A photo of a large group of teenage boys and men from Big Camp, 11-18 January 1969, at Lord Somers Camps. Big camp was for older Junior Legatees. This photo shows 27 people who took part. Melbourne Legacy provides camps for junior legatees. The camps gave the children an opportunity of a summer beach holiday with other Legacy children. It started with outings to the property of Legacy founder, Legatee Stan Savige, who had a place in Balnarring near the beach. Permanent camp buildings were built in 1930. In 1930 Lord Somers (Governor of Victoria) also started a camp at a nearby property and the area was renamed Somers. Legacy Somers Camps continued intermittently at Stan's property until it was decided in 1951 to make other arrangements for holidays. Including using Lord Somers Camp in Somers for the camps.Melbourne Legacy provided the Somers Camp experience for different age groups.Black and white photo of Legatees and senior boys at Big Camp in 1969. This calendar was found in a shed and is interesting because of the phone number being Poowong 1, when the telephone exchange was at the local post office. the Butter factory is no longer operating nor is the Foodland grocery store that was part of the same business.Only known calendar in existence.grubby cardboard calendar 1961 front page hanging off. centre colour picture has a small hole in it. A colour slide of children on a motor boat for Operation Float. Operation Float was an event run by Melbourne Legacy to take Junior legatees on an outing. It could have been to naval boats such as HMAS Cerberus or to a Yacht club. It gave the junior legatees the opportunity to see a naval boat in action, spend time on the water or try sailing. Part of a set of slides that are printed on Ektachrome and discoloured to a pink tinge. The year is possibly 1961 as one slide has the date on it. Was with many other slides taken in the 1950s and 1960s. The slides have been photographed to make digital images and moved to archive quality sleeves. The tape has not been played but from the label it is a recording of 'Mission Matilda - a leap for Legacy'. Mission Matilda was when former Junior Legatee Brian Edwards set out in September 1993 to complete a flight around Australia in a tiger moth called 'Matilda' as a tribute to Legacy's 70th Anniversary. He was due to arrive at Essendon Airport on 4th October 1993 and a celebratory luncheon was held. The event was supported by Ansett Airlines and Optus Communications. It is possibly a promotional video. It is 11 minutes duration.
