923. Cross Ref: 610 (looking north), 611 (later stage), 613. Same as 705 (though in better condition)This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book,"Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). The collection of over 500 images is held in partnership between Eltham District Historical Society and Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library) and is now formally known as the 'The Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection.' Water could be obtained from either the elevated tank at one end or the connected standpipe at the opposite end. Locomotive firebox contents could be dumped into pits between the rails from locomotives once they were carefully positioned above them. Such locomotives then could move onto the Engine Shed area for overnight parking. Firebox fires would be re-lit when the locomotive was next needed in a day or so.Digital TIFF file Scan of black and white print enlargement on textured paper (14.5 x 21 cm)coal hopper, d3-639, d3-class steam locomotive, echuca railway station, george coop collection, vr commissioner's special train -
