The Sunbury News Office was established by the Boardman family initially in Brook Street closer to the station. In 1880 Arthur Boardman opened a bookshop and news agency and in 1882, he printed the first issue of the Sunbury News.The building was on the SW corner of Brook and O'Shanassy Streets. Members of the Boardman family also ran the adjacent business. The Sunbury News was the local paper for residents until the late 1960s A non-digital black and white photograph with a cream border of a weatherboard news office building with six men standing the front. The photo is of Donald Hartley Rowe who was a baker at 118 Union Road. The property's rear exited on to Stirling Crescent and this photo was probably taken from kerbside of it. He was born in 1876; married Mary Gibson in 1901 and died in Surrey Hills in 1958. In 1935 his daughter Winifred (1903-1985) married Phillip Sebastien Slavin (1907-1980), known as Paddy, who took over the business. Charles Grant opened a boot makers business on the northern corner of Grant Street and Waddell Street in 1907. The business was advertised as being in Maddingley Road. By early 1910 the business had moved to 'Ryan's Corner' on the corner of Main Street and Gell Street, Bacchus Marsh. The brick house behind the boot maker's shop was built for Alexander Murdoch in 1869. It was used as a residence, a boarding house and as part of a business by a number of different owners over many years. It was known as the Murdoch house and also as 'Links Cottage' when it was used as a boarding house. For most of the twentieth century it was used as a residence. It was demolished in 1997 to make way for new residences.Black and white photograph print. A reproduction of an original photograph which is mounted on board. Land, bordered by Brougham, Havlin and Mundy Street was purchased in 1911 and the distillery onsite was modified to suit the needs of the Rosella Company. Renovations and additions, including a 21 metre high steel chimney, were completed in time for the 1911/12 tomato season. First manager was Owen WIlliams (1883-1948), a Welshman.
